In fairness it was an absolutely fantastic goal. The best of the year so far at senior level. It's difficult to execute a move like that with the pace and pressure of the senior game. for me it typified what Joe is all about. He didn't even need to look, he knew where the goal was and to just let fly. It was a real pure bred hurlers goal. Doylerwex (Wexford) - Posts: 3048 - 06/07/2015 11:14:49 1748200 Link 0 |

Yeah great goal. But funny, last Wednesday night I was watching our clubs senior hurlers playing and one of our players scored a simlilar but better (in my opinion) goal. Long ball played forward coming over his head, he goes up with two of the opposition, fields it and starts the rotation in the air, feet have hardly touched the ground when he is now facing the goal, 30 metres+ out and puts it in the postage stamp corner of the net like a rocket. Pity RTEs cameras weren't there though and all he got was a few car horns beeping. Offside_Rule (Antrim) - Posts: 4058 - 06/07/2015 11:33:46 1748242 Link 0 |
Id agree waynoI. While is was an impressive goal, it is being over-played, probably because it was scored by canning. If it was glynn for instance, would there be the furore? It was a high ball in and the defence got caught under it. He simply caught it unchallenged, kept going forward and drove it at goal. You see many defenders claim a high ball while retreating like that, but they will just sell a dummy and drive it out the field again. Had we won I would be celebrating that goal but TheMaster's post is closer to reality. westisthebest (Galway) - Posts: 444 - 06/07/2015 12:15:51 1748301 Link 0 |
Absolutely offside rule.I have seen plenty goals of a similiar nature down through the years. Some in club games. Our Cavan and Kildare posters here seem to have lost the run of themselves.Id say Joe does this regularly in training and for his club.He scored a great goal in Leinster final few years back.Catching over Jackie Tyrell and burying to net. cuederocket (Dublin) - Posts: 5084 - 06/07/2015 12:18:51 1748305 Link 0 |
Ah come on Waynol it as a fantastic goal regardless of who scored it.Watching it again on TV you just don't appreciate the speed at which it was executed.A goal that will remain in the memory long after most of the game is forgotten. It was a great goal in fairness. If it was easy to do we would see goals like that all the time but we don't. To catch the ball out of sky while facing away from goal, spin and shoot accurately all in practically one fluent motion is not easy no matter what some say. Dont think theres anyone saying it wasnt a great goal, but each year we are treated to numerous great goals.Of all different varieties. This was just another one.And no doubt there will be a lot more this year. cuederocket (Dublin) - Posts: 5084 - 06/07/2015 15:15:36 1748559 Link 0 |
It's all about silverware. No one remembers who comes second, from the Mayo footballers to the Buffalo Bills. No one remembers Matt Le Tissier for scoring great goals, or for not winning anything, apart from the people who do remember his great goals collection. Who would posters prefer on their team?Joe Canning,Richie Hogan or TJ Reid?Personnally id choose the 2 Kilkenny men before Joe. cuederocket (Dublin) - Posts: 5084 - 06/07/2015 15:28:21 1748585 Link 0 |
I'd certainly take the two KK fellas, we have Joe on our side already. Pope_Benedict (Galway) - Posts: 3831 - 06/07/2015 15:31:47 1748592 Link 0 |
Which do you think are the better players out of them pope? cuederocket (Dublin) - Posts: 5084 - 06/07/2015 15:37:51 1748603 Link 0 |
The catch, turn and foresight to do what he did was top class.. as good as you'll see jimbodub (Dublin) - Posts: 20681 - 06/07/2015 15:47:28 1748620 Link 0 |
I agree with the OP. I don't think it was as good as everyone is saying. Richie Power pulled of a similar catch in last years drawn final and buried it from the 21. deadybai (Kilkenny) - Posts: 63 - 06/07/2015 15:50:09 1748627 Link 0 |
Great goal, simple as that. GAAHattrick (Dublin) - Posts: 278 - 06/07/2015 15:50:44 1748628 Link 0 |
A hard question to answer. How would Joe do up front for Kilkenny? How would TJ Reid do in the Galway team. The quality of your teammates is a big factor in the success or failure of any intercounty player. Marooned (Galway) - Posts: 2264 - 06/07/2015 15:52:32 1748629 Link 0 |
It amuses me sometimes when people criticise Canning, how they're not happy if he hasn't scored 2-10! He scored 1-1 on Sunday and was fouled for two more points, that's a contribution of 1-3 which is good. 1914 (Clare) - Posts: 92 - 06/07/2015 16:03:06 1748644 Link 0 |
Yes marooned,a valid observation. However, for me personally,Joes workrate is not at the same standard or intensity of the Kilkenny players.Or a lot of the greats down the years.Skillwise,he has few equal.I never really see that savage intensity in Joes game.I dont think its part of his make up,and its not going to change now. cuederocket (Dublin) - Posts: 5084 - 06/07/2015 16:12:57 1748655 Link 0 |
