very disappointing, it was always on the cards that 2014 was going to be his last year but I thought that this year was such a downer for him with injuries that he would give next year another go.
Not to be though.

He's retiring as the best pound for pound footballer for Kerry in the 00's. A class act who had some major downers in the Kerry jersey like in 06 as well as some great highlights.
He came back and shoved the critism where the sun dont shine to many a kerry booer that year.
The 09 final he caused absolute anarchy in the Cork defence which caused Miskella to go back in the full back line.

best of luck in his retirement

In my opinion the best centre forward of his generation, if not the greatest ever. Certainly one of the top 5 forwards of the past 25 years and without doubt one of Kerry's greatest ever players.

You can talk about Gooch and JOD but you will live many a long day before you see a performance as sublime as that he produced against Cork last July.

You owe the Kingdom nothing Dec, but we owe you so much!!

Time for another of our young forwards to emerge from his shadow and become a new star for Kerry.

Didnt hear too many people say Declan was the greatest before he retired. Think people may be letting their hearts rule their heads. Not the greatest, but a great player no doubt.

JonCarter I can assure you that he is held as one our greatest players ever.
I don't say that lightly the guy had everything simple as that.

Not arguing that at all westkerry. Im a huge fan of him.
Its just that a couple of people here said he was THE GREATEST. When they have time to reflect im sure theyll admit there were better players, but no doubt he was ONE OF Kerrys all time greats.

Declan O'sullivan actually played for Tyrone in the allireland final of 1995 , so what do you think of that ?

One of the best centre forwards in the last 30-40 years. Up there with the greats like Ogie, Greg Blaney, Heffo and Trevor Giles. Enjoy your retirement!

He was some player alright. It takes unreal ability to take the scores. he did while running at the pace he could manage. On either foot as well.
The performance against Cork this year was just Rolls-Royce stuff. I'd liken it to the way Andrea Pirlo bosses soccer matches.

Sad to hear that Declan will never grace the field of Kerry again at any level as announced yesterday.
He never gave it less than 100% as the story below tells.
He'd already a shot of county championship medals to his name and a pair of banjaxed knees and still put it all on the line one more time.
Legend!

This is what GAA commitment is all about.
Declan O'Sullivan announced, earlier this morning, that his football career was over.
The 31-year-old forward stepped back from inter-county football last year but had hoped to play on for many more with Dromid Pearses - a club he first represented 16 years ago - and South Kerry.
O'Sullivan's last act as a footballer summed up a career and a man - selfless, courageous and team-first.
Earlier in the game O'Sullivan had set up Bryan Sheehan for South Kerry's goal. His biggest contribution would come later, however.
Playing for South Kerry, against Killarney Legion, in the Kerry Senior Football Club Championship replay, O'Sullivan upped his game after Bryan Sheehan had been shown the black card.
By that stage, O'Sullivan had already done serious damage to his knee. Something had definitely popped but there was no way he was going off.

With Sheehan missing for extra time, the three-time All Star demanded more ball upon himself and drove his teammates on.
In the 79th minute, a Legion attack broke down and South Kerry countered.
As play swept up the pitch, there was O'Sullivan, again, screaming for the ball.
It came his way and he held his own pass long enough to give Walsh ample space. Walsh fisted the ball over the bar and that was that - 1-13 to 1-12.
O'Sullivan spent Sunday night in hospital. Total loss of knee cartilage, he was informed.
It was over.
But, as footballing careers go, it was some way to go.
