Thanks for the feedback.
Some interesting names up and down the country. Some i hadnt heard before, thats for sure.

But I'm probably still not getting the answer i came looking for.
I suppose i may not have made it perfectly clear in my original post, but the main question i wanted answered from it was 'why the difference from county to county'?
Why do all Tyrone and Monaghan clubs have the name of a historical figure after their placename, yet (most) clubs in Offaly or Laois or Galway, etc. do not?
Why are clubs in Louth not named after their village or area?
Maybe its a question none of you can answer, i dont know. Hopefully someone there can.

One reason I can think of, apart from patriotism at the time for naming clubs Pearses, Sarsfields, Gaels etc, would be that a large number of clubs sprung up in the same areas, so they had to differentiate, they couldn't all be called after the town or village.

Some clubs folded and died, others amalgamated and you were left with one club, a town name with an 'Gaels' at the end(or not).

Maybe all these clubs in Offaly(and other places) with just town names are old amalgamtions, or were the dominant club and outlasted all the other rural clubs beside them. I'm sure most clubs have written history at this point.

Given it's proud Republican history and strong resistance to British invasion/misrule, Armagh has quite a number of clubs named after individuals and organisations who led the fight:

Annaghmore Pearse's
An Port Mór O'Neill's
Armagh Pearse Óg
Ballyhegan Davitt's
Camlough Shane O'Neill's
Clady Seán South
Clonmore Robert Emmet's
Collegeland O'Rahilly's
Derrymacash Wolfe Tone's
Dorsey Emmet's
Corringshego Thomas Davis
Highmoss Sarsfield's
Keady Michael Dwyer's
Lurgan Clan na Gael
Lurgan Seán Tracey's
Madden Rapparee's
Maghery Seán MacDiarmada
Middletown Eoghan Rua
Mullabrack O'Donovan Rossa
Poyntzpass Redmond O'Hanlon's
Tullysaran O'Connell's

Also a number of clubs named after saints, given our county city's status as ecclesiastical capital of Ireland this is no surprise, with St Patrick featuring prominently:
Carrickcruppen St Patrick's
Cullyhanna St Patrick's
Derrynoose St Mochua's
Dromintee St Patrick's
Granemore St Mary's
Grange St Colmcille's
Killean St Michael's
Killeavy St Moninne's
Lurgan St Paul's
Lurgan St Peter's
Newtownhamilton St Michael's
Portadown St Malachy's
Whitecross St Killian's

A few clubs are named commemorating Irish mythology and culture:
Armagh Cúchulainn's
Armagh Harps
Ballymacnab Round Towers
Camlough Craobh Rua
Craigavon Éire Óg
Darkley Phelim Brady's
Forkhill Peadar Ó'Doirnín
Keady Lámh Dhearg
Lurgan Clann Éireann
Mullaghbawn Cúchulainn's
Middletown Na Fianna
Portadown Tír na nÓg
Silverbridge Harps

The only exceptions I can find for the above three categories are Crossmaglen Rangers, Culloville Blues; and Lissummon, who are seemingly the only club in the county that is known by its place name and nothing else. It is interesting that there is no set protocol for referring to clubs - some are known exclusively by their placename, others are interchangeable while some are known strictly by their club name.

The clubs in Belfast and Antrim in general who would be named after significant people (varying levels of significance) in history are:

Belfast
Sarsfields - aka the Paddies
O'Donovan Rossa
John Mitchels
Michael Davitts
Patrick Pearses

Rest of Antrim
Shane Ui Neill (Glenarm)
Roger Casements (Portglenone)
Robert Emmets (Cushendun)

Also Sean MacDiarmada in Belfast steelfixer who recently became extinct

Is there not or was there not also an O'Donnells.

Offside rule - another one for your list would be Sean Stinsons

There was an o'connells many moons ago Geoff, O'Donnells are listed above by offside

Gael Uladh and Dwyers are 2 other Belfast clubs to have become extinct, though Dwyers have a social club still going on Grosvenor road beside the RVH, they tried to start the a team a few years ago but it disappeared again.

Sean Stinsons are an amalgamation between Portglenone and Ahoghill (offside can correct me) at underage level, they go their own way at adult level

Quite a few underage amalgamation teams have now cropped up in Antrim recently, particularly in Belfast

In Laois it's mostly just a simple placename. Portlaoise, Portarlington, Ballylinan etc.

The exceptions are O'Dempseys from Killenard called after a local ancient clan and St Josephs after the parish saint.

A few other clubs have saints names tacked on to their placename but they'd be known by their placename - Colt, Abbeyleix, Mountrath and Clonaslee are the ones I know.

Yes you are correct bumper - Sean Stinsons are a Casements Portglenone/St Mary's Ahoghill amalgamation up to Minor level. Other amalgamations at underage are:

Belfast Saffrons (Davitts and St Teresa's -play Minor)
Clan na Gael (St Patricks Lisburn/St Agnes/Éire Óg at minor -,minus Aggies at U21)
Setanta - not sure which Belfast clubs make up this one. Back to you bumper...
Naomh Pádraig - Carey Faughs/Glen Rovers/Emmets (Hurling)

Also forgot St Mary's Aghagallon in previous list of clubs.

Few other extinct clubs to add to the list:
James Stephens
Seagan An Diomais
Gaelhil Uladh
Otlamh Fodhla
O'Neill Crowleys

Very interesting thread.

An answer to this would be that counties where there is strong republican and independance opinions, the clubs have been named after republican figure heads. This is also the same with the reason for Saint names used. For example, a lot of ulster (and particularly the 6 counties) have this in the club names, as stated by previous contributors to thiis thread.

Rural counties have traditionally and predominately simply used the town land or village as there club names. Examples are Offaly, Galway, Mayo, Westmeath etc. Exceptions occur where amalagmations have occured.

Counties where there is large urban areas, as well as rural regions, such as Limerick and Waterford have a mixture of simply town lands names and saints/figure heads depending on their urban/rural divide. Rural as stated above, and saints/figure heads in more populated areas.

With this all said, the parish rule is a defining rule of thumb in the naming of the club. The counties of higher population generally have saints (after the local saint) or figure heads (after a local/republican figure head) in their title.

Offaly is mostly the name of the town or village or area.
Clodiagh Gaels is a new club, an amalgamation and called after a local river.
Shamrocks is outside Tullamore, Rahan and Mucklagh.
St Rynaghs is over Banagher/Cloghan direction.
Seir Kieran is Clareen and Erin Rovers is Pullough.
Brosna Gaels is a few football clubs coming together for hurling
There's probably a couple more but I'm not an Offaly man!
