Visiting Yank for Galway vs Tipp Aug 16

For the record, will be wearing a white sweatshirt with bucky badger on the fron, "badgers" om the side of my pants. Keystroking on train from cork to cobh. Will try to get more info on hurling, since I'd like to have at least a "feel" for the game. Thanks for all the comments and help. To frugal to pay outlandish prices for internet on the ship, so I wait until we dock and then catch up. Cheers!

Anyone want channel island pounds? Only good on Guernsey. Cashier gave me 8 pounds change in Guersey pounds and I didn't notice. Absolutely useless and no one will excchange them and I don't blame them.

Change all plans for going to the pub on the morning and get into Croke Park early now with the Galway Minors (under 18's) playing Kilkenny in all Irland semi final at 12 (replay of drawn match last week). This game will give you a very good introduction to hurling and after it you'll be able to have a few pints in the stadium and walk around the back of the stands, gives a very good sense of and history of the GAA. You can also watch the other Minor match (Tipp v Dublin) if you are up to a 3rd match. Enjoy the day.

one final question. can I take a backpack into Croke Park for extraneous raingear or other stuff...or do they not allow. Thanks again, all.

jarvistjj - Yes you can. Thankfully the level of security witnessed at American sporting events has not reached our shores yet. I would not recommend being in Croke Park for the first minor game, it would be an awful long day in there. Walk around the area and have a pint (or more ;) in one of the many bars in the area.
Enjoy the game. Up Galway !

It's hurling he's going to watch so it won't be an awful long day there but I take your point if your used to watching Football in Croke Park.

onlyhurling - No need to be a hurling snob. You know exactly what I mean, especially for a tourist if would be a long day inside the stadium.

You might consider visiting the GAA museum which you can access via the Cusack stand side of the stadium. It's open every day and on match days stays open for an hour or so after gsmes. Well worth a visit if you want to learn a little of the history.

We're going to take in the pre match outside Croke and just experience the fun, but may go in for the last part of the junior match if they allow that. We will never be experts after one match, but maybe understand a little better as we go. Cheers and thanks again all.

God I hope jarvistjj is ok. It was a fair introduction to the game and it wasn't for the faint hearted.

Rumour has it he is still sitting in the Hogan bewildered at the outrageous excitement he has been missing all his life!

Galway's new no.1 mascot! May start a petition to get him back for the final lads!

I can only assume you are still on that big boat somewhere in the Mediterranean, lying back basking on the greatest sport you have ever witnessed.

Let us all know how you got on with your visit.

Where is jarvistjj? I have been looking forward all week to his considered analysis and still no word. Do you think he only got as far as a Dublin watering hole and is too ashamed to admit it? Perhaps he got hit with a hurling ball, doesn't know his own name and is wandering around Galway singing "the Fields of Athenry". Maybe he got back to the boat so anxious to share his adventures that he was locked in his internetless cabin for his own safety. Perhaps he was an American spy sent over to ascertain if hurling was a threat to world peace or maybe he's just a figment of our imagination. Any thoughts?

Folks, ye are sounding a little pathetic here, waiting on the judgement of a foreign visitor
on the match. Isn't this man on his holidays at the moment? Im sure he has better things to do on his hols than to log on here. If he ever gives us his opinion on it I'd imagine it will be when he is home and back to the grind.
