It was a visual aid to identify him as the playmaker, made him that bit more recognisable to other players when they looked up the field....

Won an Nfl in 1994 at 17/18 IIRC.?

He made the game look simple and never tried to complicate it, he had all the skills allied with great vision and temperament, he supplied ollie murphy with the bullets and murphy was a great finisher, those two really complemented each others games

It's all about opinions and different era's of course. Looking back I would consider Giles a playmaking centre forward, a role that Greg Blaney excelled at in the early 90's. They would be the two best exponents of the role in my time. If I had to decide between the two I would go for Giles because he was more mobile and dare I say slightly more accurate. He also excelled for his country too lets not forget.

I remember him. One of the best players on a superb Meath side. I agre with all the others that he was an excellent playmaker and taker of scores/frees. 2 inside the 1st minute of the 2nd half of one of the Mayo finals to drag Meath back into it.

Have to agree with you liam, I thought he got too much praise for what he brought to the game. Id rate Michael Hegarty as a better player.

Greatest player I've ever seen in the flesh or had pleasure of playing against.

Always seemed to be in acres of space and played with his head up. Hard as nails when he hit you but always very fair. Also, almost incongruously polite to opponents and the ref on the field, in the context of how Meath club football is often played at least.

I've seen people refer to his two All-Ireland penalty misses which is fair enough, but lets not forget his penalty in the 1996 All Ire final, an incredible penalty that could not have been placed any better, hit with inside of the foot, clipped right post and ran along inside of the side net.

As a Meath man I rate him as the best Meath footballer of the last 25 years. He did step away from the intercounty scene in his early thirties, but that seems to be the standard retiring age these days. He only done so after he had achieved every accolade possible, and more than once!

He was still pulling the strings for Skyrne a few years ago, winning his 5th Senior Championship at the age of 36/37
To this day he still looks like he'd be fit enough for 70 minutes in Croke Park!

A pure class act on and off the field...

I never said Giles was better than Ogie Moran.I said the way he carried himself was similiar.Both were very clean players who played the game in the right spirit.Ogie was faster and a better player overall but Giles was a fantastic playmaker.
