If we actually picked forwards who could take a score we'd be dangerous. Can't remember a worse display of shooting.

spot on there
mcmanus was the only forward who was good enough to be in there

Looking at Gaelic 'goals and points' versus behinds, Australia got 17 scores to 5 behinds while Ireland got 11 scores to 7 behinds. Without seeing a stat, I'd say Ireland also had a lot more wides. What does that say about the kicking skills of Gaelic footballers? I'll suggest two possibilities - we don't coach kicking skills enough or Gaelic football skills aren't that difficult to master?

all that says is
aussies had a far better team picked than we did
we have a lot better forwards in gaelic football who are accurate
than the forwards picked in that team today, who were selected probably for another reason

Pity about the poor start, great second half fightback but too much work left to do. Probably enough done in the second half for the series to continue.

Well done to McManus on winning the Best Irish player, great performance from him in the second half, even more impressive considering he only flew out late and wouldn't have been fully focusing on this until this Monday.

probably the main reason he did so well as he played the way he always does playing gaelic football

Sadly this game was not available for viewing in the UK so had to follow it on twitter and on here. The different views between both is amazing. Most on twitter were Aussies and thought it was an excellent game, they loved watching all their stars on the one field and are disappointed there isn't a second game in the series. Most on here just want to throw a few cheap shots at the players and call the whole thing a waste of time. I have little knowledge of twitter but apparently it was the 3rd most tweeted about event worldwide this morning - any chance our best players get for such exposure should be welcomed.

a game of two halves really
we tryed to play a differant game than we are used to for the first half and then went out and played galeic football
in the second half,
one thing i would say is its not our best players we saw today in my opinion
we fielded a team that represented most counties

Can't believe that it's the 3rd most tweeted about thing on in the WORLD this morning. This should be highlighted to rte the. Seeing as they succumbed to a previous twitter campaign to get a minority sport on TV. It's only fair and they'd have a years advance notice so could even give it proper build up instead of only having a week to maybe defer an American sitcom that was cancelled after 1 season. I can't see it happening though.

It sounded like that hill. Some lads on here seemed all geared up to get the digs in but after the second half improvement they had to settle for saying that the refs were helping them! You are also right about the squad selection being focused more on getting a geographical spread than maybe the 25 best players but that might be no bad thing either, as it raises the profile of lesser known players around the country. No doubt lads like your own man Connolly would have been an improvement, but it sounds like a better tactical approach would have seen Ireland possibly win it anyway.

Terrible start by Ireland, they looked panicked on the ball and a little scared if you ask me. Murphy was slow in full forward, pity Donaghy wasn't available he'd of won an amount of ball. Kavanagh played a stormer for me. Based on the second half I hope the series continues and the Aussies continue to field strong teams.

I must add I liked the 6 handpass rule also. Something the GAA should look at.

To be honest that was a very good game. Basic skills in the first half from the Irish was very disappointing. I though Sean Cavanagh had a brilliant 2nd half and was a real driving force, particularly in the 3rd quarter. I would echo Stevie McDonnell's sentiment though querying why Ciaran McKeever wasn't there. The game suits him perfect.

Faithful yeah I liked the look of the handpass rule aswell. Connolly is wuith Vincents so wouldnt have been able to play he would have been some addition much better than O'shea, Murphy and Walsh. Although there bodies are geared for mid august- September as opposed to late November

The referees did give Ireland the rub of the green in the second half, no doubt about it.

The commentator on TG4 alluded to it on anumber of occasions.

Ireland's inability to kick the ball accurately needs to be seen to be believed. Junior C stuff at times.

Early was tactically destroyed in the first 2 quarters.

Thought it was a very good game to be fair and would have loved to have seen another match. Also I hope the series continues. Early's selection is to be questioned. Chrissy McKaigue shouldn't have been playing with a provincial championship final up and coming. Aidan O Shea was poor and Hughes should have been in sooner. Mattie Donnelly was probably our best player in my eyes and McManus was our only natural forward Paddy was very calm and relaxed with anything that went in high unlike their keeper. Ciaran McKeever should have been in there without a shadow of a doubt.

Next year I would like to see Paul Flynn, Donaghy and Connelly in there barring none of them are still playing club football.

Have to say I enjoyed the game an not a big fan of the series. Serious effort put in by the players in the 2nd half and work rate was phenomenal.

Felt that when Ireland focused on playing to their strengths - moving the ball quickly and support runners.

Bit of blame must be put on the coaches, focused too much on the Aussies style of play, trying to match them physically rather than focusing on our own skills - maybe that's why McManus had such good game!

Shooting was so disappointing though, Aussies showed us how to shoot for scores!

Alarming how superior the Australians kicking of the round ball was compared to ours. Score flattered us a wee bit as they took their foot off the gas. Our lads seemed petrified of the tackle so they kicked it or handed it off aimlessly so many times. Tactics of this game are so simple. Put low balls into the corner, but we only copped that in the 3rd quarter where McManus was a threat every time he got the ball. The likes of JOD, McBrearty, Clarke or Kev Mac would've been handy out there purely because of their pace. Didn't work out at all for Murphy as physically they could contain him and he didn't have the pace. For a guy who has done so well out there at their game, thought Pearse struggled badly. Tuohy was a miss. All the same, fun game, enjoyed it. ~PHS
