@4KHDoneill - We probably will. But sore losers like yourself just make today's win all the sweeter.

Its a great win for Galway and we can improve alot. I agree the ref was kind to us. but we are usually the ones hard done. The standards of refereing needs to improve. Its not just this ref, They are generally all the same, espically in the hurling.

A video judge is needed to contact the ref if he is unsure on something important. I do understand a referee has a very difficult task and its a no win situation for them. Its very seldom a ref gets praised on having a good performance.

No sir the better team won but I still get a knot in my stomach when I think of that late goal in 2001

I hear that Brian McIver has stepped down, unhappy with the referee.

Justified or toys out of the pram?

I was there that day in 2001 and that goal by Mattie Clancy was crucial.

I can definitely see why Brian McIvor is frustrated, the ref gave some ridiculously soft frees. But it wasn't the ref that had Derry play so negatively throughout that game. Galway are fairly poor, the game was there for the taking if Derry committed more players to attack

Muckross. "toys out of the pram'. Possibly, but your wording is harsh.
It must be extremely difficult watching months and months of hard work be undone by what you see as incompetent officiating.

he has good reason to be annoyed with the ref but even if he is livid about the whole thing, now isn't the time to make a big decision like that. Maybe he saw the writing on the wall and decided to save face but the big question for Derry is where from here?

@Muckross - it's very easy for McIver to be blaming the ref - soft frees were given both ways. No team can realistically expect to win if they don't score for 20 minutes in the first half and 30 minutes in the second half. I really didn't think we'd win today but we won that game far more comfortably than the one against Armagh.

Galway win good for football. It is sad to see a great football county like Derry play this terrible brand of football.

I'm totally neutral and couldn't care which of these two teams won or lost. But I'm fair glad that that muck, and that's what it was, served up by Derry has no further place in the championship; no ideas going forward, no creativity. And for the record the ref, in my eyes, got a lot of calls wrong (black card was sinful), but he got the penalty call spot on. Not a hope in hell was that a penalty.

Few points. Black card seemed harsh, but if Derry can't learn from the first time mouthing, shame on them. Also 30 minutes wuithout scoring in the second half with a Gale force wind says how limited they are. It was not a penalty. The posters here complaining about refs have never picked up a whistle. Unless the tools available to refs increase like video technology, you'll have the same SO CALLED sub standard performance. I thought the ref was not a major factor in the result if one was to properly analyse it in five minutes. Good teams find a way to deal with the odd decision against them. I find it funny that McIver says how the standard of everything in the GAA improved in the last 20 years yet the Derry skill level was shocking. My point is proven by the fact that eoin Bradley can come back four weeks before the championship and starts every game.

If that was the case than Fitzer should of done the same with Louth after the Leinster final farce in 2010.

Galway fans can go on all they like about us not scoring for long periods but it was injury time in the first half before Galway scored from play. The ref kept Galway in it. 7 points from frees in first half, Derry blown up for over carrying 3 times I think in first half, black card that wasn't. Derry should have been going in ahead at half time ahead playing with the wind in the second half. The ref changed the game. Im sure I seen O 'Boyle being pushed for the penalty call. The ref had gave Galway frees for less all day. That was a 6 point decision that ended the match. Any game plan we had was maderedundant by the ref.

Then there was the booing of Derry when Galway had 15 men behind the ball. The booing of our keeper when tying his boots, the cheering of wides and the fella in front of me shouting something about northern b's after Galway scored their goal left me leaving with a very bitter taste in my mouth.

We will definitely have to do something about fans booing other teams, cant allow that
Also we need a ref that can kick the ball over the bar for teams like Derry

James joyce unfortunately their is ignorance everywhere. We got it from their fans when they beat our hurlers a couple of weeks ago, we were called wbrits and what would we know about hurling , ye couldnt make it up. Although we have some beauts too in croker at times.
But on the football who do you see coming in now as manager , are ye happy to perservere with the blanket defence .Is that your only option if you are to eventually have any chance of winning Ulster.

I live in England and have become very used to these comments about Northern Counties from the rest of GAA supporting counties. Don't be worrying about it, I think every country have geographical rivalies. I have to agree I thought Derry started very well, went 3 up, Galway looked clueless, all of a sudden 6 soft frees later Derry are 3 down. It was baffling to say the least. I felt sorry for Derry and I think everybody who watched the game seen how lucky Galway were. People talk about Galway winning being good for the Championship lol. They are certainly not a great Galway team, I remember watching some fantastic players from that county going back many a year. This team will certainly not entertain anybody in Croke Park. They will draw Sligo but a provincial winner will beat them comfortably.

James Joyce not nice to hear that but very much a minority I would think. Everything yesterday was ruined by the conditions. Ath Cliath there is ignorance in every county unfortunately none more so than some of your own fans. Admittedly I have only experienced it from a minority of your football fans.
