Joe Brolly prior to All-Ireland final...

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

His comparison of Murphy and Gooch was interesting also, he referred to Murphy as "the player of his generation". Not a massive stretch in fairness, but his evidence for it was caused by Gooch never turning up in All-Ireland finals, how he was always snuffed out and neutralised when it mattered against the Ulster teams.

Murphy was truly nullified in the final, and he refused to admit it. Bit of a double standard, but that aside I thought a lot of his points were very fair. He does aim to be controversial, but the vast majority of what he says is based on logic.

Bob Dolphin........ Yes murphy didn't have his best game on Sunday, mainly due to the fact that everytim he tried to run from deep he was blocked off and found it extremely hard to get into the game for this reason................. However just to remind you that m murphy was man of the match in the AI final in 2012...... So he can turn up on all Ireland final days

Shaggylegend,

That's completely wrong.

Kerry kicked 13 sides that normally we'd have converted at least 50% of.

the usual anti Kerry jealousy is alive and well.

We lost the greatest forward for 20 years to a cruciate, we lost the best halfback in Ireland and not to mention Galvin.

but then again we were lucky... Senior/Minor and Hogan cup... it ain't luck lad.

Ben,

Murphy is a class act,

I was nearly lynched after the game for saying this but its such a waste to see such a talent
so far from the goals.

A Donegal lad said I knew nothing,

I just replied that Murphy is an artist a superstar and he should be played in his strongest position.

I felt for Murphy and Lacey the most, two guys that are Donegal to the core

Donegal will be back

I agree, we would all love to see him on the edge of the square, unfortunately the truth of the matter is that we also need him around the middle, big Neil needs help with power and mobility around there...... We just need two of him... It's a bit like robbing Peter to pay Paul..... Personally if it was me I'd play on the 40 all day every day where he will always be involved but that bit closer to goal.....

Well done last week...... Better team on the day

@ GaryMc82 & shaggylegend - Ye've misread the post.

Clicking into gear is in reference to big wins. Mayo v Donegal 2013, capital v Monaghan 2014 and Donegal v capital 2014. For Kerry then: the finals of 04, 06 and 07, and capital quarter-final 09 and Munster 14.

Hard fought wins then are reference to the 09 and 14 finals. Ciarraí abú!

I don't think Kerry people are at all bothered by what Brolly is saying these days. They are All-Ireland champions and that's all that matters.

There's no doubt that when Armagh, Tyrone and Donegal were winning their All-Irelands, there was an awful lot of sniping from Kerry folk. There was a lot of talk about how these teams didn't play good football, a tag which stuck with them, in spite of it not being true. Armagh played good football, 2003 semi-final aside Tyrone played great football and Donegal were very attacking in 2012.

However, while the double standards are there for all to see on the Kerry side, it's also there to be soon from Brolly here. Brolly was always very faint in his criticism of those teams when they actually played ugly stuff (Tyrone 2003, Donegal 2011). He would get the criticism out of the way quickly, and then quickly move on to how fascinating it all was and how much smarter these teams were. He loved it once it was coming from Ulster. Kerry, much like those teams, only actually played one game of truly ugly football this year (the final). I also wouldn't be surprised if Fitzmaurice refined the system to incorporate attack with this ugly defensive game.

Also, Brolly often criticised Kerry for blinking first when Ulster teams put it up to Kerry. It was never true, it had more to do with Kerry just playing the wrong game. Now that that argument has been firmly put to bed as it was Donegal who cracked first last week, and Mayo were reeled in when Kerry looked dead and buried both days, I think Brolly is a bit cranky.

always picking on Joe, i think Joe tells it as it is, along with Pat, Colm, and hi best of luck to Kerry, yous won Sam,end of story, but hi Kerry lost the Junior All Ireland to Cavan, so Kerry do not win them all, as some Kerry people think,

Wides you kick yourself and no team deserves any sympathy for kicking wides. But yes Donaghy's close in free was very soft and yes Keane was charging more than Murphy was and the 45 not given, not to mention the Kerry lad who buried a Donegal lad with a shoulder into the chest after he got a free should have been a throw up etc. Plus check how M Murphy was limping for much of the game - he was trying hide it, but he wasn't moving right - he'd been got at early on. Whether by accident or design no one can say. None of those would matter much in a normal game, but in one as tight as that, where points were like goals, they all counted.
I hope both teams get another rattle at it next year, but knowing Kerry they'll always be back, whereas Donegal - not so sure.

Murphy an excellent footballer, but the Gooch head and shoulders above all others. There is really no doubting this.

I think RTE should now freshen things up. Yes Brolly was interesting and a good sideshow to the match. He was also a good analyst of the modern game, and makes some good points and also stimulates debate and thought. But now it is more about him and his opinions than the game itself.

He seems addicted to going the opposite direction to Spillane and O'rourke, (who hardly bothers speak any more).

I would say time for a new panel. O'Shea and Wheelan would be 2 dead certs if I were to call it. Possibly rotate a 3rd panelist to keep it interesting.

The issue that most people have about Brolly is not necessarily the points he makes (sometimes they are good), but the way he makes them. He sometimes changes his coat mid season.
This year I think that we saw some good panelists come on board, and sky obviously with bbc are going to push rte very strong with presentation and analysis. If this is the case, RTE are in real bother. It would be better to get people in the studio that were less partisan and could either commentate on a game without taking sides, or analyse a game without flag waving either.

I think people are a bit fed up of the bickering and negativity. Seriously I wouldn't be bothered listening to Brolly, Spillane and any of the boys who do the hurling at the moment.
I'd rather look at Sky any day. It's more constructive and the panel are better looking.

You've misinterpreted completely. I was merely saying that Brolly refused to admit he was wrong when it was put to him that MM had not showed up against Kerry, after championing him as a player who can overcome anything and anyone. I never said he can't do it, of course he can. However, he was neutralised in a big way in the final 2 weeks ago.
