Dublin v Waterford

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

sundays quarter final between the 2 is the first championship meeting since 1948 when they met in the all Ireland final.

Thought that was worth a mention. Especially as with the qualifier system in place the last few years we still never got drawn together so it's a real novel pairing. Looking forward to it

Gas...

You'd think we may have bumped into each other a wee bit more than that!

Very difficult game ahead for Dublin

Have to find our best performance of the year to stand any chance

We need to find a good start.. GC needs to get things right from the start

We were woeful against Limerick and a bit all over until we went to a more orthodox setup

Then our forwards started to win some ball

We know that Waterford setup defensively so it should be a fascinating contest

Hate to say it... but I'd be surprised to see Dublin win

Just don't see the performance required

But hope I'm wrong... It would be great to reach another semi-final

50/50

Dublin were very physical v Limerick and we had no answer to a lot of their play. That little bit of ferocity they've picked up over the years from playing Kilkenny is standing to them and they will need to slow Waterford down at every opportunity.

I'd just about nudge towards Waterford as I think they have greater scoring power but any result would be no surprise.

I thought Dublin should have beaten Galway the first day but since then they have been on an awful downward spiral. Lost the replay heavily , didn't put Laois away with any considerable conviction and then against Limerick they struggled for ages and when they got on top they pushed on.
Paul Ryan is the key man and if they play him in the correct position he could do damage as he can score from out the field.
Waterford wont change their system which will probably suit Dublin as they will have a game plan and probably a B plan if things are not going well.
I do kind of fancy the Dubs to nick it but with Waterford you just never know. They have been the team of the year so far so how will they react to that first defeat.

Waterford have to be favourites but getting over Limerick will be a big help to the Dubs. They just need to find that spark, if they don't then it's going to be Waterford's day.

Slightly off the topic but why has Humphrey Kelleher suddenly seen fit to thrash the current management? There have been 2 articles on hoganstand recently reporting his displeasure with the current set-up. Dublin had fallen short so something had to change. The Carton thing was unfortunate but he should have sucked it up (in my opinion). Not good going into a big game with that sort of sniping going on.

I was very disappointed with U 21 result. Felt this was best chance for Silverware, I hope we bounce back v Dublin, I think Rushe at centre half and I think on their day have super forwards, I believe our backs are strong but we depend on all forwards to work really hard and be alot more efficient in their shooting. Again hard to call, like most days all on the day, The Cork Galway is similar, Like all others waiting for championship to kick off

A day before the match and this thread is on the second page! Very little interest in this match it looks like.

Anyway absolutely cant wait for this match, hoping Dublin can win but not expecting.

Key for us is to start well,if we go behind by 8 pts early on like we did against Limerick its game over. This Waterford side wont let us back into the game.

Our big players need to step up tomorrow. Keaney and Sutcliffe have been going missing all year but if they can find form in this match we have a great chance, two very important players to us.

Interesting also to note we've beaten Waterford the last 3 times we've played them so Dublin ceratinly wont fear them.

Heart says Dublin, Head says Waterford.

I suppose the feeling is that even thought this is an AI Quarter final, the winners dont have much of a chance after that. However if Dublin can get their act together Im sure a win here could really set them up. Surely there is one big game in Dublin. If think there is and tip them to win.

Waterford to win I'm afraid. They have better hurlers than the dubs.

Waterford are firm favourites coming in to this game after having a great run through the League before gaining promotion and eventually winning it outright. Then they knocked Cork out of the Munster championship before giving Tipp a run for their money in the Munster final, so they are rightly the hottest of favourites to advance to the All Ireland semi finals.

Hope I'm wrong but its Waterford to win this one for me unless Dubs can lift it 20% here.

I think this is difficult to call. Waterford are an excellent defensive side but not overly flashy. The dubs are physically strong. neither are beautiful hurlers. I'd have a slight fancy for Waterford but it could go either way.

Dublin will need to improve big time if they are to have any chance.
If they play at same level as in Limerick game they will be out of it at half time.
Big performance needed today from all 15 on field.

For me - as Dublin have beaten Limerick they have gotten a monkey off their back and this should allow them to play with more fluency and I think this will bring them through the match and on to Croke Park.
The Waterford first touch is exceptional and their teamwork is also top class but their pulling back so many players might limit their opportunities for scores and I feel this will militate against a win! The Dubs are physically strong and this will have an impact as well.

Lets see how much the referee lets go as well.

Apparently Dublin beat Waterford in three challenge matches over the past three months. Wouldn't have given the Dubs much hope of winning today until I heard this. Now unless Waterford abandoned their defensive system in all three matches then Dublin must have some method of counteracting that system. Waterford may regret having those challenges!

Defiantly wasn't a 65 that was given in 29th minute.
Umpires 2 yards away and makes the wrong call. Not good enough.
65 scored.

Thuggish, disgraceful act there from Liam Rushe. Smashing a fella with a hurl in the face.

And of course hurling people, like Brendan Cummins in the commentary box there, will give it the usual cobblers about frustration, Its a terrible thing to do, no excuses.

He should have been sent off earlier in the game for deliberately hitting a waterford player in the stomach with his hurl.

Well done Waterford! It'll be interesting to see what challenge they put up to Kilkenny.

Yes,very poor form from Rushe. He should have received his marching orders earlier. No excuses. He had a desperate game also.Twice pulled up for over carrying and dispossessed for Waterfords first goal.
