RTE and Tyrone

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Why are so many people saying that RTE overlook Tyrone's good play and focus on the cynical side of the game instead? Last night they spent much of their time praising how they played, the performances of players like Donnelly, McCann, Harte etc. However they also had to analyse the part of the game most people were talking about which was the final 15 minutes that was an embarrassment for anyone who loves gaelic football. They done this fairly as well, highlighting that both teams were to blame. Do people just repeat lies on here about RTE only focusing on the negative in the hope of discrediting the very valid points the analysts make?

Drumlinbelt. Is that what kept Monaghan in an hotel in Monaghan town until 12 noon on Saturday. were they waiting on helmets??? cause the wee bad boys from across the border were in Dublin???? It was boys playing men ? We were beaten by a team of mainly u21s.

No bias at all. The lads are rightly calling it as they see it. It used to be arm clamping and sledging but diving and feigning injury are now high on the agenda. I remember in the 2011 1/4 final watching Tyrone players clamping Dublin backs arms and throwing themselves to the ground in the hope and winning a free and getting the opponent booked. McMahon was copped by the referee and booked for it but unfortunately another Tyrone player got away with it in the second half, won the free and the Dublin player was booked. Who was it only SON? I was disgusted, not by the deliberate tactic but because a player of his ability should stoop so low. I was a big fan of Sean C. He is a giant of the game and conducts himself very well when interviewed. He would almost be a role model for any youg kid.......except he has let this diving act blight his game. Smaller, more skillful players come in for a lot worse treatment yet it takes a lot more to bring them to ground. The SG fellas had it spot on. Players seemingly shot, hitting the deck rolling around, then springing up as soon as the ball is turned over. O'Rourke might have put extra gas behind his criticism but the facts were correct. Contoversy continues to follow them around 'like a bad smell' and this year they have had it at minor, U21 and senior. The Tyrone boys need to stop the circling of the wagons and begin asking the questions in-house. Only Tyrone can attempt to repair their reputation.

Yes there are always isolated incidents with some teams, bitegate, the Shields dive, the Davey Byrne incident, Nicholas Murphy, the parade fight etc. but Tyrone's name keeps coming up, this year at three levels. They have the players to do the job without having to resort to some of the nonsense that we saw on Sat.

feigning injury is one thing but going to the bother that Finlay went to is another. what type of play do you call that. Pure Manly behaviour. a fist to the nape of the neck to finish off a good knee in the lower spine. If the ccc examine this he will get about 6 months from all games. Mc Cann was stupid rolling around the place and The Ref saw he was mimicking but he dident punish him. The reason why Hughes got his red was of the foul he was after commiting on another player and the ref would have been infuriated that he lifted his hand to taunt a player while waiting on his sending off card. We were beaten by 55 mins. Good job the handbag stuff started otherwise it could have been a rather embarrising defeat.

Joxer, did you see Rory O'Carroll last year standing with his back to play in front of Neil Gallagher and waving his arms in front of his face? Then when Neil got frustrated and got booked for throwing him out of the way, ROC immediately switched on to Murphy to do the same thing? That, to me is just as cynical and frustrating to see as anything else and obviously pre-planned to make it worse.

All these people on their high horse about Tyrone but happy to ignore incidents when it doesnt suit their agenda. McCann was absolutely stupid to do what he did but the outcry is outrageous and totally biased. Rarely have I seen a team ship as many high tackles and sneaky hits as Tyrone did yesterday. Instead of being chastised for being on the ground so much Sean Cavanagh should be lauded for continually getting back up and getting stuck in for more. By the end of the game he had taken at least 2 high tackles, a knee to the back, a punch to the back of the head and had about a 10cm cut on his neck but we have Joe Brolly laying into him again.

Call a spade a spade Benjyy and don't be hiding behind non-incidents in other games. There is no bias. What did the SG panel call out that didn't actually happen? Imagine this. Imagine if Tyrone players didn't dive or feign injury, imagine if there were no dirty blows (by both teams). What would the panelists be talking about? Football! If none of this nonsense happens then it won't be talked about. True Tyrone have a reputation already, based on the antics of certain players over the years, so it probably is a tougher task for them to shake the bad name. But you won't do it by acting the way some of their players did on Sat, that's for sure.

a clear agenda on here by numerous posters..ignoring and dismissing other incidents..what exactly happened in the u21 match?..i seen tyrone players receive harsher treatment especially mcshane...o rourke is a pretty laughable analyst...he made a point about lee keegan missing the replay last year..the man was at the match yet doesnt realise lee keegan played in that match..this man is paid for this type of stuff..does he even do any research before making his points?....he usually rants about sky in the newspaper..mpst people dont seem to realise that mccann didnt get hughes sent off..hughes was already being sent off for his laughable attempt at a tackle in the lead up to the incident..most of what monaghan did in that game was brushed under the carpet and ignored...nothing annoys me more than the high horse brigade that exists only when it suits whichever county they want to win...a certain style of play and level of integrity must be observed however when their own side finds themselves doing the same things they criticize others for they simply ignore it..the hypocrisy is just gone out of control

What went on on Saturday evening was no worse than last year's replayed semi final in Limerick In my book Mayo were hard done by last year, indeed a good friend of mine here in London ( Tipperary man) who was at the game told me that the Kerry backs targeted Mayo forwards from the off What about the fisticuffs that night, were any of the two teams asked to apologise
What about the recent Dublin v Armagh challenge game in which a Dublin player ended up in hospital The GAA were not going to look at it at all and J Gavin gave such a silly interview to a reporter about the incident.
Nicholas Murphy was more or less taken out of an All Ireland final, where were O Roark/ Spillane and co then ? And the player that done it admitted afterwards He intended to 'Do' a player in a book he published. Was that player managed by M Hart ?? HE WAS NOT, he was from a county that supposibily don't do things like that.
Was in Croke park in , I think 1996, Tyrone v Meath and before half time three Tyrone players, C mcBride, P Canavan and B Dooher going around with bandages on their heads and with a Meath defender accused of stamping. Weren't much of an uproar about that.
What about Clare v Waterford hurling games in the 90's ---- plenty of timber drawn there
I know that they were serious allegations laid at Tyrones doorstep over the minor game v Donegal and it was serious what was alleged to have taken place and stuff like that can't be allowed to creep into the game I don't know what the end result was but how can you prove things like that In fairness to a lot of Tyrone supporters on here they did condem it
Over the last five years we have played Tyrone four times in the Ulster championship, was at three of the games but missed this year and indeed there was a me Lee at half time but that was the only time in our four meetings anything happened They give us real tough hard games and were unlucky on two occasions. I did not see the MC Cann incident but I was beside the Meyler black card incident which I thought was harsh Now I have a lot of respect for both Tyrone /Monaghan and I was disappointed with Monaghan ( thought they would win) but I can't have this wholesale criticism of Tyrone. O Roark is the least qualified to talk , him and his team were well able to dish it out and I bet many a right dig he gave in his time , fair or foul. He seems to hate Tyrone and Donegal , himself and Spillane must be delighted to see Donegal gone
There are a lot of nasty things happening in games ( I'd say some are planned) and Tyrone are no worse than some other teams. I hope they beat Kerry and hope to see a Mayov Tyrone final. If I were Tyrone I'd stick to my guns, pay no heed to Rte as other counties have done just as bad but they are never highlighted M hart should continue with his boycott

Maybe advising Tyrone to "stick to their guns"isnt the most appropriate advice.

Border Gael , Cuchulain and Browncows
You all made good points and Border Gael especially you sum edit up very well
On a lighter point , was that the first time ever any of you saw three teams from the one providence in Croke park at the same time.
ULSTERS FINEST , TYRONE MONAGHAN AND DONEGAL
Donegal came out as soon as the final whistle went.

Well what had the sky pundits got to say about the end of game antics? RTE were calling it like it was, so what were our friends over on sky saying? Surely not discussing "tactics!!". I was watching it via illegal free streaming so thankfully I was spared that much.

Thought Tiernan McCann's stunt was appalling myself, then maybe it's my age. Two youngsters (early 20s) at work, still playing club football saw nothing at all wrong with it. Both said they would behave in a similar manner.......just shows you!

WOW!benjyyy ,standing in front of a player and waving your hands, now that's dispicable.
Surely that deserves a ban. Can't believe that actually happened.

If Tyrone get to the All Ireland final, will Mickey Harte talk to RTE. It would be a strange build up if only one side speaks to the primary media outlet.

Tyrone will love all this bad coverage they are getting and it may spur them on. Write MH and Tyrone off at your peril is what I say.

Monaghan were poor Saturday and Tyrone won by 4 points, there could be two big games in them yet and they all believe that they are good enough to Win SAM from talking to their supporters.

As an impartial observer i'd say the truth lies somewhere in the middle of the arguments on here. Yes Tyrone probably are one of the more guilty offenders however the SG panelists also embarrass themselves with their selective analysis. Some counties appear to be immune to criticism eg Sean Cavanagh was apparently the worst devil to walk the face of the earth after pulling down McManus in last years q/f yet a kerryman was lauded for fighting to the last minute even when the game was won for an almost identical tackle. If some of the 'analysis' on the SG wasn't so pathetic it would be funny. They seem more concerned with sensationalising incidents for their own agendas than proving u bias commentary. Time to ditch these clowns and bring in more articulate guys - the hurling is miles ahead in this dept.

SLLY - so you think thats acceptable and within the spirit of the game? Not surprising really as its Dublin but I would imagine if Tyrone did it you and others would be adding it to their naughty list of crimes against the beautiful game.

I watched the Sunday Game last night as I was still getting over our defeat on Saturday and just couldn't on Sunday night.

I read comments here yesterday that made me think they must have really been sore on Tyrone but watching it last night I felt they were very fair in the comments. They did say that both teams were at it, that Monaghan lost their discipline too and also highlighted the punch on Cavanagh. What they said about Tyrone was all correct IMO and they didn't tell any untruths. Mickey Harte himself has said that Mc Cann done wrong and will learn from this and hopefully he will as he's young but the two Cavanagh's have been doing this for years so they won't change. O' Rourke was also correct in that Tyrone seem to be involved in lots of incidents at every grade and that's not down to people being against them or wanting to keep them down. I have plenty of mates in Tyrone and they're great fellas but there does seem to be a large contingent of Tyrone fans that don't behave well and the goading I personally got from some of them leaving Croke Park on Saturday really turns me against them.

Donegal have met Monaghan in the past three Ulster Finals, have met Mayo in 2 quarters and one final, Dublin in two semi's and Kerry in a quarter and a AI final and have never had any issues with their fans. We have actually enjoyed the banter with Monaghan fans over the past few years and they are both good winners and good losers but the experience I have had with Tyrone fans over the past few years has been anything but favourable. There does seem to be a chip on the shoulder of Tyrone GAA at present that is taking away from the undoubted talents they have. Mattie Donnelly and Peter Harte are two of the most consistent and talented footballers in Ireland and we should be celebrating these talents but they are being overshadowed but other events.

Cue the Tyrone posters making comments about Donegal!!

The first one to call it in this whole thread and its a Monaghan man. Tyrone weren't always guilty party in the game on Sunday. Conor McManus also though giving Cavanagh an elbow in the stomach but that's okay to everyone cause the media just show what they want you to see and tell you all what to think. If we do win the All-Ireland this year its going to be a short Sunday Game if they are not doing interviews from the winners hotel. I wouldnt be too surprised if Tyrone end up not getting a fair referee, it was bad enough we got Marty bloody Duffy, I said it to many people that he could have been the difference between the two sides on Saturday. I can see why its tough at club games to referee but in an all-ireland quarter final you have 4 Umpires, 2 Linesmen a 4th official and a referee the fella is on par if not worse than Sludden. Do we need a TMO in croke park along with hawk eye?

Tyrone aren't alone in this. There's plenty of cynical play from other counties too, anyone remember this from 2011? - https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=o8kzJ0yLcWs. Donegal players went down inured every time Dublin scored a point in the second half of last year's semi-final to stop momentum before making quick recoveries.

Mayo pulled down play after player in the 2nd half of the 2012 semi-final against Dublin to stop them getting a goal, Kieran Donaghy's sole purpose in life seems to be playing with one had in the full-back's face and there was no outcry when Darragh O'Sé recommended fouling marquee players off the ball in the Irish Times a few weeks back. Had Ryan McMenamin written that piece everyone would have gone mad. Dublin aren't beyond reproach either as Benjy pointed out.

The problem isn't Tyrone, it's how to deal with divers, thugs and cheats. Incidents should be called out when they happen but it should be done consistently to every county.
