Soccer & Rugby Return To Croke Park

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Former GAA president Sean Kelly believes international soccer and rugby will be played in Croke Park again, so what do you's make of that. Would you be for or against them returning or do you believe that they won't even ask considering they have the Aviva now? Personally I was always for the opening up of Croke Park and I would actually like to see some soccer and rugby games played there again, particularly if we're going to put in a serious bid for a RWC, which would also require more Gaa stadiums opened.

Its around this time ten years ago that the historic gaa motion was passed that the so called foreign matches could be played in Croke Park. I was always in favour for it. Croke Park is a world class stadium so show it off to the world.

Considering the only time I was able to get my hands on rugby tickets was when they played in Croke Park, I'd be all for the Irish rugby team playing there again. I think given standard of current Irish soccer team, the Aviva would be big enough to accommodate the demand for their games.

I don't have an Issue with Croker park or any GAA Stadium being used for Rugby, Soccer or American football etc. However in saying that, I think Gaelic Games should always have priority over other sports when it comes to having use of their own stadiums.

How stupid can the gaa be? No way should those elitist rugger heads be allowed into any gaa stadium.

Please give examples of such elitism naming the relevant clubs/schools involved.

In reality likely croke park will only be used for world cup bid

Nice to see attitudes have eased on this which is no real surprise, 10 years ago this was a red hot topic and this thread would probably already have 5 pages. The Gaa is under no obligation to open it's doors, but it is a nice gesture, not to mention how they can work this to their financial and promotional benefit, makes sense all round really and to be honest in my opinion Croker is a far superior stadium than the Aviva anyway.

1. Its been done before.
2. How would GAA be "stupid" if they did allow it?
3. How is rugby "elitist"?
4. Why are you so bitter and insecure about rugby?

Why would soccer or rugby need to use croker bar maybe game rugby games against France and England the Aviva is well able to cope with the demand. It would not make much sense the Irfu/Fai paying a pile of money to the gaa when the have there own ground. The only exception to this would be a winning rugby world cup bid or a champions league final.

Not going to happen. The FAI and IRFU sold the naming rights to the stadium to Aviva and part of that contract is that all home senior internationals will be played there (maximising publicity for Aviva). When the IRFU arranged an autumn series game with Samoa a couple of years ago and played it in Thomand it had to be packaged as an A international even though it was the full senior squad that took part.

Inevitable.Rugby has outgrown the Aviva and needs a bigger stadium. Croke Park is full to capacity on only 2 Sundays in the year. On most other occasions it is at less than half capacity and loss making to host games there. rugby needs the stadium, the GAA needs the money --- in 20 years I predict there will be more rugby played in Croke Park than GAA!
