Another magical day in Croker......

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Sadly I've said this time and time again. the GAA dont use their heads. For example, there was such uproar with the AI semi final being played in Limerick last year but I think it worked perfectly, the atmosphere was amazing. But no, the GAA continue to play league games, 4th round qualifiers, Leinster quarter and semi finals, and AI quarters and Semis in an 82000 sweater stadium. Play these games in smaller venues, eg an AI quarter or semi in Thurles etc

I've trodden this path plenty of times before but sure I'll dip the toe in again, using Croker consistantly for Dublin league matches is farcical and unfair and that's my opinion. If Parnell Park isn't fit to hold the attendance then that's Dublin's problem and should be up to them to renovate the place or find a new site and build a decent ground, and no not that proposed white elephant out at the M50 that they wanted to put ourselves and Kildare and Louth into, a ground built by Dublin for Dublin with a capacity between 20'000 and 30'000 to satisfy the requirements for O'Byrne Cup, Walsh Cup, National League and early round games in the championship. Every other county has to pony up the dough to upgrade their facilities as grants alone won't do it so Dublin should do the same. It's a dilution of the importance of our main GAA ground when you see footballing tripe like last night played in front of under 20'000, and that was a poor crowd for a double header which included a very appetising league quarter final although it turned into a romp for the impressive Dubs. It's well past time that the Dublin County Board looked at building a decent county ground of their own, the fact that they don't have one despite the population, success and sponsorship money is a disgrace to be honest, and that's not having a go that's just stating a fact.....

Playing in Parnell Park would be a real step back. I think way too much is made of Croke park being an 82k stadium. Close off the upper tiers as they do and you have a 50k stadium, the same as Thurles and similar to Limerick, Killarney, Cork and Clones. The dubs also usually get 20k in there while the other venues I mentioned typically get between 3 and 10k.

The Dubs were as unlucky as you could possibly be with the league draw this year. Ulster teams of late anyway have a name for being defensive and leading to a poor spectacle and that's the way it turned out.

What if a decision was made to scrap the spring series and return to Parnell Park and next years draw threw up home games against Kerry, Cork, Meath and Mayo as it well could? They could be 4 excellent games with open football and big crowds. 4 great opportunities to promote the game would be lost.

We have limited opportunities to show case our games compared to Leinster / Munster Rugby. Dublin GAA should be complimented and encouraged for their initiative, yeah it didn't work out great for them this year mostly due to factors outside of their control, next year they wont be facing 3 ulster teams and the series more than likely will be way better. There is massive competition from rugby and the premier league, it's hard to build a brand to compete on a handful of championship games each year.

20,000 pretty solid crowd for league game really especially considering derry arent going well...attendance for tyrone game was excellent..would have more of issue with people losing home games cause playing the dubs in front of an empty croker..with their own home games though they are dead right to get the extra people in

Yeah I know, money that could be put towards redeveloping Parnell Park, a new ground or something more beneficial, and whatever pot it goes into doesnt justify using Croker the whole time, if Dublin had a decent sized ground of their own they could maximise their own revenue and play in a ground with decent atmosphere the whole time, it would make far more sense for the Dubs as well as everyone else

Spend a load of money on a white elephant stadium when there are already 2 stadiums in the county that we can use......hhhhhmmmmmm

Lemme think about that one!

MesAmis surely an extra 10k at Parnell would suffice to take these games out of croker?

Ye need a stadium fit to hold around 25 to 30k for your early season and league matches as well as possible championship first round matches, either that or do something with Parnell Park, that is not white elephant territory that is servicing a need. Croke Park belongs to the GAA membership, it just so happens to be in Dublin, that does not mean that you should have unlimited use to it whenever you see fit. Dublin needs a proper fit for purpose county ground of their own, the fact that they don't have one in this day and age is simply wrong

Yes Croke Park belongs to the GAA and last time I checked Dublin GAA was part of that organisation.

We use Croke Park when the GAA sees fit because it pays the GAA for Dublin to use it rather than it lying idle. When it doesn't make sense for the GAA to rent Croke Park out to Dublin then it isn't going to be used.

What is simply wrong is County Boards going on massive vanity projects and getting themselves into massive debts. That doesn't benefit anyone.

I don 't know anyone in Dublin who wouldn't want that but there is no room in Donnycarney to expand Parnell by that number. Hence the M50 suggestion. I'm not a fan of league games in Croker but the DCB have backed themselves into a corner with the season ticket scheme. Seats are reserved and no stadium in the capital other than Croker can hold those numbers.

i cannot see why people complain about the crowds
there was
23 thousand at the donegal game
27 thousand at the tyrone game
and 20 thousand at the derry game
most counties dont get anywhere near that for championship games
as dahayser said we got three counties at home who are among the three most negative sides to watch haha
we got 22 thousand at dublin v mayo last year and was far better atmopshere than the 70 odd thousand
for the quarter finals v monaghan of the all ireland
