Aidan O'Shea - POTY.

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Seems like on the hoganstand poll that AOS is the peoples choice for POTY , yet he doesn't even get nominated for the actual award? The GAA not surprisingly going with the Dublin players.

Honest to god the fact that he is even part of the poll is a joke, and wininng it??? Well, ill say no more!!!

Its honestly laughable that he can be considered for POTY when he went missing come business end of championship.

Player of the Connacht championship definitely.
But you can't get player of the year when you fail to show up in your county's 2 biggest games of the year.

With all due respect to Aidan O'Shea, he in no way deserves player of the year ahead of the likes of McMahon, McCaffrey or B. Brogan.

Why would he get it? I would have fancied my chances of baging a hatrick against that Sligo defence.

POTY is nearly always from the All Ireland winners.

Didn't see anyone treble marking any of the nominated players in any match this year.

McCaffrey - Any intercounty manager who had him man marked (never mind double marked) would be a laughing stock
McMahon - Ran his own media campaign to get nominated. He wasn't even marked by any team this year. PLayer of the year for being the free man, your having a laugh.
Brogan - top scorer from play this year - correctly nominated and should probably win it. If he had a decent pair of studs on in the final their wouldn't be a discussion on the topic

I am sure the reason for the voting in the Hogan Stand poll is that there are four players on that poll and three of those are Dublin players,so people are undecided as to which Dublin player merits the award, indeed Ciarán Kilkenny could also be added to the list. In my opinion Jack McCaffrey is player of the year, played brilliantly all year in both League and championship.

Gotmilk, I hear Pete McGrath is looking for another scorin forward. Maybe you should get in touch with him. A hat-trick man would be invaluable to Fermanagh's chances.

AoS Scored 1.1 in Croke Park this year. that is what he should be judged on, not playing a poor sligo team. The one Mayo that should be mentioned in CoC

We don't play sligo though Neverright. Mother is from Leitrim so I might yet get a game at intercounty level.

No he does not deserve it this year. Can anyone answer me this though, do you think he was as many Dubs have claimed "shown up" or that Dublin done an excellent marking job on him? You see you can't have it both ways. I think Aidan is a fantastic footballer and while he did not have a great day at the office in the Diblin games, he was well marked and had little support from his own team.

Diarmuid O Connor will win young player of the year. Awards are nice but there is only one thing that matters, winning the All Ireland.

He's a great talent

That's not his natural role and it was exposed

Not his fault.. you'd have to question some of the poor ball put into him too

Interestingly enough, mccaffrey wasn't really in either semi finals or the final either, yet he is the run-away favourite. I suppose when your team wins it doesn't matter as much.

Savage footballer
not even close to POTY year tho

Philly is the POTY but Jack will get it

Funnily, Jack wouldnt be in my top 3
I would have Philly, James Mc and Bernard ahead of him
popssibly even Fenton

Aidan O Shea contributed more to his team than Fenton did easily.

Fat griffin,
That's not the point , Mayo built their game around AOS and it worked till the semi final. I think he's a great player and if Mayo didn't play Dublin in the semifinal ,it's possible he could have got his team to a final . But the bottom line is he didn't and really shouldn't have to shoulder all that responsibility. If he played for Dublin he might have got Player of the year.
I think Philly McMahon was the most consistent in the semifinal and final and that really is what POTY is judged on.
So really it should be called the Player of August/September award.

AthCliath - Player of the year is not judged in August/September, naturally there is a greater weighting given to those months than other months but it is judged throughout the year. If it was judged in August/September Paddy Andrews would surely be in with a great chance, instead, he is not likely even to end with an All-Star. I think Jack McCaffrey is most likely and deservedly will get player of the year and it is not because of his brillance in August/September but because of his great performances throughout the year. Bernard Brogan got player of the year in 2010 and did not play in the month of September.

I agree that POTY is not just won in August and September but it's a big deal towards it. O Shea had two fantastic games but Sligo are a Division 3 team otherwise he had a very good game against Donegal who aren't the same team since Jimmy left. On your basis Connolly would deserve to be in the reckoning as he had a very good Leinster campaign but as he had a poor All Ireland series he doesn't even deserve an All Star as he didn't show in the big games. Conor McManus is a player who is double/treble marked in every game but no matter who he plays he contributes 6 scores or thereabouts a game. Does he deserve a nomination he was also fantastic against Donegal and exceptional against Tyrone.

Fainleog,
Bernard winning it in 2010 is the only player probably in the last 15 years or more not to come from the team that wins the AllIreland.
My point is The winning team will have player picked and no matter how good he was up to the quarter finals, if he didnt have a good semifinal and or final , he won't get it.
So for me the criteria to win is .
1 you have to be on the team that wins the AllIreland.
2 have a good semifinal or final . Preferably both.

And who did mccaffrey stand out against? Fermanagh? You are correct regarding o'shea, but the same applies to mccaffrey this year, who was under pressure in both semis and wasn't really in the final. So how can you dismiss o'shea, yet accept mccaffrey as the most probable winner?
