Discrediting the association...precedence

Richieq you can't create a ban when the rule states it's a different punishment. If i had my way diving would carry a ban but you can not change the rules mid season. If you are taking retrospective action you can not focus on one player, you have to ban everyone who has banned this year. Sure they aren't even acting against everyone who dived in the game!!! This ban is insane.

Lads, the sanction for simulation is a yellow card not 8 weeks. The ban will be overturned. It was a disgraceful thing for Mc Cann to do but he is only punishable by the rules.
To attempt to achieve an advantage by feigning a foul or injury.
PENALTY FOR ABOVE FOUL -
(i) Caution offender; order off for second
cautionable foul.

This is what Mc Cann did and the punishment is outlined above!

This is not the only dive ever captured on camera. Why is this the only time a ban has been imposed? Do not reply the answer is obvious

Does kicking a 21 yard free wide count as discrediting the association?

1768770 What sort of ban do you get for biting someone ?

8 weeks

So what McCann did is the equivalent of biting someone. Interesting.

No, think that comes under Discrediting the Family.

Are players who signal wides when it's obviously a point going to get bans now too for trying to influence/con the referee/umpires and therefore discrediting the Organisation? Or what rule does that fall under?

I look forward to reading the list of 8 week bans handed out in the coming days - the CCCC are going to have some job on their hands going through all the footage.

What about them Hot Dogs on offer in Croke Park. Surely they are a discredit to the association. Can you give an 8 week ban to a Hot Dog?

the GAA is creating a reputation for itself as a knee jerk sensationalist organisation. First off let my clear one thing up, I am against diving and simulation and I believe its right to punish those clearly caught in the act. However, its been an increasing problem over the last number of years and if anything to date its been swept under the carpet until of course RTE/twitter shine a light on it and without any real thought, at the business end of the championship the letter of the law appears on this issue all of a sudden.

A few months back a trio of lads from Ballinderry decided to speak their mind on twitter, another issue that fell victim to sensationalism, and what happens? they were given 48 week bans at the click of a finger, clearly without any forethought as after an appeal by the three fellas their bans were reduced to 8 weeks which was a long way of the initial reaction. Considering how often players/managers use twitter any action taken must be carefully assessed given how grey an area it is and how things can be taken out of context etc yet the GAA just charge in with a reckless ban which would be impossible to live up to consistently moving forward.

Then look at the whole 'Anthony Nash rule' in hurling. Another example of a few penalties becoming sensationalised so in comes the knee jerk rule change to bring the penalty out further, lose sight of the fact that a penalty should be a reward for the team who was fouled. Prime example was Kilkenny making penalty saving look easy in last years AI final which cost Tipp their whole season. Then change it back after enough damage was done.

This trend can't continue and if there are changes to be made to the rules then they should be done with careful planning and only change them if you are certain they will make a difference for the better. Anything done in mid season is scandalous and Tyrone have a right to feel aggrieved after Sunday when we can count several other similar incidents that took place throughout the season that went unpunished. Dublin and Mayo get ready to be put under the microscope and you have HQ to blame for it!

GAA is increasingly reacting to the media in everything it does. With vague rules "Discrediting the organistation" or "Bringing the game into disrepute" you can punish ANYTHING.

Everyone bemoans the cynicism that is a growing problem in GAA games but the whinging starts the moment firm action, that might root out the problem, is taken. Hart has brought great success to Tyrone and instilled a self belief in their players that will see them able to compete at the top level long after he has gone. However the gamesmanship that has developed at all levels of football in Tyrone during his tenure will also last long after he has gone.

I wonder what county the 1st person to be suspended for kicking the ball off the keepers tee will be from?

Breffni, they are just waiting for a Tyrone player to do it and then they'll make up another rule and ban him indefinitely.

Next up is "Who's first to get suspended for looking at an opposition player in an angry manner"

Yeah it was northern teams that introduced it and Tyrone perfected it, at all levels. One can only assume that Mickey Harte coaches his players to do it.

Go back to the Munster final replay when shields blatantly dived, yet no suspension. Also, a Kerry player clearly goaded an opponent after scoring their goal, yet again no suspension. This rule seems ridiculous, and I doubt mc cann's suspension will stand.

Scandalous decision. Totally without justification. RTE spawned this ban, O'Rourke and Whelan. Did O'Rourke mention the greatest dive of all time in GAA i.e. his countyman Joe Sheridan diving across the line in the Leinster Final a few years in a cheating action. How long was he banned for??

I think diving like that should warrant a 1-2 game suspension which is what he will likely get anyway (8 weeks makes it sound worse unless it covers club games too). But, as much as I think it's deserved you can't change the rules in the middle of the championship like that. I think it's inevitable he will get off or at least get the ban reduced as Tyrone will have a strong case and will likely bring up Shields and the rule book. I can't stand what he did but the amount the lad is being vilified is way over the top.
