Not surprised that anyone would pay to see Joe very day. I love watching him even though his form can dip at times. More than anyone I would love to see him win an AI medal..this year please!!

Lovely words from Quinner. A nice tribute for a great player.

Phenomenal player, as good as the likes of TJ and O'Dwyer are, Joe is that little bit special with an unmatched ability to produce moments of sheer brilliance and its his uniqueness as a player which sets him apart from the rest in my eyes

Great player no doubt, but i would rate JJ Delaney,TJ Reid,R Hogan,T Walsh & Henry as better players.Higher workrate is what sets them apart. My opinion only, but this has let Joe down at times over the years.

High praise indeed. A player that promised to be one of the greats but many players who were not as gifted have worked harder and will be remembered longer. At 26 his best days seem to be behind him
I could eat my words very quickly though

Yes cue, Joe may be considered a little lazy for the cats.

One of the best scores I ever witnessed was a point Quinn scored in the AI minor final in '83. On a blustery day he doubled on a ball in mid-air and sent in sailing between the Galway posts. I was at the Leinster final that year too when he hit three goals past Wexford. A former workmate hurled for Wexford that day and said later it was like trying to mark smoke he was so elusive.
As for Joe, easily the most naturally gifted hurler I've ever seen and that includes Whelehan, Frank Cummins, JBM, DJ, Joe Cooney et al

I might be wrong but I always thought Callinan was a couple of inches taller.

An inch of a difference apparently. According to yesterdays Indo Joe's 6'2" and 13st 12lbs, Seamus Callinan is 6'3" and 14st 7lbs. Both are 26 and imo neither could be described as overweight or unfit

Nothing against Joe, but I don't think he is even the best Galway hurler of all time.

What he has got going for him though is the intelligence to play anywhere from 8-15. He could probably play very well centre back also. It's a double edged sword when he is so adaptable. Bad 20 minutes at full forward, whip him out to centre, wing, third midfielder. Sometimes I wonder is it best to leave him at full forward? But then seeing his pass for the winning point yesterday - magic.

I think callanan is a better hurler anyway, a far better one recently

If Galway had lost yesterday a lot would have been down to Joe!! Missed a rake.

But is he fully fit, even seemed sluggish in the warm up??

I think Galway's problem is he is too good, and so too much ball goes through him. This year with him been injured the younger players have expressed themselves and as the reliance on him goes down Galway's performance levels go up. Its no longer mark Joe Canning and you mark Galway out of the game.

Its a tough one re: Canning. He has such expectation, unless he scores 1-15 per game, people are saying he's poor. I admit I thought he was off radar again yesterday. while at the game, but then read the stats and saw highlights- he actually scored ten points, 4 from play. AS well as that, he created many chances for others, including the lovely ball for winning score, as pointed out by a poster above.

In fairness, I saw him score 2-12 against Cork in 2008 and he was brilliant. Unmarkable, unreal etc etc. However, same as Callinan yesterday, we lost that game as the rest of team only scored three points and that amazing performance is now nigh forgotten. Yesterday, he was a team man (though should have passed to Smith outside for goal in second half). I'd much prefer Joe Canning to be a single cog in a well oiled machine that wins games rather than being a Cuchulainn-type player on a team which 14 passengers that cant get over the line.

We now see with Galway, the more spread of scorers, the better we are.7

Galway have moved on. The younger players are team players full of confidence. If Galway were still depending on Joe they'd have lost yesterday in a similar fashion to Tipp and their dependence on Callanan. Joe may have reached his peak by now but if he does have one more kick in him Galway will win the Final providing they don't gobackto over relying on him.

Im sure he has plenty of kick left, he's on 26!

He needs to be careful on his tackling as well. Could easily have gotten a red yesterday for flick on Tipp defender, and previous days too.

To be fair Barry helped him. Got up pretty much right away, didn't make a meal of it.

Canning is a fine hurler, a weapon of mass destruction in reality.
