GAA apologises to Wylie

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Well said, Supermon. I think the GAA apology is for the fact that there isn't yet a proper punishment for this particular offence. McKiernan has apologised but he got away lightly, I think. Let's move forward as a nation & a sporting organisation.

Am glad this is allowed be finally discussed. I think cavan would send out a very strong message if they didn't pick McKiernan for the first few games of the League. it would send out that its not acceptable by any player on their panel. But I can't see it happening

Or is it only the fashionably-politically-correct stuff he bleats about.

Shaggy yea it would be even more appropriate if they dropped him for the league, the guy has apologised and there has to be a line drawn in it , 6 months would have been appropriate but cavan could extend the two match bans as a way of showing this is nit acceptable. As for it been same as calling someone bald?? . Will you get a grip, only the lowest ignorant form of persons would revert to racial or sectarianism on the field of play.

Funny how the fashionable politically correct stuff has been popular here since about 1798.

ALL sledging is wrong. Personal insults of ANY kind are unacceptable.

Are yis all mad?
Cavan will not drop their best midfielder.
He has been given the maximum punishment possible and has also apologised.
He was a fool but the selectors aren't.
You won't get blood lads.

Wise up stormcrow. There is a hierarchy of abuse and sectarian/racist abuse is right at the top of it . You are correct when you say that racist/sectarian abuse is reprehensible.

I am in a way surprised at the shock this seems to have caused some. Have you had your ear plugs in when Northern County and Club teams have played their Southern counterparts. Sectarian and Racist abuse aplenty from both the players and the stands. Or maybe that does not count as it is possibly more gamesmanship/sledging than anything?

Greengrass,

All forms of abuse are reprehensible.

I still say that knocking somenoes teeth out is worse than racially abusing them. If racial abuse results in a harsh penalty, so should incapacitating them. (Sorry guys, that's just how I feel).

Have to agree with Naysayer. I've heard it on match days in Croke park. Generalised sectarian abuse thrown about, with the only requirement being that you have a northern accent.

Naysayer, what in your opinion is sectarian or racist abuse?? Just wondering. Through my many many years attending gaa matches against ulster opposition the worst i have heard was something along the line of nordie so and so. Surely while not nice or pc you can hardly call it racial???
I mean are ulster teams now considering themselves to be a different race??

supermon I am not saying that I get particularly offended and I am serious when I throw in the gamesmanship/sledging aspect but it has been going on for years at the same time and surely folk have heard it aplenty. You boys are probably close enough to the border to get it from some quarters as well.

royaldunne what about Brits, black ba$tards, Pr*ds - I have heard them all and others - worst was actually in a club championship game - a match observer let his disgust be known and let it be known should the Northern Club want to put in a complaint he would back it - said Northern Club did not pursue it.

I wouldn't say that we are calling ourselves a different race, but I've heard fans of a particular county taunt northern fans, throwing everything from sectarian slurs to calling them British etc etc. The sectarian stuff is particularly bad if you are of a particular religious persuasion. And that works both ways. A ulster catholic attending a rugby match at Ravenhill wouldn't like to hear something like that.

Don't really know where i stand on this, I've been called an awful lot of things on a pitch (aswell as having my family abused by people who know them by name etc) I've also said things in the heat of the moment on the pitch that i wouldn't be proud of, but have always shaken hands with the people after and have shrugged it off.

On the sectarian thing, i played soccer for a mixed team in Belfast most of the teams we would have played would have been from a 'loyalist' areas. i would normally have my GAA bag for my gear and can remember a game when i got a really bad tackle and the player said to me 'take your gaa fenian bag and fuck off back to ireland' now thankfully i was able to continue and took the smug look off the guys face by putting the ball in the net a few times and winning the game. Maybe its a case of being so used to the situation up here in belfast that it doesn't bother me and i have thick skin for it. any abuse i ever get really drives me on and I've always viewed abuse as a form of flattery, would they be trying to put me off if i wasn't hurting their side?

I suppose on reflection the abuse regarding the Cavan and Monaghan players in question was being delivered appropriate to the target and therefore offensive whereas the abuse us Northerners have taken is probably more designed to rankle with us rather than being factually correct and maybe there is where the subtle difference lies. But personally I do not get that wild offended even though I am certainly aware of it whereas I can understand the Monaghan guy being hurt by the sentiments being delivered at him.
