Croke Park Roof

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

After hearing of Joe Kiernan's comments that Sunday's final would of been better played under a closed roof (no question it def would of been a better game in dry conditions).

What do folk reckon about a roof being on croke park? I personally can't ever see it happening with the cost and design. Mckenna has come out today saying the same.

Will not happen, exceptionally cost prohibitive and the stadium layout is not favorable to such an addition, I would have gladly got wet to my bones if my county was in that final last Sunday.

I think Gaelic footballs problems are at grass roots level, not the roof!

Ridiculous idea!

Football and hurling are outdoor sports. Simple as.

Playing the conditions is all part of the game.

They may possibly wanna have a look at why Croke Park's pitch seems to make it more difficult in the wet than other pitches though.

Only way a roof can be put in place is if hill 16 became a stand and a second tier was put in place and that wont happen and isn't needed

MesAmis is right these are outdoor sports, the conditions are part of the game. As for the roof aside from the fact one end is open. Also I would imagine given the relative sizes of pitches in all sports Croke is a rather large area and fitting a roof would be extremely expensive.

I reckon the stadium would need to be rebuilt. Maybe the next time around. I wonder do the GAA have a plan for 20-30 years from now. Who know's what the advances in tech and building will be but I imagine Croke Park in its current guise will be quiet outdated by then.

Whatever about a roof covering the whole pitch, it is ridiculous in this country that the roof does not cover the entire seating area. We were at the front of the Davin on Sunday and got soaked to the skin. I didn't mind too much as I was happy to get a ticket, however a woman and child beside me left their seats after 10 minutes and didn't return. 80 euro is a lot of money to spend on a ticket, maybe the GAA need to look at a different pricing structure for children and uncovered seats rather than the one price for all pricing structure for finals.

I think in general roofs on stadia are good.

But in GAA there is something added to a game when the rain falls. At the Kilkenny game in 2014, when Limerick reeled off 0-5 in a row to go 0-16 to 1-11 up, a lady with 3 or 4 kids turned and said to me 'I'm absolutely shaking'. I asked was she cold from the weather, but it was the atmosphere. The place was rocking, despite the horrendous conditions. Now we didn't win the game, but that performance will live long in the memory and in my opinion the rain added to the drama of the game. There was a passage of play down Limerick's left half back line in the second half where every player was giving each challenge 100% and not only did I feel proud as a Limerick man, but to see the Kilkenny lads matching that effort, hunger and desire in those conditions showed just how much both teams wanted that place in the final.

Sometimes the rain makes it epic!

Talk about taking the saying a 'Fairweather Supporter' to another level. Rain in Ireland - shock horror!

won't happen, too massive, unnecessary and would involve Hill16 end built up, which they'll never get planning permission for. also, if you're going to any outdoor event anytime of year in ireland, bring appropriate clothing. the GAA are responsible for many things, the weather, alas, aint one of them

It would be fantastic to have a roof added it would obvoiusly make for much better games. But it will not happen for reasons mentioned above. Hill 16 would need to be completed like the rest of the ground.

I disagree with people saying no because it is an outdoor sport. Sports stadiums all over the world have roofs and are for "out door" sports like soccer or rugby. However, I cannot see this happening at Croke Park in the next 30 years!

Even if there had been a roof, I doubt it wouldve been closed for Sunday as rain wasn't forecast. Don't see the point at all.

Agree with Bubba, crazy that so much of the lower tiers, which should really be the best seats in the house were left uncovered.

Haha read the 1st post and thought yeah a roof on Crocker would be a great idea. Then read on and agreed with guys saying the game is an outside sport and wet cold conditions are all part on the game..;) Players should be able to cope and adapt basically.

Bottom line is it won't happen as agreed with some who have said it would require a total rebuild which is just not going to happen. Maybe some work needs to be done on the pitch or the type of boot the players use as I felt the biggest problem with last Sundays game was about players not being able to keep their feet…

Another option which I am sure some would laugh at but may help with handling is change the coating on the ball to assist the players with grip… Might not be a bad shout to improve the game as a spectacle…;)
