P McMahon - 1 match ban

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Apolgise to Slayer but this is too good a 1 year ban because "His hand went towards Donaghy in a dangerous manner."

Its good real good

Take a look at the picture of the incident on the home page. See how far 'Philly's' hand is away from the ball? Yep, that is what I would prefer to not see creep into Gaelic Football. A player has the ball tucked into his chest and another sticks his hand in towards that player's eye. Hmmm, and people are still defending that ....... :-)

It was between sloppy and aggressive play but it is very difficult to say he went deliberately at a mans eye. My opinion this was not his intention. He deserves the benefit of the doubt - get off his case and admire him for being one of the top players of this championship. I think 1 match is more than adequate.

Agree with some of this. He is an excellent player and you would want someone of that calibre in your team. But all this talk of 'going to war' and then to end up with his fingers in someone's eye displays a nasty streak that I certainly wouldn't want coming into the GAA. But, like the Tiernan McCann incident, you can't just scapegoat someone based on public reaction so the one match ban in this case is more than adequate in my opinion.

However, if the GAA are serious about punishing eye gouging, maybe increasing the number of games to be banned for a player who gouges is appropriate. Punish from here on.

In my opinion, its difficult to say the opposite - that he didn't go deliberately for Donaghy's eye.

Why?

I'd say the Kerry boys slept easy last night knowing the Ballymun man won't be playing the first league game next year. The poor auld Gooch was probably having nightmares at the thoughts of meeting Philly next year.

I cant put think they have a wonderful way at disciplinary hearings in Rugby. They note your conduct prior to and and at the Hearing, your remorse, good character etc., etc.
Appears it is "gentlemen" appearing before "gentlemen": never mind that is a professional sport. We need to ensure we smarten ourselves up at GAA Hearings: wear collar and tie, polished leather shoes, make sure you only sit when told to and where. As well, do not forget Ps and Qs.
I'm sure Philly McMahon behaved impeccably at his Hearing but the GPA might need to consider training courses for players to ensure one's etiquette blah, blah, blah is impeccable before an appearance. Who knows, Philly McMahon might have received only a one game suspension in the O'Byrne Cup.
After all, we are all gentlemen, aren't we?

Justice has been done, nothing more to see here. I think the GAA needs to adopt a more rugby like attitude to fair play both on and off the pitch.
