Comparing Rochford to the Gooch?

Bizarre comparison.

Some people have an obsession with Dublin finances. Or else have a really poor sense of humour. Not sure which.
This thread is about the MAYO back room team.
Looks a very accomplished line up on paper, I liked the way Corofin played football and beat my own club last year. They struggled this year against Castlebar on a cabbage patch so I wouldn't read too much into that. I can tell you first hand how difficult it is for lads to get 2 club all ireland in a row. Even harder than the intercounty IMO.

If they can unearth one more forward I feel they have a great chance.
Mayo are in the top 3 sides in the country and IMO will improve next year with Rochford in charge. The only criticism of the back room side is that I have not been overly impressed with Tony McEntee and as a manager and tactician @ Brigids but from what I have heard he is a good coach so this role could suit him perfectly.

How many players will be part of the selection and management process? They are now in the drivers seat and will demand change for any perceived wrongdoing or loss.

Surely a comparison with the finances of a rival county is completely relevant?
More people have a great sense of humour when they are dishing it out, but go very stoney faced when the favour is returned...

TheMaster - not everything has to compared to Dublin and their "advantages". Things can be taken on their own merits and discussed without involving Dublin.

Give them time. We thought Connelly and Holmes were saviours before last summer. Can't judge him and his backroom team until he's had a year in charge.

The reference was in your one trick pony statement. Give the man a chance, he has not even taken over as Mayo Manager officially and you are already writing the man off.

Very true. A point well made...

But it really shouldn't only be the management under the spot light

Millions have been spent, a number of tactics have been used, a number of managers, a number of back room team...

There's only been one constant - The players... and ultimately it's been their failure to date.

The Gooch isn't a one trick pony or anything like it.

Kick off both feet... can play just about any position in the Kerry forward line

He has to go to all clubs junior to senior seeing what potential county players there are. Might find a few playing colleges that played no under-age for Mayo. Might even get one or two that packed in football in their mid teens to concentrate on studies and now back playing ball after their hard work rewarded them with a good job. He should leave no stone un-turned. Not necessarily looking at senior clubs and former county minors and U21s but looking at as many players as he can within and outside Mayo.

Also needs to decide who's worth keeping and how to bring the optimum consistent performances from them. When he has a clearer idea of his squad he can tell some players the bad news. Could bring great things out of some players that many of us don't rate highly. Maybe a few positional changes.

Absolutely no way have we been watching the 15 best footballers in Mayo this past few years.

That line is trotted out a lot but every time I as someone to name me a player or 2 they are stumped. I don't think there is a gem down there that is being ignored. Would be nice to find a beast of a full back and another forward but don't see it happening. Evan Regan needs to step up again, Conor O Shea was touted but went off the boil. Anyway if you have the names of people I would be delighted to know!

Only one thing worse than being worked about and that's not being worried about.

Great to see lads happy to volunteer to help out with Mayo from all parts of the country! If only they had the same level of finances as Dublin so they could compete....

Indeed. A bit like Bernard Dunne, retiring from boxing to take up a role with the Dublin footballers!

Hilarious, Bernard Dunne has made his money in the ring, loves the Dubs and has always followed them , he wanted to be involved with the setup ,like the rest of Dubs helping out ,gets mileage allowance .
I think we shall start calling Mayo the wild Geese.

How can we know them if they have been ignored until now Flaker? You're right, there's feck all chance they'll find any gems. But it shouldn't stop them looking. After losing 7 finals in 26 years it's time to stop doing the same things over again expecting a different result.

McEntee won two All-Ireland titles in a row with Crossmaglen think he is tactically astute enough!

Of course you don't stop looking, I am simply saying that I used to play Senior Champ down there and still know the club scene fairly well and there is nobody telling me that some lad is shooting the lights out and not getting a look in. My point is i'm sure you know the club scene down there as well, and I doubt you know some lad who is being overlooked, maybe I am wrong.

Jimbodub quote: 'Didn't take much too much to tactically setup Cross in fairness'- Could you not say the same about Jim Gavin!! although the backroom squad would be considerable larger. I do not agree with your point and McEntee has been successful at all levels, club, county and as manager.
