One of the worst decisions ever

That Meath goal in 2010 was the worst decision ever.

If a hurling umpire is standing near his post and a shot comes in at pace heading towards him what is the first thing he will do..... blink.....turn his head.... take evasive action.... all 3 - thats what happened yesterday and nobody from WM seemed to argue that it was wide which was amazing if it was wide.... not a word to the umpire or Referee, the manager never mentioned it in his post match interview and no reporter asked anyone any question about the incident until the TV last night. Amazing

Awful call alright . There's human error and then there is negligence at it's extreme . It's obvious that these umpires are not watching the play . What happened Louth was so wrong also !

Don't forget the Hawkeye debacle in 2013. We got a point and Hawkeye said it was wide. Nothing in the GAA works!!

not saying this happened in the westmeath v limerick match but I see alot of times that keepers fill the back of their nets with all sorts of hurleys, balls etc. I have seen once a sliothar hit the side netting and hit a ball that was inside the net and moving it. it looked like the actual playing sliothar had hit the back of the net rather than the one that was already in there. Are there any rules governing what can and cannot be allowed in the back of the net during a game.

I often wondered what would have happened in 2010 if the Joe Throw had happened at the Hill 16 end against Dublin with Meath 2 points down in the 71st minute.

Kikfada he would of turned around and said that his goal was legal and he was pushed over the line and if it was not a goal well then it was a penalty.

Just seen 2 different clips from both sides of the field that clearly show that the call by the umpire and referee was 100% correct. In fact it was a brilliant call by both as the ball was moving so fast and hopped back out so quick. Again the keyboard warriors don't care about the truth as it gets in the way of a good story. On the Sunday game the camera man who filmed it, the commentator who spoke on it, the editor who badly edited it and the presentor and analyst who spoke that night on it are all paid professionals. The only unpaid people involved were the umpire & ref. Yet they are the only ones who got the call correct. Serious kudos to them. Shame on the others & those making ridiculous comments on this page

That ball was wide. Narrowly, and hit with force, yes. But still wide. The umpire was asleep at the wheel.

That was a dreadful mistake, no excuse for it. I know mistakes can happen, and the criticism of officiating in our games is often unwarranted, and over the top. Hurling is a fast game, things will slip through the net (pun not intended). But this wasn't an understandable mistake, this was negligence. The umpire is standing right at the post, watching the ball (its really the only thing they have to do). The ball moving fast is not an excuse, its hurling, the ball always move fast. The players put too much into this, they sacrifice too much, and they take it too seriously, for the assignment of umpires not to be taken seriously. Too many passengers working as umpires, it needs to be addressed.

It has happened to Tipp twice. Gerry Murphy for Kerry in 1997 and Pat Fox v Cork in 1987. In the latter case the ball did go into the net but hit the back post so fast that flew back out again and everybody missed it.

Sorry now but I'm not very tech savvy to be putting up links but I'll tell ye where to find them. 1st one is on sportsjoe.ie which is taken from terrace side & slows down & highlights ball going inside post. 2nd & much better & clearer clip is on the Irish examiner website & from stand side. It clearly shows sliotar going at least a foot inside the post. In fact it's closer to the goalies leg than the post. Quite conclusive & definite I would say. It'll be interesting to see if the paid professionals man up & admit their mistake. As for the warriors, I expect nothing less than they continue to hide behind their keyboards ....

Quote from michal ryan (article on this website) - very dignified and sporting response - "Mistakes will always be made. Managers make mistakes, players make them and referees make them. In fairness, the referee had an excellent game and there's nobody more disappointed than the umpire himself and the referee because everybody strives to be as good as they can be. But it's tough enough to take.

This article in todays Examiner is well worth a read. Well done to all officials concerned on getting their decision spot on. Can't wait for the apology on The Sunday Game this week.
