Tyrone Minors sledging - we'll never know the truth

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Both counties went public in their comments about the incident in the following days and weeks. It's difficult to understand why they now want it all hushed up. I feel that the young lad at the centre of the incident has now been 'hung out to dry' and the only only obvious inference to be drawn from the investigation is that sledging, even to the lowest possible degree, is acceptable in Ulster GAA. Deplorable.

Irishnews reporting today that they seen the documentation and it states both county boards agree nothing was said about the fellas father. although it does say that some inappropriate remarks were made during the match!

As stated above the main problem here was Bonner mouthing of in press and all the ex Donegal players jumping on top of it in twitter and the medias

Actually, the Irish News reports this morning that the investigation reports says ' it was likely that some Tyrone players made unwelcome verbal comments towards the Donegal player during the game'. It goes on to say that both counties accept that these comments were not in relation to the 'death' of the player's father. However, the question over whether the abusing comments related to the player's father is not mentioned in the report.
So it appears Tyrone accept their players did sledge the Donegal player. Both counties accept the player's father's death was not a topic - but Donegal's claims that the sledging involved the use of the player's father's name is not dealt with.

It seems that all concerned just want to move on from this and sweep it under the carpet. I suppose what were the Ulster Council to do, unless the player(s) involved admitted it, then how could they prove it? There was never going be a satisfactory outcome either way.

Roger - is your question not answered by virtue of the fact that the report says that both counties accept that the comments from Tyrone players were not in relation to the death of the players father?

Roger, I understand exactly what you mean and plenty of people in my area of Donegal know exactly what you mean. The morning after the game, I spoke to a young lad who socialised with the affected player in question that night, and the sledging was around the player's father, that's exactly what it was about. And while the 'death' itself of the father was not talked about, the father was talked about in such a manner which was disgusting and totally provocative. So the official end game of all of this might lessen the reality of it all, but what happened was in awful taste.

Unfortunately you can never prove/disprove it so there is no point in talking about it. Either way it is an impossible situation. Sportsmanship in the GAA is at a shameful low. I think that we have got to grow out of all of this.

I felt it should have been handled privately, put through the appropriate channels and allow things to take their course. Declan Bonner was a little bit quick to run to the media, and that was a mistake on his part, no matter how passionately he felt about the matter.

I have nothing to say about the actual Incident, I heard rumours like everybody else and I am sure the Ulster GAA CCC would have heard all that too and made an adequate descision based on that evidence. Both County boards seemed to agree, and all parties agreed the matter should be kept confidential. So the matter was done and dusted.

Tyrone have had their sporting reputations tarnished within the GAA in 2015, whether fully deserved or not, for Incidents at Minor ( v Donegal ), U21 ( v Tipperary in U21 AI Final ) and Senior level ( V Monaghan ). And it did bite them in the arse against Kerry, when I felt Tyrone weren't given many decisions they deserved.
