Why "bad" teams never win

The skill levels between football and hurling are different but it is harder to compete at hurling. You could set up in football to make a game of it at most levels but in hurling the skill level, pace, touch, scoring ability at the top is vast. In hurling if more resources were devoted to teams such as Antrim, Down, Laois, Meath, Kerry, Derry then there maybe a chance of one or two stepping up.

I think the GAA need to look a little deeper at hurling across the Country, and dedicated resources is definitely one part of that. However throwing money is not going to solve anything, without a deeper study of why the game has been reduced to a Two Province Championship.

Football on the other hand is going from strength to strength, with 3 very competitive Provincial Championships that are getting more competitive. And Leinster where Dubin are way ahead of the rest, but a few teams still have the potential of closing the gap.

Clearly the only reason Laois were so bad agin Galway was because Dublin hasn't been split up yet, ditto Wexford agin Limerick last year.

Kilkenny take their goals and wexford miss theirs. Just as I type a complete fumble in open space gifts the ball back to Kilkenny.

Wexford could be so good if they got the basics and their heads right.

Infuriating as a neutral who wants the cats bet!

100 pc agree - Mcgeeney made the point last week that Armagh had as many attempts at scores as Donegal
To someone with his knowledge of the game its a nonsense statistic. Armagh were hitting hail Mary's from outside the 45 because they had no way to get inside -
A wide from there is not the same as a "scoring chance ".

I suppose when you consider how much effort goes into prepping a team like Armagh, McGeeney will highlight whatever positives he can after that kinda of hammering.

But I suppose it really does highlight how statistics can be tailored to suit certain arguments, and fail to capture the overall picture of a game.

The only statistic that matters is the scoreboard on the final whistle. Doesn't matter how skilful your players are, putting the ball over the bar or in the back if the net when it counts is what separates good teams from bad, believe me ! The "sure we were brilliant for 60 minutes" argument when you lose to a last minute of injury time 45 because if complacently defending a lead, is delusional. It's not learning from mistakes and telling yourself that you were good enough to compete with the best when, in fact, a 1 point loss due to mental frailty is as as bad as a 10 point one.

Skills are very important, but more important when they're executed at the crucial moments in games. Mental strength, teamwork, following the game plan and having the ability to change the game plan mid-game are just as important.

today summed up exactly what I said yesterday. . . oh what might have been if we'd taken our chances early. . . . .we are so mentally weak though. 2 quickfire goals and we panicked and just got worse

And Limerick today again. I'm not gonna get into them gifting the first two goals and other pathetic things like going for goals from frees .

But I'll highlight a second half moment . Limerick back in the game, tipp on the ropes and their #13 gets a simple chance for the equaliser . Rush of blood , smacks it hard and left.

This kind of thing happens so much. hopefully Waterford unlike Limerick keep their heads grounded and don't let their minds drift off to cloud cookoo land . Limerick at their best can catch tipp out by a point or two . Then start thinking they've got a real chance they get hammered . They'll never learn .

Waterford doing their best to fit in to this category.

They've more wides and balls dropped short then scores. It sickens me to see the likes of Killkenny and tipperary win so much simply because the opposition at times can be pathetic when it comes to shooting accuracy.

It really makes me dillusional with the whole thing. So boring with the same teams winning all the time.

This is how 3 in a rows etc begin . The likes of tipp win today winning poorly then next year and the year after they actually play well and all of a sudden a damaging domination patch has occurred to a province .

Dublin, Limerick , Waterford , Galway , clare and Wexford all the same . Gifting tipp and Killkenny titles because they can't do the most basic thing . Convert very storable chances.

How can you be neutral if you want one side to lose?
