So we should pay a foreign company to watch our national games so they can make money, might as well fly their flag over all our GAA grounds, thank God I didn't buy into that rubbish

There is zero chance that Sky would only broadcast GAA outside Ireland and the UK where they cannot sell Sky TV and/or broadband packages. It gives them an in to a market of GAA and possibly new GAA fans accross the water to sell Sky deals. Revenue from advertisements around these games are also important to them but more important to TV3 or RTE. Maybe now that UPC have bought TV3 they'll try getting some games back as it might benefit them in the TV/broadband package business.
All of them broadcast with an eye towards the size of the target audience and the age range and potential benefit to their advertisers. Tyrone v Meath looks a right game for us on Hogan but we represent a small number in viewing figures. We might spend a few quid after seeing an Elvery's ad at halftime but RTE could get more money from Condor Cruise holiday ads from an older audience being mind-numbed by Winning Streak.
Its actually less than zero of a chance Sky would broadcast only outside Ireland. Fair point on UPC. Will be interesting to see what happens there

We shouldn't have to limit ourselves to irish companies. You're buying into your own brand of rubbish. People shouldn't have to limit themselves to any company covering the GAA.

Riverboys, that is the sort of comment that makes me cringe with embarrassment.

Have we not still reached the point where we can debate an issue without resorting to the "foreign company" nonsense.

We have no God given right to see every game that's on & there are always options, go to the bloody game or listen to the radio, which I enjoy hugely.

The hurling qualifiers this weekend deserve top billing considering the quality of the games that are on. There'll be plenty of football on TV next weekend. 2 football qualifiers, the Munster Final replay, the Ulster Final and Connacht Final.

There is too much of this attitude in GAA - football bending the knee to the great and generous god that is hurling. Last week the Munster final had to serve as TV hors d'oeuvre to what was effective the Connacht championship coronation in hurling; this weekend no football but all hurling matches on live and next week 3 showpiece football finals shoehorned into the same weekend to make room in the calendar for hurling. In fact, all but 5 of the 22 Munster (all 4 matches live on RTE), Leinster and All-Ireland championship matches have been broadcast live. One of 18 football qualifiers have been shown live. RTE has shown 5 out of 17 Munster and Leinster championship matches in football; 8 out of 11 for the same in hurling.

The weekend of the 18th will be wall to wall football so people will get their fill then. Sky showing round 3b games at 3 and 5, then Rte have kerry cork at 7. Sunday ulster and connaught finals.

do you not think RTE will get more viewers for top class hurling than for football qualifier games ?

The fact Dublin are playing should guarantee the audience for sure but none of the four teams in action this weekend in the hurling qualifiers are top class.

What difference does it make? If your own county is playing you will be at the game so it doesnt matter what is on TV. And if your county isnt involved well its a Saturday in the middle of summer, you should be down at your club giving a hand, I'm sure every club will have plenty on, nothing beats helping out your club.

Despite murdoch's involvement in western media propaganda and all the known lies that was spewed out on all his media outlets prior to the invasion of Afghanistan, Iraq and the consequential war on terror, i still find his extortionate monopoly of world wide sport channels quite entertaining. :o

You think Dublin are a top class hurling side but Clare, Cork and Limerick aren't ?

No - that's why I said - "one of the four teams in action this weekend in the hurling qualifiers are top class".

The point stands that hurling gets far greater exposure on television than football.

Apologies, read that wrong. I think they get more viewers for the hurling from neutral counties at this stage of the championships so it's more viable in terms of advertising revenue. I think this based on my very scientific opinion that if Mayo aren't on the Telly I'd rather watch live hurling than football.

This weekend RTE is showing the Limerick/Dublin match on Saturday, and on Sunday they have Dublin/Westmeath followed by Tipperary/Waterford
