Australia v Ireland

Starting to move a lot better but it looks like it's too little too late. When we move they can't handle us. Goals are badly needed. And as I type we miss another one.

finally starting to play gaelic football
and not trying to play a hybrod game
if we focus on playing our own game the way its played the scores will come

Nail and head spring to mind with that post hill. Exactly what was needed. Stick to our strengths.

Disagree to some extent about playing "our" game. We played the first two quarters essentially playing a defensive set up akin to Donegal. Actually meeting men rather than simply retreating back inside our 45 has meant the Aussies aren't getting to settle themselves on the ball as much. We should be taking the best parts of attacking football, and also taking in the more pysical side of this code. We're still not going in for tackles, which is killing us.

Hillman, that's a nothing statement, as cliched as "face the puckout"! Playing Gaelic football? It was soccer-style skills that led to the goal, so what are you trying to say? It's been a game of two halves...(or 4 quarters even!)

A poor 3rd quarter from the Australians has led us to not get humiliated. I think the referees had a part to play in our comeback too in fairness.

How many kicks have we put completely wide in this game? It really has been shocking.

If we actually picked forwards who could take a score we'd be dangerous. Can't remember a worse display of shooting.

Kevin mc Loughlin has been very good since he came on. At least he's playing with his head up.

Well done to Australia.

By far the better side. Irish very poor and were really lucky to only get beaten by 10 points in the end as the Australian team eased up and the refs starting giving Ireland a lot of easy frees so that it wouldn't end up an annilation.

Ireland's kicking was embarassing at times.

Fair play to McManus as he was Ireland's best player.

Some awful performances from someof the Irish players that we would have been looking to for big performances. O'Shea, Murphy, Munnelly etc.

Looking at Gaelic 'goals and points' versus behinds, Australia got 17 scores to 5 behinds while Ireland got 11 scores to 7 behinds. Without seeing a stat, I'd say Ireland also had a lot more wides. What does that say about the kicking skills of Gaelic footballers? I'll suggest two possibilities - we don't coach kicking skills enough or Gaelic football skills aren't that difficult to master?

for most of the last two quarters, the crowd were doing the Mexican wave. This tells me that they were not entertained by on-field action, so they made their own off the field.

Kavanagh, Donnelly, McManus, McLoughlin, McCarthy and F Hanly all did well.
Great 2nd half for Ireland. A bit of pride restored. Aussies deserved it.
Maybe a future in this game if both sides could field their strongest teams. Ireland certainly missing some top players. Would have made a huge difference I think.

what a shambles of a display...kicking was embarrassing with the aussies running rings round the irish team with quick hand passing...some of the irish players looked like they had been o the beer for a few days...time to end this junket....the australians would have won by a cricket score (literally) if they had taken their goal chances in first quarter....

not a nothing statement
its perfect sense
we play gaelic football they play aussie rules
when they were on top they were playing their own game
not worrying about us
when we got on top we played gaelic football
we went at them and stopped worrying about them going to tackle us if we had the ball
for too long in the game, they were tipping the ball on the ground away from themselves
and if a ball came in and bounced they were trying to fist it away fro them as they were worrying about being tackled
you didnt see the aussies worrying about us tackling them, they used their heads and caught the ball and moved with it.
we went looking for goals in the last few minutes and moved the ball at pace which worked,
where as trying to loom for marks around the pitch in the first half didnt suit us at all
