Most dramatic finishes to matches

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

What have been the most dramatic finishes to matches down the
years????

Sorry to bring this up Limerick fans but I think it has to be the 1994
hurling final against Offaly???I remember thinking that had to have
been one of the most sickening defeats in history.

The Seamus Darby final when five in a row was on then off???

Of the matches ive attended in my life the Down/Kildare semi final
stands out???Kildare,2 pts down, hitting the bar from a free in about
the 5th minute of injury time.

The most dramatic finish I've seen was the 2002 Under 21 Munster Final replay in Thurles. Limerick had scored a late Eoin Foley penalty to draw the first game 3-9 to 2-12. We had the replay in Thurles again & were 4 points down in injury time. We got 1-1 to level it and Tipp had a man sent off before Limerick just pulled away to win 1-20 to 2-14.

Don't think I've ever seen another GAA team get 1-1 in a minute of injury time.

2 games in 2011 that spring to mind
Qtr final between Kildale and done gal wasn't the best game in the world but in terms of tension and excitement and the drama of cassiddys massive winner it was up there ultimately that game I think paved the way for done gals success in the next year's and Kildares demise
The 2011 all Ireland is right up there too what a way for Dublin to win ... kerry looking like they had it with 4 points up . Cluxtons 45 was special
Haven't seen such excitement in the last couple of years imo !

What was special about it? :-)

A keeper had previously scored a '45' - Brian Scanlon for Limerick in the 2010 division 4 NFL final ....
He took something like 2 minutes to come up the field & kick it which one would have to say was cynical.....
He ran off down the tunnel straight after the game drawing a lot of attention to the fact that he doesn't like attention :-)

A great win for the Dubs nonetheless but McMenamins's goal was the key moment in my opinion.

Slayer in terms of sheer drama which is what the post is about not time wasting ... Cluxton ability to hold his nerve and score with essentially the last kick of the game to win Dublins first all Ireland in 16 years I think was special

Fair point rossy15

Nerve is definitely a factor. 80,000 people watching can force errors and he didn't flinch.

That Kildare Donegal game will love long in the memory had me on the edge of my seat, Sidebottoms commentary was also hilarious and added to the occasion "CASSIDYYY ITS OVER, Donegal Delirium". Mayo Kerry first game last year was also great to watch in terms of excitement

I was down the other end HenryHill16, Canal End.

Memories:

A few of our older crew moving downwards on the terrace to see Limerick get the cup. Stopped when Offaly got their 3rd goal, 2nd in a minute and went a point up.

An ould lad alongside me taking off his Paddy Cap and proudly displaying an Offaly paper hat underneath (when they went 3 points up). All through the game he kept saying 'Limerick are too good'. I thought he was one of us.

Walking past the Offaly dressing room as we made our way out of the ground. Mad celebrations. Just thought 'fair play to them'.

Silence on the bus going home until someone let off a stinker around Mountrath and we all got out for a gallon of porter.

The empty feeling on the Monday when the reality hit home. Trying to switch on Limerick radio for answers but only getting static.

A desperate desperate feeling it was. But 21 years on I have to say it was only sport and worse things happen in life.

Ciaran Mac's winner v The Dubs in 2006. Not just the score but the way they started the move from the back.

Munster Final Replay of 1976 which ended officially in another draw. One scoreboard in Pairc Ui Chaoimh had Cork winning by two points and the other had Kerry winning by one. Such was the excitement and confusion that the PA announcer told everybody to stay in their seats until he checked the score with the referee John Moloney. A few minutes later he announced that the official result was a draw and that extra time was necessary. Pure bedlam reigned for a while.

The 2 games you mentioned, REDANDBLACK30, immediately come to mind. A less famous one was a preliminary round Ulster championship game in the early 90s when Fermanagh led Armagh by 10 points in the 68th minute. The ref played about 7 minutes of injury time and Armagh scored 3-2 to win by a point. Clare footballers were 4 points down against Cork with 2 minutes to go in the mid nineties - they pulled back a couple of points and then won the game with a last-gasp goal worked from a close-in free.

I vaguely remember a game in September 82.

1. Was it a derby, or what?
2. Did they win... by a Furlong?
3. How was the Matt finish applied?

A puzzle, for shure!
