Cycling is the one to get into. Im not advocating being a full kit w***** or anything, but it keeps you fit, keeps the weight off and is much easier on the joints. The running craze that is underway at present is going to result in a lot of guys with knee problems down the line. Particularly if you are a footballer/hurler, your joints have probably taken a bit of wear as it is.

Agree 100% on the running.

I used to run everyday as a teenager whilst hurling as well. I was mad for it but by 24 the body was turning on me! I've only played one season of senior hurling since and won't play another!

I've started swimming most days now for the last year and it keeps me good and fit but I miss the competitive hurling. Playing at a lower level now but struggle with the knees a lot.

If you're into your running I'd advise to join a proper club and do the right training.

Swimming is another good one alright, probably the best of the lot, but a lot of people cant swim - crazy when you think about how surrounded by water we are.

Slayer, either or. There is a bit of a social scene in it too. I know of guys who started out after football and now do malin to mizen cycles.

However, I must admit, I dislike the attitude many cyclists have towards vehicles and pedestrians, they want to make up their own rules for themselves yet are quick to rhyme off rules and regulations to everyone else. You are sharing at the end of the day, and every sharing scenario involves some give and take.

Yeah it's hard to beat the feeling in the lungs and chest after a good hour's swimming. Mighty for the old hangover as well!

Golf if you have the time. Can beat that competitive edge even if only with yourself.
Cycling not for me, cant see myself being a spandex bandit. The way some of these lads are kitted out you'd swear they were doing the team time trial at the tour de france.
Running on the road is very hard on the knees especially if you've had any damage from years of GAA. A bit of cross country is probably easier especially over the winter.
Yoga/Pilates/Calisthenics will prolong your shelf life significantly if you want to be an ageing warrior
