Straightforward one for Meath. The one and only Sean Boylan tops the list. Eamon O'Brien and Colm Coyle are next for making some progress, albeit very short lived.

1 Sean Boylan
2. Eamon O'Brien
3. Colm Coyle

Hard to argue with that. Back in the 50's I don't think there was a manager in the current mould as we know it. Players used to train themselves. I must look it up again on a book I have on the 50/51 team.

Also like to mention Mickey Moran, took over for the 2006 season with John Morrison and got us to a final, ok we got walloped by a great Kerry team but they were still shafted and got rid off that winter by our county board. By all accounts there training methods were well received.

1 - Donal Moloney....2 Munster minors and 3 u21 All-Irelands, plus another Munster final appearance on Thursday. Universally respected and liked, a rare combination.
2 - Gerry O'Connor....see above minus this year....
3 - Jim O'Hehir...father of commentator Micheal and trainer of the first Clare team to win the senior All-Ireland in 1914. The most recent Clare supremo to win the All-Ireland and not lose the plot in a web of conspiracy and self-importance afterwards. Also a rare combination.

Kerry posters : would love to know more about Dr. Eamonn ???

1914 : you don't have Ger Loughnane or Davy there ? Surely the former two Clare Liam McCarthy winners would make the top three . Is Ger Lough not a hero in your parts ?

You missed the tongue in cheek spect to my No. 3 selection! Yeah, Loughnane deserves huge credit, no argument there. The only issue there would be that too much credit was given to the manager and not enough to the players - a collection of driven and talented players. But that's a modern phenomenon across the board. Another argument is that Clare coukd have won another All-Ireland, maybe 2, and Loughnane was a negative factor in that respect - energy wasted on off-field activity. Many parallels to the current crew.

Down

1. Pete McGrath. This one is clear cut. Delivered in 1991 against Meath, 'the team that couldn't be beaten' and added another AI title in 1994 against the Dubs, also beating superb All-Ireland champions in Derry in the process. Made optimum use of an excellent group of players. His subsequent record with Ireland at International Rules level and Fermanagh this year shows his managerial pedigree beyond Down. Also came within a kick of a ball of winning the U-21 All-Ireland title with Down in 2009, and coached Down to a minor All-Ireland in the late 1980s. Would love to have him back at senior level.

2. Barney Carr. The manager during Down's glory years of the 1960s. There were other extremely influential figures behind the scenes with that Down team, including Maurice Hayes and Peter McDermott, but Carr was the official manager. This was a managerial setup which transformed Gaelic football. Three All-Irelands as manager.

3. This one is harder than the top two. Probably James McCartan purely because of the transformation he inspired in 2010, nearly winning a sixth All-Ireland title for Down. If we had been able to keep hold of the likes of Martin Clarke, then we might well have bounced back, but there was a gradual decline in the years that followed. Would be interested to hear other Down posters' views on our third best manager.

Lar foley Anthony Daly and Tommy Naughton.

Dale is obvious

Lar brought us out of the wilderness in the late 80s to have us in Leinster finals, should have won in 91 and if we had I'm sure we'd have won the all Ireland that year. We also had some super league runs in divison 1 under him.

Tommy doesn't get enough if any credit for bringing through a lot of the lads that Dalo built his team around. I've an awful lot of respect for Tommy.

100% agree. Tommy laid the foundations for Daly. A great hurling man who as you said doesnt get the credit he deserves. Played under him for the regional squads a few years back, great manager.
