Leinster hurling final should have been in Thurles

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Croker is the place of our Leinster finals - full stop.
What do you do with minors?

They traditionally play before the senior final?
They are tomorrows players. They all deserve to play in our top stadium.
The other suggested stadia are not big enough.

Its only a few hours journey nowadays from Galway or Kilkenny to Croke Park.

Looked like a good crowd there yesterday and they got a good game on our top pitch.

Jack I can assure you they would have struggled to get 33k if that match yesterday was in Thurles. I was surprised more than 30k were at it. We obviously thought we had a chance.

Marlon JD made the best post. Don't move it. Fill the ground somehow. Why not play one of the qualifiers there or something?

Portlaoise wouldn't be able for crowds they were under severe pressure a couple of years ago when Kilkenny played Dublin all these stadiums in leinster are of the one size around 20000 I suppose with croke park there no need to go any bigger. Thurles has a lovely pitch but in regards the town it has nothing a lot of Waterford, Wexford supporters stop in Kilkenny when they are going home.

The pitch in Thurles is the best but Thurles town has nothing for people going to matchs regarding services, it was a pity in leinster that some County didn't develop a bigger stadium I wonder was it to do with the development of croke park they are all around eighteen to twenty thousand seaters facilaties in towns like Tullamore, Carlow, portlaoise, Kilkenny, are good for food pubs etc not like thurles I see it a lot where Waterford, Wexford, stop in Kilkenny .

Yeah imagine the absurdity of playing a Provincial final in another Province. Oh wait, weren't the 2004, 2005 and 2006 Ulster Football Finals played in Croke Park (and the 2005 Semi).

So thats that. I didnt realise Tullamore and Maryborough were both under 20,000. Thats put the tin hat on that. If Galway get the Home and away arrangement for next year then there could be a leinster final in Pearse Stadium. That would be novel.

Tullamore only has 3 sides. No terrace behind one of the goals which ruins it. Why don't they finsih it?

I'm sure the original poster has a valid but the thought of a Galway Vs Antrim Leinster final in Thurles is hilarious!

You can't beat the atmosphere of a Leinster final in Croker...

Mayo hurler, apart from when Killkenny lose the final, like against dublin in 2013 and Cork 2012 you most certainly can. Wexford in 2004 probably the last one before that.

I've been to most of them so I would know.

A big issue certain posters seem to bring up is the whole notion of why would you play a leinster final in munster.

Well for starters you have a team from munster, connaught and ulster competing in it but more importantly you had a few ulster finals played in leinster before. So its obviously reasonable.

But the real reason is because thurles is between the two counties and it would be a great novelty plus you'd have an electric atmosphere.

Croker is also Killkennys second home and I believe they don't play as well when they're outside of it or nowlan Park.

After flying over from England for the game and only 35k or so at it, it makes you wonder where all the other 50k appear from in September! Yet I know ill be struggling to get a ticket should our seniors and or minors make it!
