1982 Football Final

The defining moment of the Television Age of the GAA.

Easy for me to state that I suppose (especially given the outcome), but can"t think of anything that tops it given the magnitude of the event and the dramatic conclusion.

Sorry Kildare lads....but to this day I still don't know what Murphy was at flicking that ball up like that, so much on the line. That was an unbelievable game.

When 'push' comes to 'shove' I suppose 82 was a bit dramatic alright. Ask poor Tommy Dole about it!!!!!!

!994, Offaly hurlers going to town on Limerick in the last 6 minutes , unbelievable stuff.

From a Tyrone point of view I have a choice between 3

Conor Gormley's block in the 03 final, think thats because it was the final and against our neighbours
God's last minute free against, again armagh in the Semi 2005
2005 drawn game against the Dubs, losing at half time, Mugsys goal, and Mossy Quinns last min point - most entertaining game ive ever saw

Every Single game in the 1991 Saga. Last minute scores, Extra time, Full house every game, Foleys Goal & of course Beggys goal to win it in the end. Makes the hairs stand on my neck

After a long discussion with pub friends on this it has to be these 2:

Hurling - Ciaran Carey's point v Clare in 1996 Limerick 1-13 Clare 0-15
Football - Offaly's winning goal in the 1982 All-Ireland football final Offaly 1-15 Kerry 0-17

The last minute score to win by a point is part & parcel of what makes GAA great. Both of these scores/finishes are iconic within the GAA and if you show them to anyone who has never seen Gaelic Games they would feel the excitement.

Both examples above are of a of a single score to win but in terms of more than one score, these two really stand out.

Hurling - Offaly 3-16 Limerick 2-13 1994 All-Ireland final. It was 2-13 to 1-11 to Limerick with 5 minutes to go. Enough said.
Football - Meath 2-10 Dublin 0-15 1991 4th game. Dublin led by 3 points and then Meath put that goal together. The only score I can compare it to is the All-Blacks try to deny Ireland the win over them in late 2013. Each pass was perfect, each man who received the ball seemed to ratchet up the danger until suddenly there is a man in position who cannot miss. Meath's ruthlessness was shown by not settling for a draw - winning the kick out and Beggy getting the point to win the game.

Remember us playing Cavan in 08 qualifiers. Second game of the McGeeney era after losing to Wicklow. We were 2 points down deep into injury time only for Mick Foley to run the whole length of the pitch pass into James Kavanagh to slot it into the net. McGeeney probably would have gotten the bullet that night if we lost

As a Longford fan, 2 dramatic finishes spring to mind - one good, one bad; Beating Derry in the qualifiers in 2007 with a last gasp free from the majestic (and sorely missed) Paul Barden from 45 metres out was definitely a good one. The O'Byrne Cup Final in 2008 still hurts. Playing Dublin in Parnell Park.. being ahead for the whole game.. Jayo being sprung from the bench.. He scores a cracking goal.. Then (despite the ball going out over the endline) he goes through the defence like a hot knife through butter and scores a second to seal the win..

82 final is hard to beat but a worthy mention has to be 2001 Connacht Final, 2 points down into the fifth minute of injury time and Gerry Lohan gets a goal, hard to top them two!
