squareball_1988 thats right. brolly got a goal in that game. I still think we had the beating of Galway that year and could have gone on to win the final. Very disapointed. Our biggest misssed chance (more so than 58 i reckon)

Id agree with that comment ; that Derry team underachieved big time , had a very good side and were so strong physically.

The Da was bringing me to Croker on and off during the 70s as a nipper and I only have hazy memories of games in Leinster against Meath but don't think I was brought to the AI series at all. My first vivid memory is the LSFC final of 1980, John O'Leary made his debut and we were beaten by a great Offaly team. That is my first real strong memory and I've been hooked ever since. I think I might even have one of those crappy tissue hats that they sold outside the ground back then, with a cardboard white peak stapled on saying Ath Cliath, in a shoe box somewhere.

On my local GAA pitch, was the 1st time I played for the senior team and the 1st ball that came my way was perfect, ball ran towards me on the ground, no opponent anyway near me, all I had to do way pick up the ball turn around and head for goal. Fine but what I didn't see was an opponent on my blind side along the sideline and he gave my a wallop of a shoulder that put me on my arse but I held onto the ball, bad mistake, he tried to drag the ball off me, still no free and with the help of 2 of his teammates who gave me a knee in the ribs and a belt or 2 in the puss I held onto the ball, still a bad mistake (still no free). My teammates decided eventually to jump in and help and a melee happened, it lasted a few mins with everyone throwing shapes and blood everywhere (you'd swear it was a slaughter house you were in). When everything eventually quietened down the ref decided to take action, he called 4 lads aside 2 from each team and gave yellows cards to 2 lads 1 from each team, the other 2 players myself with more blood on me than you would see in a blood clinic, and an opponent got straight reds. Twas the 1st game I played, the 1st ball I got, the 1st belt I got, the 1st debate I got into and the 1st red card. After the game the manager said to me that there is no point playing you in the forwards, centre half back no 6 is the best spot, with the amount of blood spilt today everybody will be afraid to go near you. That was my 1st time.
Sorry only read the full title debate just now, feel like a right eejet writing that

Hahaha no worries. I very much enjoyed reading it. Quite a few milestones there in a few short minutes

Dublin vs Roscommon in the league, think it was 76.(back when the league started a couple of weeks after the All Ireland) Dublin had just won Sam and I pestered my dad to bring us to see a game. I'll never forget the thrill of sitting in the old Cusack looking at lads that I'd seen playing on the telly a few weeks earlier. that and watching the 'head cases' as my father called them hopping about on the hill stuck with me, and nearly 40 years later I still get to every match possible, whether its O'Byrne cup or an All Ireland final.... hooked for life..

1982 Leinster final, Offaly v Dublin. I still remember my first glimpse of the Croke Park pitch for the first time as I walked up the steps into the Hogan Stand. Dublin were well beaten on the day by a great Offaly side, remember our minors winning the leinster title beforehand on their way to an All Ireland win in 82.

Can't remember my first Mayo match attended but I've always told people if you are heading to Croke Park for the 1st time take your time, have a good look around the area outside the grounds and know where you are, if you get lost head for such a spot like Quinns and wait outside, we'll all meet up there. Then the most important bit you enter the grounds and climb the steps and when you reach the entrance to the stand at the top stop and take a good long look around Croke Park, the size of the venue is awesome, it's a sight you will never forget especially with 82000 fans inside with different colour jerseys and flags, makes you proud and delighted to be there

Derry v Roscommon league semi final in April 2000 or else it was Derry v Cavan 1999 in Casement Park when Brolly equalised in the last minute.
Derry v Antrim 2000 is the first game I remember clearly.

However I also would have seen training sessions in 1993 as a toddler and the players brought the Sam Maguire to the club too
