Your county's cult hero?

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Jimmy Keaveney. Dragged out of retirement on more than one occasion and defied the laws of physics by performing amazing feats of athleticism in a body frame akin to that of Norm from Cheers. Also won everything that the game has to offer at club and county level. A true cult hero.

Eamonn Breen, Kerry half back in 97, hard as nails. Wing forwards cried when they saw him.

Mes Amis, what do Dublin supporters think of Shane Ryan?

I always liked him. Not the most skilful player but a great team player, strong as an ox, relentless energy, kept going til the final whistle.

Could be popular , hard or both. Might be known as a bit of a character off the pitch too. Some stories might be more folklore than fiction.

There was a Dublin player in the 70s, a squad player, liked to socialise. I don't remember his name, was mentioned in Humphries great book Dublin v Kerry. Whatever Humphries failings were the man wrote some good sports books. This player was a bit put out that he didn't make the panel. Apparently after a match the Dubs were having dinner and looked up to see their former colleague knocking on the skylight! Cult stuff.

Yeah I think Ryaner would have been fairly popular at times. Tremendous heart and gave it his all. Made the most of limited enough ability as a footballer. He probably would've been better off hurling imo.

I know who you are talking about Greenandred! He is still talked about in awe :-) But, like you I cannot recall his name at the moment. I'll check the book when I get home.

A colossus of a full back who said very little & lived life marching to his own tune which he does to this day.

Ja fallon. His performance in the 2nd half of the 1998 final single handedly persuaded me to take up gaelic football.
