Referee standards

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

The refeering standards have been pretty poor and frustrating as each referee seen to be interpreting the rules differently. In Cork/Monaghan game Dessie Mone got a black card. 2/3 Cork players done the same and only got yellow and just name ticked. Tyrone Peter Hughes deliberately pulled down his man and only yellow produced.Aidan O'Shea black carded yesterday.Michael Murphy does the exact same on John Small not even booked.

The referees are not been helped by players going down easily and players grabbing opposition players hand/arm and dragging them to the ground.

Then we had a farce Saturday evening when the Donegal manager sent down one of his selectors wearing his santa little helper hat to stand behind the goal and distract the Dublin freetaker. Like sometime you see in a u12 game

Its not all the referees faults, I would blame some of the managers. Armagh conceded 39 frees in Wexford Park yesterday, mostly in the Wexford half of the field seemed to be a target to foul out the field and allow the team to get set up, effective but terrible to watch

Eddie Kinella was poor yesterday. I counted twice by Tyrone and once by ourselves a player picking the ball up of the ground or touching it on the ground. Also can anything be done about goalkeepers wasting time with kick outs? It took Tyrone half and hour to kick the ball out yesterday.....none of the above is sour grapes. We were terrible yesterday and deserved nothing from the game.

1691338 Thought Maurice Deegan had a shocker in the Donegal v Dublin game in Croke Park last night also! The amount of targeted cynical fouling by Dublin players was plain for all to see - so called black card offences but Deegan didnt follow through any of the time! Got so support from linesmen or umpires either! Off the ball punch on Neil McGee by his Dublin marker was shocking and in plain view of the umpires too but again of course the soft option was to book both players!

Hahah your a gas man Lifford Gael ill give you that

The trouble with the refereeing in Castlebar was that Eddie Kinsella tried to "let the game flow" and as a consequence it erupted into mini-riots on occasions. I think if a foul is committed then a free should be given. Waving play on just because a player still has possession of the ball only encourages more fouling.

Maybe it was the contrast, but I though Fergal Kelly in the Cork/Monaghan game was quite good. He let a few things go, but mostly he blew for every foul and was quick to move the ball closer to goal for any dissent. I am happy with that.

I can't for the life of me understand some of the flak referees, umpires & linesmen have to put up with.

Granted, they aren't perfect, they make mistakes. Mrs MuckrossHead has shepherded the children out of earshot of my profanites against officials down the years, but they are human & just like the players get things wrong.

It also has to be said the the players do not make life any easier for them with their playacting & general attempts at cute hoorism throughout the 70 mins. A referee would need eyes in the back of his head to keep up.

Add to that supporters looking at incidents through glasses of various tints & it's a wonder anyone steps forward to take on the job.

I remember many years ago complaining bitterly to a ref about a poor decision & he told me that however bad he was performing he was a country mile ahead of my efforts on the day.

So lets hear it for the officials.

When are the players and managers going to take responsibility for the mess that is made of these games. If a ref makes one or two bad discussions they are blasted, the players who refuse to play the game within the rules and who give away frees get away scott free. While I would say some of the referees decisions over the couple of games I have seen were questionable, I saw quite a lot of players who had no interest in playing the game within the rules and who's behavior on the pitch was terrible. The constant surrounding of the referee by the players and shouting has to stop, it has become more and more like soccer. Time for managers and players to pull their horns in, these are the people who are ruining games not referees.

Agree with last 2 posts.
Referees have an impossible task right now but they dont always help themselves.

Teams are so tactically set up that sometimes a main aim is to stop another player by any means possible. Neil McGee is a class player but he is also known for his dark arts. On Saturday Dublin obviously had a ploy to stop the 2 McHughs.

The amount of off the ball stuff on Saturday was mental but I have seen worse (Armagh last year and few other examples which I cant think of) But what can the referee do. After half the passes the 2 players came together.

but the ref should have known before the game that this was going to be the case. Neither team likes the other because they are both physical teams. If the first coming together resulted in Yellow each it would have helped.

Maurice Deegan had the right way in the final of 2012 when he flashed a number of early yellows which put a complete stop to the nonsense.

I also agree that the mouthing at referees is disgeaceful carry on & should again be penalised severely. In rugby only the team captain is allowed to speak to the referee, a system we should try here.

overall the board its very bad and its the same at club level as well, I watched the Tyrone match yesterday.... have to say Aidan o Shea black card was wrong for to reasons ok he did catch Morgan but was rolling on the ground if he didn't protect himself Morgan was going to hit him so its a lose lose situation for Oshea. Also there was a few other Tyrone players pulled down Mayo players nothing, Mayo were at it as well but I think Tyrone make more of it than other teams that's only going by yesterdays game.

Having Watched Tyrone v Mayo live I don't have any great problem with the ref in general. He consulted his linesmen and umpires on every big decision. There are always going to be calls missed either way.

My only issue is the black cards or lack of them.
O sheas wasn't a black card - it was either red or yellow - it seemed he gave a black because red would have been to harsh.
He booked a tyrone player for dragging a mayo player back and clearly signalled it twice. Problem was the mayo player was pulled back onto the ground which is a clear black card.

It seemed the ref was swapping between red, yellow and black regardless of the foul

Agree with you 100% there Muck. Don't like seeing this nonsense from any team. It's a difficult job being a referee. It can be frustrating for fans and players to see decisions go against you but it's a thankless task being the man in the middle. I would be a supporter of a second on-field official to be honest and much more involvement required from the oompa loompas also. This idea of being seen and not heard is rubbish. They should be able to offer their views and observations on any contentious issue, not just something that happens off the ball around the goalmouth, which seems to be their only input these days.

Mayotyroneman......

I was just pointing out it was a cynical, cowardly way, of injuring players that was allowed to go on throughout Tyrones dominant period that people were blowing to the wind as tough manly football. Lads got a tap in the face and were diving around like they were shot and supporters were neighing for cards of a bloody colour whilst guys were dropping their body weight on a lads head or chest, and that was fine.

Donegal posters........

Well done on your semi final victory last year. Don't be going moaning when teams put mustard on the return of physical stuff your guys are throwing out to them.

Mayo guys......

O'Shea didn't have to hit the keeper, he meant to hit him. He definitely could have reduced the contact, from what I seen he tried maximise it.

Like usual the refs can't win. If they let it flow they run the risk of losing control and encourage dangerous tackles. If they officiate like they should, to the rules, people call them fussy. Impossible job.

I agree with nearly everything you say JayP, on the O Shea incident I think if he had of tried to lessen the blow to Morgan, I think Morgan would have hit him with more, I do believe that he had the most of it as well to try and get him off.... I have seen that a few times from the white jerseys

Cormac Reilly had real bad day at the office. He hasn't had charge of a county game since the new year came in

Must have been a different Cormac Reilly refereeing in Portarlington for Dublin's game against Laois in the O'Byrne cup so.

AT cork game yesterday Michael Murphy dangerous tackle. close lined Cadogan, should have straight red instead of 2 yellow cards
