RTE Manager of the Year

Just proves my point- it should have been Brian Cody. The Irish Rugby team were a little bit unlucky not getting team of the year though. That said congrats to Cork Ladies, a wonderful achievement.

Since when was the population of Kilkenny reduced to 60,000?

Since a thread about populations and chances of winning all irelands. Someone said that the population of kilkenny was that. I see it is 95,000. Big difference.

There is a well established process in professional sport, especially in the UK, of building up a manager as high as possible to ensure the inevitable fall is suitably dramatic. Irish rugby and media has embraced this throughout the professional era with Gatland, O'Sullivan, and Kidney - Joe is just the next in line. Having said that iv no problem with Joe winning this award - a case could be made for him, Cody, Fitzmaurice and Stephen Kenny. In many ways trying to compare each man's achievements is impossible but it keeps the debates going in winter.

Ormond - no expert on the rugby but did England not beat Ireland in the six nations in Feb? Irish rubgy team were not unbeaten all year.
Watched the show sunday nite - without being too bothered about who was given the awards but thought it was pure cringe giving O'Driscoll the lifetime achievement award. Also looked like they were set up to present the team of the year to one of the rugby teams and got a hop when the Cork ladies team topped the vote..Moloney didnt seem to have a clue who Nollaig Cleary was!

Dont think i did say they were unbeaten and but if i did oops. They won their main competition and beat 2 of the best sides in world
It was cringeful and a joke that O Driscoll got the hall of fame place

Ormond I correct you,

I'm not inscure about Rugby per say, just the Dublin 4 team......if you were from Leinster you would understand that.

after clare winning the team of the year over dublin last year i choose not to watch or pay any attention to it this year.
it obviously has no consitency in this case if fitzmaurice didnt get the award
as he done exactly what clare did
where as schmidt done what dublin did last year and he gets it this year.
or is it down to him being a rugby person?

Who are all of these players from Dublin 4? The team is a Leinster team and only your insecurities think that this side is a Dublin 4 side. I grew up for a while in Dublin. Have many friends playing in Dublin and who always have played there.
How is the team a Dublin 4 team. What makes them a Dublin 4 side?

Clare totally deserved the award last year. Dublin would have as well but It was decided Clare were winners and there should be no complaints about it. How can what Schmidt did be compared to Dublin last year. Schmidt coaching a rugby side is nothing to do with him getting the award

how did clare deserve the award?
they were nearly relegated in the league
didnt win munster championship
they only performed from july to september
dublin won the national league, leinster and all ireland championships
its called best team of the year not biggest upset team of year.
schmidt done similiar to dublin last year won almost all in front of him
so therefore deserved it in my book
but fitzmaurice done exctly like clare came from nowhere in 2-3 months to win the all ireland
if clare were crowned for that reason and fitzmaurice is not crowned for that reason
then there is no consitnency in the awards at all.

Clare won the All-Ireland in sensational style . Dublin were well below their best in the final and stumbled over the line as Mayo failed to perform too.

you reference one match for each side
how does that make anybody team of the year?
a championship is won from the first round to the final.
a team of the yer is that the best team for that year
if there was a cinderella story award sure clare would have been nailed on for it
but when you compare the 2013 season
they both won the all irelabd titles
clare didnt even make there provincial final
whereas dublin won theres.
clare almost got relegated in the league
where as dublin won the league
facts dont lie

think clare captured the imagination with some people more perhaps is all cause more of an underdog story and davy fitz being a big personality probably swung it for them....u do make a lot of fair points though...winning the final with a whimper didnt help dublins case though..i think if mayo had won the all ireland that they would have won the award put it that way..bigger story and so on usually wins these type of things

At the end of the day the team of the year is decided by popular choice its not a panel deciding it. So hence the Cork ladies incredible achievement, not only in their success on the pitch but in securing this award.

Hill16 I referenced THE game of the year, the big one, the one they all want to win. And Clare won a magnificent 2 game contest playing sensational hurling. Dublin were involved in a fabulous semi final against Kerry but they fell way below those standards in the final and fell over the line against a Mayo team who blew it in the first half of that match. That counts for a huge amount with the sporting public. Your other points are spurious. The hurling league is much tighter than the football league. There are only five games in the hurling league, there are seven in the football league. The margins for error are much finer in the hurling league. . You generally have the best six teams n the country competing in the top division in hurling and you could end up playing 60% of your league games against those teams away from home. Derry made the football league final this year and did exactly what in the championship ? Please don't insult the Munster hurling championship by comparing it to the Leinster football championship.

this thread is going off base. I am talking about the Sports Manager of the Year. Not the team of the year, won by Cork ladies GAA. Brian Cody has won 10 All Irelands. He should have won manager of the year. Last year Davy Fitz got it- for Clare winning hurling. But How many All Irelands has he won. Cody has won 10!

Galwayford, this is about this year, not the last 16 years in which Cody has won his all irelands.
Cody is a legend but the cats wining the all Ireland is no big deal at this stage.
Cody is more of a lifetime achievement kind of guy.

A lot of these awards are given to teams or Managers whose results are ones that are percieved to have went against the grain or captured the public sentiment. so the word " best " is probably the wrong word,
Dublin were one of the best teams last year in GAA but after winning in 2011 they were favourites a lot of the time throughout 2013 and they didnt have people talking like Clares matches with Cork did. Kilkenny and Cody and Cork Ladies also have suffered from this.
The successful and consistant teams or individuals sometimes get overlooked in favour of one or two game thrillers or the underdog story.
Katie Taylor is another example who doesnt get the recognition. A person who because of her profile and talent almost single handily gets her sport into the Olympics and then goes and wins the Gold . For me she is Irelands greatest sportsperson .

AthCliath,

I Disagree about Katie Taylor to be honest. She is now in a comfort zone winning endless amateur titles etc and is practically unbeatable. She has no ambition to achieve greater things in the sport by turning professional.

I think we should measure our greatest sports people by what they achieve in the top of their field.
