Anthony Cunningham. - What is going on?

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

St Thomas players would back him.Horan has come out and backed the mayo players. Loughnane and Cyril Farrell have backed cunningham. Loughnanes piece was pretty much backing what most of the public have speculated. That it was a certain few older players and that the hurlers couldn't put club rivalry aside.

In the last 15 years, player unrest has been prominent. Many counties have tried it, but the only county to do it successfully have been Tipperary.

In 2007 Cummins & Kelly clearly had issues with Babs Keating. No major fuss in the press, no talk of strikes. The county put Liam Sheedy forward as Manager, he won the vote and the rest is history.

Clearly there are ways this can be handled better and Tipp's was better than Cork, Limerick, Mayo, Wexford, Galway, etc.

1796113 Damo, you're comparing apples with oranges. This particular Mayo side has been beaten narrowly by the All-Ireland champions four years running, and dethroned the previous year's All-Ireland champions in three of those years. All of which indicates that they haven't been a million miles away, even allowing for a shortage of quality in some areas of the field. An All-Ireland title is not unrealistic in that context. You could say similar about the Armagh side of the early 2000s, who lost to the All-Ireland winners 3 years running. Or the Dubs in the early 1990s. Cork in the late 1980s, etc.

Tyrone were a great side in the 2000s, but haven't been at that level for some years. Harte has rebuilt the side and they look to have promise. Different situation entirely.

Fair point but let me ask you this on the back of what you have said ,whoever comes in what are Mayos expectations ? If a semi final after a replay is not deemed success right from the start its Sam or failure ? and if Sam is not delivered well then how has progress been made by bringing in someone new ?

Not enough credit is given to managers for the work they do, the voluntary ones anyway. We're only too aware how much "rivalry" there is between clubs in Galway. Rivalry is healthy but when differences at club level are dragged into the county setup it can be almost impossible to manage. Throw into the mix, individual personalities and certain indiscipline attitudes on and off the field and you can appreciate what a manger has to deal with. Cunningham has lasted four years in such an environment and should be commended for it. Tipp had/have similar issues and have had their share of discontent in the recent past. A lot of issues never get into the media but we all know of incidents in various counties which the managers had to deal with.

Therefore, sometimes, a thankless job. All very fine if you're getting well paid for it but that's now the case in Galway, Tipp, Cork or Kilkenny as far as I know.

The NOW should have read NOT.

All,

Just my two cents..
I think its 100% that a player or even a group of players should be able to have such an influence in this situation .. If this was KK.. answer would be .. If you don't like it , step aside we have other players in the county that will fill your boots..

The vote of no confidence was unamimous amongst the Galway squad.

27-3 is not unanimous...

27-3 is a big margin by any standards. Some one must pay for the All Ireland defeat. It is unfortunately going to be the Manager. Still the future is bright for Galway there are plenty of good Bainisteoirs around- Eamon O Shea, Anthony Daly?, Jeff Lynskey, the Portumna lads. All will do a good job. Galway will win the All Ireland next year!

Where did 27-3 come from? The same place as the 4 or 5 players that weren't playing that led the revolt I assume. The vote was 100% no confidence in the current management team, and it had nothing to do with the All-Ireland final but was due to the poisonous atmosphere that got worse all year. And if Ger Loughnane thinks the players took a cowardly route he'd want to check a couple of very widely known episodes that happened this year

I suppose that our expectations will always be measured in terms of Sam; Connacht titles are great, but there's one trophy we really want and the Nestor Cup isn't it.

That's not to say that the new manager should be sacked if he doesn't deliver it next year. What we should want is for there to be a rigorous selection process which doesn't make us a national joke (though I may be giving the Mayo County Board too much credit in hoping for that). I would personally love to see us address our problems with coughing up soft goals at critical points of big matches; conceding few majors makes you much harder to beat. Losing a game honourably is fine; coughing up three goals in the last quarter from a winning position isn't.

Also, I think outsiders should understand that discontent has been brewing for a while concerning management issues, and it's not solely about results. Horan was meticulous in his preparation and I don't think that the Mayo players are unreasonable to expect a similar level of preparedness from the new manager.

Listened to Martin brehony on newstalk last night and the most interesting thing that came out is the players are not united in this. It seems to be led by the older players, with the younger ones happy for continuity. I think if Cunningham is to come back, he needs a clear out, probably of some of the elder statesman. he might even need to reinvent himself. One negative attitude in a squad can be Like a cancer. There's no point keeping players that are going to cause trouble. Brian Cody changed everything after the 2001 defeat to Galway. Look where kk are now. Players power might work short term, but I can't think of 1 example where it led to sustained success. People might say AC hasn't won an AI but before he came, Galway got past the quarter final once in 11 previous years. He's not prefect but is the best we've had since the turn of the century, probably because he was given time. The stats show change for change sake in Galway leads to more change for change sake, ultimately to nowhere. The reason why I'm against the players is they've provided no details, as to what the issues are, and what their solutions are, and how many of the players want him gone. It cloak and dagger. I still say that for the players to put the onus on the manager is giving away their own power. They have and will always have the power to affect results.

It wasn't, it was 27-3. Where did 100% no confidence come from?

Is there any truth in the rumours that someone got into the dressing room at half time? What did happen at half time?

AC has lost the players it seems to me.Anyone calling for a clear out of senior players hasn't a clue.We need them all.The players want to win the McCarthy Cup, they didn't take action lightly. My info is that there would have been a heave if Dublin beat us back in May, which they should have done.

Barnow194, In no way am I having a go at you, but this has become something of a cliché now about players who try to give management the heave ho. However this time of the year is the right time to do it, before an appointment has become solid and giving all sides a chance to think and move forward.

Is this talk about a player's father getting into the dressing room at half time true? If it is and Cunningham reacted, doesn't he have every right to react? The dressing room is not the place for squabbling, especially when 3 points up on the champions. I have seen the story being denied, but it still hasn't gone away.

I agree a clear out of the players makes no sense. After the disputes in both Cork and Limerick there was no clear out & I think had there been it would have been chaotic.

OH FGS, Now it emerges that Cunningham offered to resign, the players said no, but want changes to the backroom team. Does this mean than Damian Curley, Pat Malone or Eugene Cloonan are the problem. Or is it the medical team? It is really sad. It also marks a serious change in the players attitude since April in that they did not Cunningham to go. This for a Galway hurling fan like me this is unbelievably frustrating. Ok, we lost the final, but the most important thing is to build on this and get back next year. Just note that only 6 of the 2012 team played this years final, that is why continuity is important. It also explains why Cunningham wanted to stay as he has the support of the players after all. I thought for the last week he was simply mad or stubborn, if reports are to believed, I'm unsure what to think. AAAAAAAAGGGGGGGGHH.

Unless this situation is resolved soon a player strike could be on the cards. Do posters want that?

Seems like the suggestion that the players want the manager to stay is questionable.
Anthony Cunningham is reportedly on the verge of walking away in the coming days, as he believes:

"The players are very entrenched in their view on this. They are insistent that they need a new manager."

Why don't county boards develop a system whereby all crucial appointments to the county side are run by a committee where the players are represented and have a veto? We can see this hassle for galway and over on the limerick forum they are not happy at all about their new coach. I could totally understand players packing it in if their management set up goes completely against what the players feel is needed and what is necessary. That way the players have no excuses when they fail and are more likely to succeed. Don't know what limerick are dogged by so much controversy all the time. Player power is a positive thing and that's coming from someone who is about as anti-professionalism as can be.

Slayer I don't think you are having a go at me.I get your point about the cliche.what surprises me is the number of people who's default position is to support the manager and blame the players, especially when you consider that people have not the first idea of what has been going on in training , in the dressing room etc etc.
