Royaldunne Think you're doing the 96 team a disservice the way you present them as no hopers only brought to the top by a good manager. The Meath team that started the AI final that year had 5 All Ireland senior medals, 31 Leinster SFCs and 15 Div. 1 league titles between them, and only 3 of them hadnt won an all Ireland at either minor, U21 or senior. In comparison, the Donegal team that won in 2012 hadnt an All Ireland between them at any level (unless you count Paddy McBrearty's vocational schools medal). Kerrys numerous all ireland victories during the mid to late 2000s were a surprise considering that after 2003 people were sayng that Armagh and Tyrones new defensive systems would leave the kingdom trailing in their wake.. joncarter (Galway) - Posts: 2692 - 10/09/2014 16:36:32 1650673 Link 0 |

Ah sure look it s goldrick, everything is relative in some respect. At the end of the day, there is no doubting Donegal are going to be a difficult opponent. In the context of being in transition, not many expected the Kingdom to make the final. It's hard to have any qualms over the odds being offered by the bookies. Everyone was saying the team that beat the capital will win the All-Ireland. I haven't seen anything for that view to change and in the context of that view, it will be a shock if it were not to happen. legendzxix (Kerry) - Posts: 7876 - 10/09/2014 18:49:40 1650717 Link 0 |
"Kerry were rank outsiders for both semi-finals. Fact." joeteor (Donegal) - Posts: 218 - 10/09/2014 19:27:55 1650728 Link 0 |
Nodody would have tipped Down at the start of the 1991 championship - in those days Connacht and Ulster teams usually did not cause much trouble for the Leinster or Munster champions, with the odd exception. I also doubt that anybody outside Galway would have given us much of a chance of going all the way at the start of the 1998 season. Every other winner for the last 35 years or more would have been amongst the favourites at the start of the season (although Donegal were rank outsiders going into the final in 1992). Not rank outsiders nor are they a team in transition. Obvious to anyone who wants to know. It's the usual tune in this case. SLLY (Dublin) - Posts: 463 - 10/09/2014 20:40:35 1650759 Link 0 |
