Down - True Ulster dark horses?

How can anyone credible say Donegal or Monaghan are Dark Horses to win Ulster?.

You couldn't say Monaghan or Donegal are racing certainties....
Donegal could easily exit the next day.
Not beyond the bounds of possibility that Monaghan could lose to Fermanagh - providing Fermanagh get that far.

no not beyond the bounds we would lose to Fermanagh but highly unlikely. Been a long time since Monaghan lost a match to a lower ranked team very consistent in that regard over past few years under O'Rourke although have not played anywhere near their full potential since winning that Ulster title in 2013.

Their was a good remark on twitter by Con Murphy (i think) a few weeks ago.
he talked his father out of putting a bet on Rory to win a tournament in the US a few weeks ago as his odds were like 2/1 and made his father put an each way bet on a longer shot.
Well Rory won the tournamnet and the longshot came no where....so a short odd win is better than a longshot loss....

In the same way I wouldnt go putting my weeks wages on Down to win Ulster!

To be fully honest I wouldn't see Down or Derry are a major threat.

Going in against Tyrone a loss would have surprised me.
Now we have Armagh where I think we should win but if we lost it wouldn't be a massive shock.
If Donegal get to the Semi I would be shocked if they are beaten by Down or Derry - Not impossible but it would be a massive shock.

in the same way I always felt that Cavan may be a potential banana skin to Monaghan but I wouldn't think Antrim or Fermanagh will challenge them.

Now the question marks are what if Armagh up their game and beats Donegal. Could Down beat Armagh? This I would have to decide depending on how both teams would have played till then.

Anyway my money is on Derry to beat Down so no I don't think they will win Ulster.

A very low key build up to the match here in the Mourne county. There isn't much hype surrounding this Down team, mainly due to the large swathes of inexperience throughout the ranks. We were promoted out of a fairly mediocre division two. Roscommon are a quality side, while Meath, Galway and Cavan will be competitive this championship.

As for winning the Ulster championship, neither Derry or Down will challenge for this honour. We have a great championship up here, but I believe there will be no surprises this year with Monaghan and Donegal once more competing in the Ulster final. I hope I'm wrong!

Down are far too small in key areas of the field. This will be highlighted in championship football and it wouldn't surprise me if we exited the championship early in the qualifiers. I'm not a pessimist, but a realist. However, I expect each and every man wearing the red and black to fight tooth and nail, and hopefully with a little bit of luck, along with the resilience we showed in throughout the league, it will be a longer summer for us than I am anticipating.

A bad Tyrone side made them look average last time out,

if you take it that "bad" is worse than "average" then what you are saying is that Tyrone made them look better than Tyrone.
