Fermanagh's first goal?

As for Cluxton being a weakness, that's laughable. There isn't a county who wouldn't have him in a heartbeat.

Really not sure about that.

Dublin's 6 backs have become adept at stripping their markers of the ball in the last third. As a result, Cluxton faces very few shots in a game. When he does, he is not a great keeper in one to ones. Aerially, he tends to take a quick look at his opponent just before a high ball comes in meaning he can be put off. He takes free kicks, but Brian Scanlon of Limerick was doing that at the same time before it became fashionable.

The kick outs are obviously what sets him apart but I see that as an extension of the team play Dublin have put in place.

Now this is just my opinion, I've no problem with anyone thinking differently or showing evidence to the contrary. But let's say if he was playing with a county in Munster other than Kerry, I don't think he would stand out at all. The fact is he plays for the most consistent team over the last 5 seasons which makes him look a better keeper than he is. (again, just my opinion)

this is what I said:

I think he is a weakness as Dublin go into the last 4.

Let's see how the games go and if I am incorrect I am more than prepared to eat humble pie here between now & September.

if all positions are treated equally and a goalie is as important as a back as a forward etc etc..then for me, Cluxton is one of the greatest players to ever play the game, and probably the best Dublin footballer of all time
he is THAT good and has been for 14 years

Best Dublin footballer of all time?

Big statement there Liam. I think about 5 of the lads who played from 78-85 were serious footballers who would have a say in best Dublin footballer of all time, probably didn't get the praise they deserved because of the head to head record v Kerry. Just wondering if your view is shared among Dublin fans?

Sure we could all do that Slayer but you think he's a weakness which is laughable honestly, do you think Durcan is a weakness ? I don't but he made the biggest blunder in all Ireland final history it happens there only human , Liam I would agree with that Cluxton is the greatest we've produced no doubt.

More influential and better than Brian Mullins or Anton O'Toole, each of whom have won four senior All-Irelands medals??.

Paddy Cullen 78? :-)

Fair point on Durcan. Lots of opinion given on this topic so I don't want to be hogging it, but if Cluxton goes on to play his part in a solid remainder of the championship for ye, I'll be back to mix it with ye predators, then to get to the choppa and out of here.

Cluxton has iconic status in Dublin GAA.He has revolutionised the art of goalkeeping. He was the pioneer of goalkeepers in taking free kicks and having a high conversion rate.He has scored the winning point in an All Ireland final v Kerry. His kick outs are generally acclaimed to be the best ever.He goes about his business,in a quiet, unassuming & dignified manner. For me anyway,S Cluxton is up there with K Heffernan,B Mullins,J Keavney,C Whelan etc as one of our greats.

A serious question now.

If Cluxton did this in the 2015 final, would you see it as a mistake? Deary me, very sensitive about your keepers!

slayer, for the best Dublin footballers of the "modern era" i look at Keaveney, Hickey, Mullins, Barr, O'Leary, Curran, Rock (Snr), Alan Brogan, Bernard Brogan and Stephen Cluxton
And if all positions are equal and all players are taken for their contribution to the greater good of Dublin football, for what he has done, Cluxton is the greatest Dublin footballer of all time and totally underappreciated by some.

A far more influential figure in the current Dublin team methinks. His goal v Mayo in the 2013 final was crucial and in general he contributes a lot in almost every game he plays. It is weird that there is not the same affection towards him.

It was not his goal but his goals in the 2013 All-Ireland Final that were crucial, a player for the big occasion, a truly class player.

You have probably worked out that the centre half forward spot goes to Trevor Giles. Hard luck to Ciaran McDonald, one of the most skilful players to grace a football field.

Our Hogan Stand team is:

1. Stephen Cluxton (Dublin)

2. Marc O'Sé (Kerry)
3. Darren Fay (Meath)
4. Tony Scullion (Derry)

5. Tomas O Sé (Kerry)
6. Seamus Moynihan (Kerry)
7. Martin O'Connell (Meath)

8. Daragh O'Sé (Kerry)
9. Jack O'Shea (Kerry)

10. Brian Dooher (Tyrone)
11. Trevor Giles (Meath)
12. Pat Spillane (Kerry)

13. Colm Cooper (Kerry)
14. Peter Canavan (Tyrone)
15. Maurice Fitzgerald (Kerry)

Well done to all.

Thanks to all of our posters for participating.

Have to say I think Connolly is a class act. Just seems to find that extra split second to get a score.

Stephen Cluxton will be remembered as the greatest goalkeeper of all time, and one of the greatest Gaelic footballers of all time when he decides to call it a day.

That's how good he is.

You can't throw that hoganstand team up as gospel. . .Darren fay for god sake - top class certainly but not even meath's best full back!

Notice how the team is ultra modern as yur modern GAA fan is completely media influenced. Media also decide the all star selections and, what do u know, they give Dublin (and Cluxton by extension) more coverage than anyone else.

Slayer has made some fair points which nobody has been able to disprove. Just people skirting the actual question and focusing on what slayer has already praised Clutton for.
