Never heard of Bluefield. Remarkable that a county known for football would have such a hurling-mad parish! Of course they love their hurling in Four Roads & Oran too :-)

"Civil parishes (Irish: paróistí sibhialta) are units of territory in the island of Ireland that have their origins in old Gaelic territorial divisions. They were adopted by the Anglo-Norman Lordship of Ireland and then by the Elizabethan Kingdom of Ireland, and were formalised as land divisions at the time of the Plantations of Ireland. They no longer correspond to the boundaries of Roman Catholic or Church of Ireland parishes, which are generally larger. Their use as administrative units was gradually replaced by Poor Law Divisions in the 19th century, although they were not formally abolished. Today they are still sometimes used for legal purposes."

Don't the GAA rules go by religious parishes and not civil parishes?
An extremely interesting thread.
I'd reckon that Cork or Dublin would have a lot of clubs in one parish.

Sometimes they cross county boundaries. Coa is a Fermanagh football club (capt Eoin Donnelly, Fermanagh capt) which is in the same parish as Trillick, the current Tyrone senior football champions (capt Mattie Donnelly).

In Leitrim we have Mohill(senior champions) and Eslin (intermediate club) from the same parish. Also Ballinamore and Aughnasheelin share the same parish as do Aughawillan and Drumreilly. These clubs would normally amalgamate at underage level.

On the Limerick Tipperary border you have the parish of Solohead & Oola. Solohead GAA club plays in Tipp, Oola in Limerick. A similar situation exists in Aherlow/Galbally: two different clubs, playing in different counties but the same parish.

Pre 1900 and up to approx. 1904 only one club from a parish was allowed to register as a club, so if there was more than one team in a parish then none were allowed to register for competing in the championship - can someone confirm the accuracy or otherwise of the aforementioned?

Arva, Cornafean & Killeshandra are in the one parish in Cavan, I believe. Amalgamate in senior to form St. Joseph's.
