I don't understand the Insurance issues considering most Junior teams in Clubs have a good few lads playing who are over 40!!! I think this is a great indea and should be embraced by the Gaa

Great idea. Fair play to any man that is lucky enough to be able to play away at that age. Great respect for them. Pity the head honchos in Croke park didn't show the same respect. Would be great to see more county's participate. Pity about the usual snide comments from a few. Good to see mainly positive response to this competition. Just to pick up on a point from Belclare1 about some of the galway players never played senior club football(!!!) What a ridiculous statement. Firstly some of the finest footballers and all Ireland winners never played senior club football. Would you believe they played for intermediate and even junior clubs. Secondly as I read in one of the local papers in mayo this competition gives a chance to men who never previously represented their county to do so. I for one wouldn't like to question the pride of any man involved in the game tomorrow. Looking forward to the future growth of this worthy competition.

WEARY What is ridiculous about my comment?? All i stated was that some of these lads never played senior club football and they play with senior clubs( which i may not have stated) That is not a disrespect to the players but maybe a little to the standard of player available to some counties. My issue is with the media blowing it up saying many inter county greats will be lining out when in fact there wont be many if any!! Fair play to anyone who gets to wear his county jersey, its something not to be knocked at all

I wonder if the physicality was taken completely out of it i.e. no shoulders allowed - a much more limited tackle - say something along the lines of basketball where if you touch the player's body at all it's a free, would this allow it to be brought under the GAA banner.

Might not appeal to everyone but as a way of getting round the insurance issues might be a possibility?

so the GAA are not encouraging players to keep playing as long as they can?
would they prefer for them to take up golf?

They might insure a basketball-style minimal contact game alright. But who'd want to play it or watch it. Sounds like GAA version of tag rugby.Even in your 40s you'd still be well able to play an aggressive game. As someone here said there's lads playing junior club football in their 40s and not a bother to them.

in relation to belclare 1 who stated that galway won 6 matches in 3 years i cannot let this comment go uncorrected .please note that galway played 7 matches including the final in 2012 , 6 matches in 2013 and five matches in 2014.galway , mayo ,leitrim/roscommon,longford /westmeath, dublin , antrim, down ,derry, monaghan ,cavan, tyrone and some others currently play masters football . back in the mid ninties as many as 24 counties participated shortly after it was launched by dr mick loftus then president of the gaa . the final used to be the curtain raiser to the under 21 final .mayo have won five times per the names on the cup . galway have won four now . galway first won it in 1999 captained by stephen joyce of clonbur .other previous winners include dublin, kildare , donegal and longford/westmeasth playing as longford . in relation to the standard of the players etc a substantial number have played for the county previously at some level minor 21 or junior . some were regulars at senior and some played at senior for a short term . a senior inter county team picks from a twelve year window 20years old to 32. an over 40s team has a four year window 40 to 44 or 45 so you would expect that a third have played senior for the county and that is about right on in the case of galway .a lot of ex galway seniors who were approached were either injured retired or involved training teams . a player of average ability who continues to play down the ranks junior a junior b junior c etc will make a more effective player at 40 than an ex senior county star who has not kicked a ball for ten years . in relation to some player who allegedly turned up at training uninvited - the galway masters welcome many players who have no real prospect of gatting a starting place but who bring up the numbers for an effective 15 a side match at training . hope that clarifies
