Just proves my point- it should have been Brian Cody. The Irish Rugby team were a little bit unlucky not getting team of the year though. That said congrats to Cork Ladies, a wonderful achievement. galwayford (Galway) - Posts: 2520 - 23/12/2014 10:43:36 1679865 Link 0 |

There is a well established process in professional sport, especially in the UK, of building up a manager as high as possible to ensure the inevitable fall is suitably dramatic. Irish rugby and media has embraced this throughout the professional era with Gatland, O'Sullivan, and Kidney - Joe is just the next in line. Having said that iv no problem with Joe winning this award - a case could be made for him, Cody, Fitzmaurice and Stephen Kenny. In many ways trying to compare each man's achievements is impossible but it keeps the debates going in winter. Soma (UK) - Posts: 2630 - 23/12/2014 13:28:50 1679893 Link 0 |

Clare won the All-Ireland in sensational style . Dublin were well below their best in the final and stumbled over the line as Mayo failed to perform too. Greengrass (Louth) - Posts: 6031 - 27/12/2014 17:26:40 1679959 Link 0 |

think clare captured the imagination with some people more perhaps is all cause more of an underdog story and davy fitz being a big personality probably swung it for them....u do make a lot of fair points though...winning the final with a whimper didnt help dublins case though..i think if mayo had won the all ireland that they would have won the award put it that way..bigger story and so on usually wins these type of things fabio8 (USA) - Posts: 2182 - 27/12/2014 21:18:32 1679972 Link 0 |
At the end of the day the team of the year is decided by popular choice its not a panel deciding it. So hence the Cork ladies incredible achievement, not only in their success on the pitch but in securing this award. arock (Dublin) - Posts: 4897 - 28/12/2014 11:32:32 1679981 Link 0 |
Hill16 I referenced THE game of the year, the big one, the one they all want to win. And Clare won a magnificent 2 game contest playing sensational hurling. Dublin were involved in a fabulous semi final against Kerry but they fell way below those standards in the final and fell over the line against a Mayo team who blew it in the first half of that match. That counts for a huge amount with the sporting public. Your other points are spurious. The hurling league is much tighter than the football league. There are only five games in the hurling league, there are seven in the football league. The margins for error are much finer in the hurling league. . You generally have the best six teams n the country competing in the top division in hurling and you could end up playing 60% of your league games against those teams away from home. Derry made the football league final this year and did exactly what in the championship ? Please don't insult the Munster hurling championship by comparing it to the Leinster football championship. this thread is going off base. I am talking about the Sports Manager of the Year. Not the team of the year, won by Cork ladies GAA. Brian Cody has won 10 All Irelands. He should have won manager of the year. Last year Davy Fitz got it- for Clare winning hurling. But How many All Irelands has he won. Cody has won 10! galwayford (Galway) - Posts: 2520 - 28/12/2014 20:32:23 1679999 Link 0 |
Galwayford, this is about this year, not the last 16 years in which Cody has won his all irelands. joncarter (Galway) - Posts: 2692 - 28/12/2014 20:57:31 1680000 Link 0 |

A lot of these awards are given to teams or Managers whose results are ones that are percieved to have went against the grain or captured the public sentiment. so the word " best " is probably the wrong word, AthCliath (Dublin) - Posts: 4347 - 28/12/2014 22:06:00 1680007 Link 0 |
