Kerry v Kildare

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Kerry boys can yerra all they want, but deep down they know they're preparing for an AI final against whoever comes from the other side of the draw - personally I think it will be Mayo.

some unchecked optimism creeping in from Kildare fans. Kerry AI champs and have the footballer of the year, I suspect their forwards will score when they want against our backs. A Kildare win would be a massive shock.

Calm down Kildare/Dublin and other like minded posters you cant say Kildare have a very good chance to win this game as you'll be accused of being disingenuous and being away with the fairies. Not by me though.

Re the bookmakers odds Cork were 1/5 to win against Kildare, Dublin were 1/10 to beat Donegal while Donegal themselves were big favourites to win last years AI Final and none of which happened as we all know

We won't win. I think we are capable of troubling Kerry for 50 minutes of the game and staying with them but once they empty their bench and up it a gear we could be in trouble.

The Cork team we bet, a great result as it was, were deflated and mentally fragile and we were always going to be dangerous and cause them problems. Kerry will be a different prospect in Croker and I fear it's a step to far.

In saying the above it's been a great qualifier campaign and I am looking forward to next year, blooding our u21's in the league and seeing where that takes us.

You're right, switec. Even in a game Kildare dominated, Cork walked through our defence 7/8 times the other night

As someone who follows form, Donegal were 7/1 to win v dublin lqast year, and 8/11 to win the final v Kerry. It was a much more 2 horse race according to the bookies than the games you have listed. Big favorites with the media maybe, but you have got to be careful of who you listen to on the airwaves. The bookies do get it wrong however. Not very often, but sometimes the give out odds that are too generous to the underdog. I cant see kerry becoming undone in this game, provided they play to their full potential. That is the issue, and nothing else.

If kildare play out of thier skins and kerry do likewise, there will be only one winner. If kildare play a very good game, and kerry do what they need to do, they still will have enough. If kerry under-perform, and kildare play very well, kildare will win.

If I were to predict a score, kerry 2 14, kildare 1 10

I agree Donegalman I would expect Kerry to win if we play to top form but we haven't seen the form of the Mayo replay last year (that's mainly why I think Kildare have a very good chance of putting us out) since while Kildare who were beaten badly by the blue juggernaut have shown since particularly on Saturday they are a fine side. Also if the likes of Niall Kelly was available earlier they wouldn't have been relegated or beaten as badly as they were in Leinster.

I would also argue that kerry perform when they need to, not necessarily brilliantly, to get the job done. The mayo match last year was a perfect example of upping their game when needed. They didnt need to play brilliantly in the final, just tactically. I think that this year in the league kerry did what they needed to do, and so far in the championship, although it is difficult to read form from 2 fixtures, kerry showed little but enough to do the job.

Kildare have salvaged a season and are in bonus territory, but I dont think it is reasonable to expect them to beat the all irealnd champions in the next round.

Considering our disasterous league campaign to reach the All-Ireland quarter finals is a major achievement. The most I expect is a good performance against Kerry giving our young players more big game experience in preparation for next season.

A lot of people on here seem to seriously underestimate the respect Kerry have for fellow opponents. Kildare, Monaghan and Tyrone are all well capable of making the All-Ireland final. The last 6 champions have fallen short of the final. I'm not looking beyond Sunday. Down in '10 lingers in the memory and I fear Kildare are capable of the same.

Looking forward to testing our young guns against a great Kerry team, who are worth All Ireland Champions.

Nobody in Kildare expects us to win this game, but hopefully we can give a good account of ourselves.

I am delighted to see Kildare in a quarter final. and maybe it will quieten down the McGeeney worshippers once and for all.

On a plus side, the experience of playing against one of the top teams will benefit Kildare going forward.

Its actually hilarious some of the stuff being posted on here by the usual suspects.

The tired old claims that somehow Kerry, the All Ireland champions, are either an 'average', 'not a great', or 'limited' side.

Of course they are the same people who are also pronouncing a team that choked in a semi-final last year (and will get to the same stage again without any serious test from the other contenders) as the guaranteed All Ireland champions elect.

You'd have to wonder...

Ill fancy Kerry for this one but hope Kildare can do it. They gave a very good account of themselves last Saturday & thoroughly deserved the victory.

Kildare are hugely competitive at their own level and are not underachievers as most people think. They happen to play in the same province as a run away Dublin team. This creates an anomaly in their performance and in stats.

Six quarter final appearances from eight seasons are not the stats of serial losers. Most teams outside Kerry, Dublin, Mayo and Donegal would be more then happy with those results. Paddy powers odds are way over the top, Cork were 1/5 to win last Saturday and I remember Down in 2010 were a similar odds. Kerry are similiar level to Cork this year so Kildare should have no fear next weekend. If there is ever a time to beat Kerry its now and dont forget Kildare will realise that they will have a chance in the semi final whoever comes through between Monaghan and Tyrone. Imagine Kildare reaching the final then that would be some achievement.

This Kerry team barely got past Cork and we are still in a period of transition with players coming back from injury and younger players still being bedded into the Kerry setup. Dont be surprised to see a tight game on Sunday and I would have Kildare slight favorites to shade it considering their players are on top form and confidence levels must be hitting the roof considering the demolition job done on Cork.

The Cork win saved our year, no matter what happens from here on in we can always look back on that Saturday evening in Thurles with a sense of pride and delight. This Kildare is mentally tough and should get enormous credit for that, this is a team who came into the championship under the most pressure & negativity I can ever remember from a Kildare team in recent times, this is a team who also went away to a local rival and beat them on their home patch just 6 days after being humiliated on front of the whole country in Croke Park, where as we all know there is no hiding places. Kildare wont fear Kerry but will certainly respect them, they have a squad riddled with All-Ireland medals. If Kerry play to a high level that we all know they can reach then there will be only one winner, but this Kildare team have momentum and we know how strong that can be in football. Here's hoping for a strong performance with lots of character. It's great to be in the quarters again and with some optimism back in the county lets hope the lads can put in a strong showing.

Well put ShortGrass_1
The players and management deserve great credit for responding positively to all the criticism that was levelled at them. I know of one player who said that all the criticism did affect them but that the team have gradually regained confidence in themselves. Good article in the independent today by Colm Keys who spoke of Kildare having to cope with the Dublin loss and the six day turnaround before facing Offaly in Tullamore. He said that Kildare with the underage talent coming through are the best place team in Leinster to challenge Dublin in the next few years.

Lads, do you not think that all the criticism Kildare got on the back of the Dublin match, both within the county and outside was not perfectly justified?

I was at that game and a more pathetic performance from a senior inter-county team I don't think I have ever seen. They were a disgrace to their jersey and the proud GAA tradition of Kildare.

Fair play to them for turning things around but as a neutral, I would think Jason Ryan and his players had a lot to answer for for that performance against Dublin. Anyone in Kildare hiding behind some myth that the current Dublin team are the greatest side of all time that would do that to any county, needs their head examined.

It's an interesting pairing and hopefully will be a good game of football. Kildare are running up a nice bit of momentum from the qualifiers so should be in a good place with high morale. Although they've been in this position before with McGeeney. I think Kildare will stick with Kerry for three quarters of the game and Kerry to pull away a bit towards the end. Kerry by 6.

You would have to fancy Kerry BUT the question is what state are Kerry in at the moment? They barely got by Cork in Munster. Kildare beat Cork out the gate a week later. I'm not so convinced with Paddy Powers odds of Kerry being 1/7 to win on Sunday.

Kerry are a different team though when they get to Croke Park.

Don't be surprised if this one ends up being a draw (14/1)

Were Kerry lucky to win the All- Ireland last year? Well you could hardly say that luck won them an All Ireland but you might say they were lucky to get the referee they had in Limerick who should of black carded Donnacha Walsh and sent off Enright for the penalty foul, it was a second yellow or black card, but he should have gone, then there was some handy frees that kept brought them back into it when they needed them. Also in a strange way Donegal's triumph was totally to Kerry's advantage, the Dubs were gone after walloping Monaghan by 20 points in the quarters they would surely have beaten Kerry had Donegal not taken them out.
The thing about Kerry is they are always good enough to take advantage of any luck that comes their way and if Mayo were to upset the Dubs in this years semi there's a good chance Kerry could have two in a row. Is that why Brolly was so annoyed at the penalty decision in Killarney, Kerry and not Cork would be playing the best from Ulster?

Back to the game on Sunday, as has been said not many in Kildare would be expecting us to win but at least we have shown that there are some decent footballers coming through and there's a couple of them still there who will be playing their 5th or 6th All Ireland Quarter final. Lets hope it wont be anything like what happened with the Dubs and it will be a decent game with plenty of what is good about football to discuss.
