Do Kerry have a fear of Ulster?

no issue with dubs at all just pointing out to kingdom the true origin of the poster in question as would be unusual for somebody from roscommon to slagging off kerry and more likely to come from a direct rival

No I don't think Kerry have a fear of Ulster teams, but I don't think most Ulster teams have any fear of Kerry either.

Kerry have had a bad run against Ulster very strongest team on a few occassions since 2002, however they have still been capable of chewing up and spitting out any lesser team from Ulster. So that definitely shows no fear of Ulster in general.

I strongly disagree with the original post on Cork, as they were in my opinion either the strongest or joint strongest team in Ireland between 2007 and 2011/2012. Outstanding team of physically impossing players, who still had superb pace.

Oh, you've changed your tune all of a sudden, nothing wrong with the Dubs now I see.Glad you recognized your mistake with the generalizations and of course assumed she was a Dub. Typical, as you obviously do have something against Dubs and were equally quick to assume I was one too.Small county , small mind.
Notice you didn't answer Handy's question either.Or maybe you just didn't read it again .

i agree legend...cork looked like they were going to walk away with the 2009 final initially but kerry responded brilliantly and beat a very good side at their peak which they often dont get enough credit for..people will always remember the first 3 finals though for their soft nature

when was i against the dubs?...strange that the normal dublin posters dont feel i have anything against the dubs really..you clearly do have an axe to grind it appears..'small county, small mind'?..somebody really loves making generalisations yet being offended by them dont they?...it seems the small mindedness is only coming from the one side as you have resorted to petty name calling now over what you see as a generalisation...bit over the top dont you think?..seem bit obsessed with me at this stage have you made many posts besides related to me?..relax

no point continuing a silly debate with posters only interested in attacking others and name calling so i will leave this here as you only seem interested in accusing me of things which i am not

I think this final will suit Kerry nicely. Donegal possibly played their final against Dublin and with the way they dispatched them with ease many expect them to go on and lift Sam.

Kerry could not ask for a better set of circumstances to be facing any team in an All Ireland Final and will be in with a very good chance of winning it even though I still think McGuiness will steer Donegal home but it will not be handy.

Sure, with Kerry's fear of Ulster, another soft Ulster All-Ireland appears to be on the cards.

2000 Kerry - Galway
2001 Galway - Meath

2003 Tyrone - Armagh

2011 Gilroy - Kerry

Exluding Ulster wins over a team fearing Ulster and wins over Cork and Mayo, these must be the only hard fought for wins of the century so far?

2010 gets excluded as well. I was in Páidí Ó'Sé's pub in Ventry the following summer. A group of lads from Cork were tying to wind up Páidí.
Cork lads - Páidí what do make of Cork's win last year?
Páidí - Do you know what lads, I have to take my hat off to Cork. They won an All-Ireland without beating Kerry!!

Gas man Páidí. The Cork lads weren't long finishing up their drinks!! :D

1651659 i would argue jon that armagh were more impressive in ulster in 2005 or 2004 considering the opponents bet and margin of victory and so on...i felt they were at their best in 2004 or 2005 anyway even better than 2002...handymoran is a dub kingdom what do you expect? [/b]

I take it your from Kerry , if not some serious sucking up going on, i think you thought you were sherlock Holmes there solving some mystery.keep up the good work :)

Kerry don't faer anyone but they have a major dislike for teams who beat them ie tyrone and Dublin , you will be always flavour of the month down in Kerry once they are beating you mayo and galway would be very popular in kerry for example, they are bad losers maybe that's one of the reasons why they are so good?

Kerry have no fear of anyone for goodness sake! As a team, they're always far too proud and professional for nonsense like that. The games v Tyrone were close, hard-fought encounters. You could only say Kerry had a mental problem had they collapsed (in the way Mayo did to them in 04 and 06). But they never did. Narrowly beaten on the day in a couple of ferocious encounters does not suggest fear to me.

I would say that Kerry's biggest and only fear is fear of failing and they're probably more afraid of failing than any other team in Ireland. That's the only 'fear' they have; it's a fear of letting their county down and it's a very good 'fear' to have.

And yes, Armagh 06 were on the slide - 05 they were the second best team in Ireland and we beat them very narrowly, but that was it for them. Still a good team in 06, but well beaten in the end by a very hard-hitting Kerry team who certainly showed they knew how to win a tough game.

I think the southern counties are overly deferential to Kerry, many are beaten before they take the field. Ulster counties are a bit more, I don't know, pig headed I guess, and take pride in sticking it to Kerry. Having watched Kerry playing Ulster teams over the years I've always felt they were too easily thrown off their natural game when the Ulster teams really got into their faces. Nothing against Donegal but I'd love Kerry to win next week just to get this Ulster monkey off their back.

Ok, well our opponents firstly were there on merit. Tyrone in fairness raised the bar for intensity in 2003. There was a fierce determination in Kerry to win in '04. Mayo were the unfortunate county to be at the receiving end of a fiercely determined team. Many forget in '05 that Kerry were dominating the early stages of the final. Many prefer to ignore the fact that the dominant Gooch was given a poke in the eye. The Gooch influence was then gone out of the game and Tyrone got back into the game. '06 then poor old Mayo again all set for another final came up against a Kerry team fiercely determined. The result was the same as '04.

Joe Brolly recalls that the day after the '06 final, he was interviewed on Radio Kerry. He was expecting a county buzzing after winning an All-Ireland. He was surprised that there was only two main questions. 1) Was Star the player of the year? 2) Would Kerry beat Tyrone the following year?

In '07 the Tyrone challenge never materialised. There was nothing Kerry could do about it. We came up against our Munster rivals in the All-Ireland final. It was a first ever All-Munster final. As ye can imagine with our lot, they were in no mood to be turned over by Cork with all our history against them. To come up against a local rival in a final is a difficult task. As in '04 and '06, Kerry's fierce determination blew their opponents out of the water.

In '08 then we got to another final, attempting to win a 3 in-a-row. Tyrone in fairness won that game fair and square. We had no complaints and took defeat like men and moved on. It's worth noting however, being in there on All-Ireland final day battling to the last to try and claim a third All-Ireland on the trot is some going. I had nothing but pride for the efforts put in by our lads. To the victors goes the spoils.

'09 then was the battle for team of the decade. If Tyrone drew level on 4, they would claim the title based on head-to-head. Tyrone however lost out to our Munster rivals in the semi-finals. We then as everyone knows went on to claim a 5th All-Ireland of the decade, winning a fiercely contested final. Ciarrai abu!

legendzxix,
Some vey good points and i dont think there is ever a handy AllIreland won, a team has to train hard all year for every eventuality and keep focus whatever the opposition. To do back to backs and then get to the final for a third year when every one is gunning for you is some achievment and
shows what a great team Kerry were. Tyrone too were a great team in the noughties and i suppose it depends on which side of the fence you are as to who had the better achievments or was team of the decade. Tyrone could easily point to circumstances beyond there control , coupled with injuries and a tough Ulster as reasons for needing 1 and a 2 year break in between winning there titles or Maybe like Donegal there system and work rate doesnt allow for it to be effective 2 years in a row with the toll it takes on players bodies. Donegal were similar in 2012 and needed 2013 to recover. Funny ye were opposition in semi 2012 and lost to Donegal and are now in the final 2014 against Donegal . Ye had a break last year just like Donegal so i guess its all to play for. 2 fresh teams. both playing similar systems.
No Excuses :)

I've never seen Kerry supporters so wound up like I saw in Limerick. Grown men roaring at every decision against them and screaming for every score. I heard a Kerry man in his 50s, in front of me in the city terrace, shouting angrily after Kerry goaled. I made out he said something like "We are the aristocracy" with a mixture of fierce pride and more than a little anger. It seems he was a bit upset at this talk of a great Dublin team, he wanted Kerry to get a run at the Dubs? Seemed that might have motivated the Kerry team enough to get to the final? Kerry supporters please comment

Telling this Kerry team that they have a poor record against Ulster teams will surely motivate them too.

My own, very simplistic, view is that Donegal have a great team. Well drilled by McGuinness with plans A to Z in their pockets. Kerry, as every year from the first ball was kicked, have the best footballers. They can think on their feet cos they know they have the skills to get them out of any situations. Under Fitzmaurice they have a great team ethic right down to the last man in the squad. It'll be a fascinating game but if it's close with 10 minutes left I'd pick Kerry to win. Should be a cracker.

still think donegal will win narrowly but should be a great game and could potentially be a very strong kerry side for the next few years once they get a few more defenders

'94 Down - County Dublin
'95 Dublin Region - Tyrone

'05 Tyrone - Kerry

'08 Tyrone - Kerry

'10 Cork - Down

'12 Donegal - Mayo

Well here we go. Ulster All-Ireland finalists to their credit have a great record in All-Ireland finals. It's not all down to Kerry. Ulster counties don't always make finals either. They've obviously been stopped some where along the line.

The replay was a battle. It took a massive effort to get through and a degree of luck. I didn't expect the capital to make the final so I can't really anwser any question on that.

You're simplistic view is spot on. Donegal have a great team. They will have plans A to Z coming into the game. Many Donegal posters on here to their credit have articulated very well the challenge ahead of Kerry. It has the makings of a fascinating game. If it's close with 10 minutes to go it can go either way. Obviously I'll have an optimistic view on the end result from there so I'll say no more!

Don't think fear comes in to it. In fact if fear comes in to any side when they look at the opposition then I am afraid you are playing the wrong sport. There are teams who give others too much respect and that can have a bearing on the outcome but that's not the same as fear. As for Kerry losing 5/6 finals against Ulster opposition - could it not just be a case that they came up against better opposition on the day?

I think your spot on there, we did come up against better sides in those finals we lost to northern opposition .
