Keith Wood article

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

It has been very noticeable on here, what is an open forum that certain articles such as the one on Keith Woods thoughts on GAA that may be critical of the GAA & in particular its hierarchy disappear very fast, makes you wonder.

Just read the article there.
Still dont understand your point.
Are you suggesting that posters here do not tolerate criticism of the GAA?
The opposite is true. Theres constant criticism of the GAA here.
Wood is absolutely right by the way.

I remember before one of the rugby internationals in Croke Park K Wood was asked about hurling by Gabby Logan on BBC. He completely blanked her. I would take any criticism of the GAA by him with a large dose of salt.

Its looks to me like he's speaking as someone involved with a club who just has a platform afforded to him not alot of others have. He is dead right really TBH.

Agreed Kavvie. When we won the football all ireland in 1998 Wood was full of praise for the quality of the football in that final. Like us all his views might be somewhat different now but from what I knowvof him he is a sportsman who appreciates quality in all sports.

He has a point here, but I remember reading an article years ago about his hurling days, he reckoned his teammates in training were afraid of him. As if anyone would be, with his posh mucker voice

When he played u16 hurling for clare he was apporaching 16 stone. That would be frightening coming at you at that age.

A search of the BBC archives will confirm my observation. Shouldnt be too hard to find. There were only 5 rugby internationls in Croke Park. I was never a fan of his since that.Ronan O Gara was a much better ambassador for Ireland. In any event it was an inappropriate forum to be getting a dig at a competing sporting organisation.

Lads,

It's more elitist nonsense from the Rugby crowd. They think they are superior in every way. I wouldn't have had Wood down as one of them and probably still wouldn't.

We have an organisation we can and should be proud of and criticism from the like of the Rugby crowd is warranted or wanted. I'd have more time for John Delaney and the FAI than the IRFU lot.

Keith Wood is 100% right! You could replace Smith O Briens with any club in Cork. Our fixtures are a complete joke. Well done to Keith Wood to pointing that out!

You are obsessed with saying rugby is elitist. It isn't. Nobody is stopped from playing due to personal circumstances. Rugby is fair to all.
How and why do you have more time for FAI than IRFU?

I don't know what substitute you have for a backbone zul10, but anyone that's afraid of a 16 stone rugby player doesn't belong on a hurling pitch

Ormond,

Apologies, I meant to say Leinster Rugby is elitist. If you look at the background of Leinster senior and academy players that is obvious to see.

Leinster rugby isn't elitist and where some players go to school doesn't make it elitist.

When 95% of the academy players come from private institutes of education and that can afford the best of everything and are always going to be looked at first for places on development squads and underage squads I think it's accurate enough to describe it as elitist.

Leinster scouts and coachs go to the schools cup looking at talent. They don't turn up in the local club in clane or north kilare.

More players do play most of their rugby in their teens in fee paying schools but there is full squads at under 16/17/18 at regional and provincial level of players who play their rugby in clubs and more and more of them are making it to the top level.
Leinster coaches all go to the regional development games which involve the best players from all the clubs. They also go to the cup and league semi finals/finals of youths/clubs competitions.
Leinster coaches regularly are at the local club in clane/north Kildare and pick players for Leinster regional sides which compete in the Shane Horgan Cup - 5 teams North East/South East/Metropolitan etc and then the best are picked for the Leinster clubs(youths) side.
