The end of the greatest Mayo team of all time?

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

But that was the greatest team of all time we were up against jimbo. Sure we hadn't a hope. We were told only 2 of our players would make their starting line up. No shame in losing in that situation and we couldn't be accused of bottling it.

Incidentally, Donegal were told only 2 of their players would start for Dublin also...

Certainly the end of the unluckiest.
Remind me of mid-00's Waterford hurlers, great side who kept just missing out.

Unlucky you say...

Some say you make your own luck...

Twas very unlucky leaving their best player on a one legged player alright... fierce unlucky that...

Jimbo, what makes you think this team is finished? The average age of the starting team on Saturday was 26.5. With Alan Dillon being the oldest at 31. This tesm is far from finished. A change in manager is what was needed. It was clear Horan brought us as far as we could go. Fair enough, the team has a lot of mileage on the clock but when your as hungry ad they are to win an All Ireland, mileage doesn't matter. Sure, Saturday will hurt the players but they will use this hurt to motivate themselves next year. If the right manager comes in i can guarantee you that Mayo will win the All ireland in the next two years.

But you said JH shouldn't have left therefore implying that its an oppurtunity missed and that they won't win it with a new manager

Not at all jimbo. Being relieved of the bottlers tag was good enough for me. It is time for someone else to carry that can, and there is one outstanding candidate.

Mayoaresavage, if using the hurt of losing to motivate you actually worked ye would have won Sam by now.
Mayo are world class bottlers, I expect to see a Kilkenny team win Sam before ye.

Good attempt at deflection there master but until Mayo actually win an AI they'll always be the GAA's resident bottlers
Good effort though

Nah man

We weren't the ones with one foot in the final

Only to throw it away

Sure man... Listen...

Even if Dublin had of won 2 in a row

You'd be calling it tarnished... so win or lose

You'd still be sticking the boot in... so really whatever you have to say is completely redundant

2 in 3 years will have to do

What are you on about JMK, it seems all of Kerry have just about written off their team 'in transition'

Anyone who knows anything about the sacrifice and effort these Mayo players have but in over the past four years will know they are not bottlers. They and we won't give up, the snide remarks and lazy analysis can continue all they want but it won't change the fact Mayo will keep coming back again and again.

I didn't see them bottle any thing this year or last year either, they give us some of the best football games we have seen in years, little things didn't go there way but its shows how tight the top four teams are and any one of them could win Sam .

I think mayo will continue to be in the top 4 teams next year and depending on who gets the manager's job may just get them over the line.

I don't doubt the effort and sacrifice this current crop of Mayo footballers have made, and for the record I don't think they are bottlers. I also hold James Horan in high regard, he is a top drawer manager who made Mayo consistantly a top 2/3 team and a team to be feared and respected.

I said earlier this Summer that Mayo looked tired, or certainly not as lively as the previous 2 years. They key men or leaders such as Aidan O'Shea, Cillian O'Connor, Keith Higgin's, Kevin McLoughlin etc were still performing and driving/dragging Mayo on, however Mayo seemed to be lacking their trademark Intensity. I felt this was more to do with fatigue than lack of talent or skill.

Look everybody knows how unlucky Mayo have been over the last few decades, but Its only a matter of time to Mayo finally get the right combination and win the All Ireland. And when they do, I reckon their will be a flood of All Ireland titles heading to the West.
You definitely have the core of an All Ireland winning team, maybe a bit of fresh blood will refresh the whole thing.

Couldn't agree more, Gary. This Mayo side have looked a bit leg-weary all year, from the league semi-final against Derry to the last ten minutes last Saturday. They emptied the tank and just didn't have anything more to give on the day.

They will be back next year, as it's not a particularly ageing side, and maybe the extra month's rest will do them some good next season, as it did for Donegal this year. But fresh blood does need to be injected into the starting XV, as it was clear that Horan didn't particularly trust his bench, especially in his final year. I'd be in favour of giving the likes of Adam Gallagher, Diarmuid O'Connor and Conor Ó Shea and even Jason Gibbons a proper run in the league this year, and to call up a few of the minor and U-21s of recent years.

As for the usual "bottlers" tag being bandied about here, it's nonsense. This particular Mayo side have shown plenty of bottle in games this year, against Roscommon, Cork and Kerry. The fact is that we have a shaky full-back line, and the way that Mayo play exposes them. Word has gotten out, so even when Mayo build up a lead, they are always vulnerable to conceding goals. Time for a tactical re-think from the new manager.

Instructive enough that it's mostly Dublin posters coming out with this stuff, probably to deflect from their side's own failure this year.

Mayo have nothing to be ashamed of. Just keep running into better teams on the day.
