Sport on TV in Pubs on Sunday

Was in Galway city to watch the hurling today and went to a span new Sports pub in Eyre Square.Watched the minor match on the silent screen, fair enough. But when the senior game Kilkenny v Waterford came on the staff turned up the volume for the Liverpool match. When I queried this, I was told that this is what people wanted. I don't know if that is the truth. Went to another new pub and the hurling was on most screens with sound commentary and great banter.
Is this the way these new foreign pubs are going to operate then maybe they would be better not been supported by the good Galway supporters. or visiting tourists.I believe I am speaking for the silent majority who go into watch a match during the summer Sundays and are disappointed by the service.
Is this what we want or should we just put up with it.
What pub are you referring to? McGettigans is it? If there wasn't people watching the hurling and regulars etc wanted the soccer why shouldn't the hurling be shown. McGettigans if that was the pub is Irish and irish owned. They are not foreign pubs

I believe there are restriction as to how many live games pubs can show in the UK but there are none here. If you walk through Cork City of a weekend for the next 9 months you will here the distinctive sound of English soccer commentary from virtually every pub you pass. For every visitor to our country we are sending them a message loud and clear. "What are you doing here? The real action is across the water!"
Do you have a link to these restrictions on live games in pubs in UK? Whats wrong with pubs showing what their customers want?

Most urban pubs have three and four TV's/screens now so that all clientele can watch their favourite game.

should be the way and in dublin from my experiance is that way
but in limerick they only show one sport on all screens anytime I am there.
one time a few years back took the biscuit
munster were playing a rabo game in thomond park and the pub had the game on live on tv.
there was about 20 watching it.
match was over and I asked your man would he put on the world darts semi final
so he puts it on the screen for me where I was sitting.
15 mins later he turns it off, I said whats going on why you changing channell.
informs me the manager told him he was to put a recording of the munster match on instead
as people coming back from the game might want it on.
so all 5 tvs in the pub were showing the recording of a game they had just shown live

Haha hill, for a rabo game thats mad,but guess their rugby mad down there.Quite a few Dublin pubs had our two All Ireland wins on when i was there soon after the games finished.Dublin pubs are very GAA friendly & ive been in some that would have Dublin games on the big screens & Liverpool/UTD etc on small screens.

Are you really surprised. The majority of rugby and soccer players in this land of ours play at nothing more than pub team level. I will be lambasted for saying this but most of the rougher establishments in ireland are frequented by loudmouthed soccer types. The posh rugby types have their own bars where heino and west brit accents are order of the day. Choose wisely true gaels.

ormondbannerman, there are some restrictions as to how many live games bars can show in the UK alright or at least there was until recently. Maybe dahayeser can provide a link, a quick google didn't turn anything up but friends of mine over there have mentioned it.

I have no problem with people enjoying a good soccer match but english Soccer is an unhealthy obsession in Ireland. Surely it is wierd that more Dubs would be unhappy than proud if one of their local teams beat Man Utd in Europe! Thats not just Dubs, it goes for just about any county, crazy stuff. People say irish soccer is terrible, well maybe thats because they keep funding the English alternative at its expense! Anyway if it is standard they are after shouldn't they be watching Barca, Real or Bayern. Herd mentality, Sky hype up the Premier League so they all buy in. A little bit of independent thought wouldn't go astray. We are not noted for that though, rember the property boom! It's a very irish thing we knock our own and believe the hype across the water.

Restrictions here would be a good thing in my opinion. As other posters pointed out we are promoting a different country insessently. If forigners walked in to a bar and saw hurling on the TV a quick word with a local and they would be directed to an up coming game. Similarly if they saw one of our soccer rugby teams on the box. The subliminal messages we send them are - find the nearest Airport and catch a game over in England!

No problem in Dingle this weekend and plenty of Donegal, Monaghan & Tyrone supporters there too to create a bit of atmosphere as they were down for the horse & pony racing festival.

Have to agree with Bumpernut in re to Derry/Londonderry. Stopped on way home from Donegal hoping to watch some GAA and found it almost impossible in this town of multiple tvs in their pubs and that includes the Downey brothers establishment.
Was even more shocked at the number of middle aged men in chelsea shirts, what other part of nationalist north of Ireland would have people wearing the shirts of a club associated with rightwing english NF type groups and connected to glasgow rangers and their support band?
God help those who are trying to keep Irish games going in stroke city

Looking at McGettigan's website this morning they have advertised for Tipp V Galway and Chelsea v Man City for next Sunday. Both games are on at the same time.Seen that the Liverpool game got priority last Sunday over Kilkenny v Waterford(which in my opinion would be the 2nd most important hurling fixture after the All Ireland Hurling Final. You can only assume that it will be Man City/Chelsea that will get priority this Sunday. I would be better off going out to Currys and watch the Galway v Tipp match in their shop full of wonderful screens with the sound turned down than going to McGettigans to to do same with the football blaring in my ears and paying good money for a few pints. McGettigan's cannot broadcast two different games with sound so when it comes down to choosing it will not be the national game that will get priority.

It happened to me on Paddys Day this year in Drogheda. I went into the first pub to watch the All Ireland hurling and football club finals. The Manager did not even know they were on. He had the racing on so I went to the next pub. They also had the racing on and the barman only changed the station when one of the customers who drinks in that pub the whole time asked him to switch it. I would not mind that second pub that I was in is meant to be a GAA pub.

in some respects your correct
but also you have to factor in if they persist with that way of doing things
they will never get new customers
if you have 5 or 6 screens in the pub
it makes much more buisness sense to show different sports on the screens
if their is a gaa match a rugby match and a soccer match all on
why not have two screens showing each
that way your catering for regulars and new customers
your also catering for people who have an interest in numerous sports
its a win win situation for a pub.

nearly all the rugby shown in pubs is irish teams playing.....

simply having 6 television screens doesn't mean the publican can show 2/3 different programs. That would require 3 sky subscriptions and pub subscriptions are very expensive

1,200 euro a month is hardly very expensive for a pub haha
if they can afford to stock some pointless drinks that they often loose money on
or items on a menu that dont get sold everyday
then 1,200 a month to bring in new customers
spending on avergae at least 10euro each over the course of a sports event
is certainly good business sense

It varies on the pub as to its being expensive. "Loose money" .....
Pointless drinks....
where are you pulling figure of people who watch a sports event spend at least a tenner? Do you have a link for that or is it your own hypothesis?

My local is a hotel in West Dublin. A lot of pubs are Guinness owned or serve Guinness. Guinness is probably the biggest supporter of Irish rugby. They sponsor the Guiness Rabo league and the Uk Premier league in Rugby. They always fly the Guiness rugby flag in the pub also. Heineken support Soccer. So drinks companies support Rugby really. It is hard for the GAA to deal with that. Given the way the Media (See RTE and Tyrone) slag off GAA all the time.

Best place to watch the GAA is probably abroad where expats pack pubs,in london watched lots of games in Kingdom in Kilburn , Lucky 7 in cricklewood, tonys in Willesden...all packed no matter who was playing with volume up to the last & all standing for national anthem....sadly a lot of our modern irish have been brainwashed by sky watching what by and large boring soccer with fellows diving like tiernan mccann every two minutes.

Lads it might surprise you all to learn that the vast majority of Irish people have no interest in the GAA and most sports fans would prefer to watch the EPL than Monaghan and Tyrone or whatever game happens to be on at the time .

ah here I dont need some hot shot with a piece of paper degree to do a survey and get a random figure
the average consumption of a pint is a bout 30 mins
do the maths people will drink at least 2 during a game then and maybe some food with it.
theres not many people who go to a pub and dont spend a tenner in fairness
even two or three minerals clocks that up nearly.
