Last shock All-Ireland SFC winning team?

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

Royaldunne Think you're doing the 96 team a disservice the way you present them as no hopers only brought to the top by a good manager. The Meath team that started the AI final that year had 5 All Ireland senior medals, 31 Leinster SFCs and 15 Div. 1 league titles between them, and only 3 of them hadnt won an all Ireland at either minor, U21 or senior. In comparison, the Donegal team that won in 2012 hadnt an All Ireland between them at any level (unless you count Paddy McBrearty's vocational schools medal).

Kerrys numerous all ireland victories during the mid to late 2000s were a surprise considering that after 2003 people were sayng that Armagh and Tyrones new defensive systems would leave the kingdom trailing in their wake..

kerry would always be regarded as one of the top 5 or 6 for all-ireland success. So they would NEVER be "rank outsiders"
so let's discount Kerry. I think Donegal surprised people in 2011 (but they didn't WIN sam). so people weren't shocked when they won in 2012..alot of people would have tipped them because they had developed a style of play that the rest of the country found hard to live with. it is very rare if not non-existent where a team comes from nowhere to win an all-ireland.
the only shocks i remember were Leitrim winning connacht in 1994, clare winning munster in 1992 and Louth winning Leinster in 2010.

I thought Meath won Leinster in 2010.

cant say Donegal or Kerry are a shock. they were written off (well i have always stated kerry could win it!!) .
Armagh in 2002 was knocking on the door for a good while saocant really say they were a shock.
perhaps Galways in 98 or Down in 91 would be the closest to a true shock in winning an all ireland.

as for shocks Clare in 92 and Leitrim in 95 (i think) would be what I would associate as a shock in winning their provincial championships

That's a fair point. Armagh and Tyrone were supposed to dominate for the rest of the decade but Kerry responded brilliantly to the gauntlet thrown down and claimed 4 of the next 6 All-Irelands.

I'm not sure why someone is accusing me of putting in excuses. Kerry were rank outsiders for the Munster final. Fact. Kerry were rank outsiders for both semi-finals. Fact. This current squad, as every knows by now which is in transition, have performed very well so far to make the All-Ireland final against all the odds. For that they deserve great credit. At the same time, the group of players and management are very much aware of the currency on which they will be judged.

ah for goodness sake man, you don't know what rank outsider means. Kerry are a division 1 , themselves and cork have contested nearly every munster final that ever was. since the back door and the seeding in munster, that means you are automatically in to the last
twelve. now Carlow,Waterford,London,Wicklow,Antrim, clare,Limerick,Tipperary,Leitrim,Sligo,Offally,Louth,Westmeath,Fermanagh,Cavan,Roscommon,Longford,Wexford, galway,Down, laois and Armagh.. these would be have been "rank outsiders" the likes of : Meath,Kildare,Derry,Tyrone would have been "outsiders" and Dublin,Kerry,Cork,Mayo,Donegal and Monaghan would have been the front-runners.

Ah sure look it s goldrick, everything is relative in some respect. At the end of the day, there is no doubting Donegal are going to be a difficult opponent. In the context of being in transition, not many expected the Kingdom to make the final. It's hard to have any qualms over the odds being offered by the bookies. Everyone was saying the team that beat the capital will win the All-Ireland. I haven't seen anything for that view to change and in the context of that view, it will be a shock if it were not to happen.

7/4 isnt a rank outsider

Nodody would have tipped Down at the start of the 1991 championship - in those days Connacht and Ulster teams usually did not cause much trouble for the Leinster or Munster champions, with the odd exception. I also doubt that anybody outside Galway would have given us much of a chance of going all the way at the start of the 1998 season. Every other winner for the last 35 years or more would have been amongst the favourites at the start of the season (although Donegal were rank outsiders going into the final in 1992).

Donegal's odds for the championship have been high all summer due to the capital being on their side of the draw. Once Donegal impressively dealth with that obstacle, their odds have been brought to an expected low level. In the context of the semi-finalists, Kerry were the rank outsiders.

Not rank outsiders nor are they a team in transition. Obvious to anyone who wants to know. It's the usual tune in this case.
