Who is the best footballer in Ireland right now?

DLGael, where did I say that this is what I thought? You seem to be missing the point totally.

Best footballer for me is someone who could play anywhere from Half back to full forward and still have a major influence on game. Therefore neck and neck are Flynn and MM. Flynn shades it ahead of Connolly as he has more defensive abilities. Flynn is so consistent its unbelieveable.

Keith Higgins by a mile. Consistently the outstanding player in the land for the last eight years or so. Has nailed down his third all star.

1646868 Paul Flynn or Diarmuid Connolly......

They didn't look so great when Donegal were tearing the dubs apart on Sunday.

Paul Flynn , Diarmuid Connolly , Cluxton , O'Donoghooe , David Moran , Keith Higgins and Cillian O'Connor are the elite footballers in Ireland at the minute

Has to be Connolly. Don't think we ve ever had it as good in terms of contenders. This is biased maybe but I rate Ross munnelly and colm o Neill ahead of ciillian o Connor. Ross has stood out for years on a mediocre team. Connolly has it all though

great to see most counties going for there own, i would have to say diarmuid connolly was outstanding on sunday as he has been all season. even when we were on top. p flynn had an awesome first have scored the some of the best points ever in croke park. right Michael Murphy awesome player that man has sacrificed his own game in order for the team full forward half forward mid field half back and fullback. not many other player have the whole all round game he has. not forgetting colm cooper either

We made Ryan Mchugh look like a superstar I don't know how good he is yet, no Donegal forward can be judged after the Dublin game it was too easy for them and we played right into there hands(read what bonner said about our defending) best footballer in Ireland is James O Donoghue for me the man is incredible

You were telling us that Dublin had the best back line in the country, with ROC the greatest full back of all time. Why the change of heart?

It's between the 2 to be honest.
Murphy to lift Sam, O'Donohue to be POTY, McHugh YPOTY IMO

There are so many great footballers on the scene at the minute,I think Michael Murphy is an exceptional talent, also James O'Donoghue,
another thing about these lads is they are so level headed and grounded,I'm sure there are plenty of great players who don't see the limelight,
It's a great time for us now in Donegal and we are going to enjoy it,
For me Michael Murphy is the best all round player in the country, but I am biased I suppose.
Martin Mc Hugh got a lot of stick when he said JOD was better than the Gooch,or words to that effect, I think JOD is almost unplayable,if the man stays injury free and Fitzmaurice continues developing the current Kerry team I think JOD will go down as one of the best of all time,
probably better than the Gooch in my opinion and that takes some doing.

Player of the year is a different debate to best footballer in country! POTY will be JOD, unless Murphy scores 2-5 in final.

I think players move in and out of the top 15 from season to season, as the All Stars normally reflect. Its really hard to select one single best player, picking 15 is a little easier. I done it along the 5 main lines and actual positions.
t
Full Forwards:
Michael Murphy, James O'Donoghue, Cillian O'Connor.

Half forwards: Diarmuid Connolly, Paul Flynn, Aidan O'Shea

Midfielder: Neil Gallagher, David Moran,

Half backs: Frank McGlynn, Keith Higgins, Ryan McHugh

Full back:
Paddy McGrath, Neil McGee, Eamon McGee

Goalkeeper: Paul Durkin, mainly due goals conceded and his kicking range and kicking variety this year. Still a close call with the other top 3 keepers.

BENCH: Stephen Cluxton, Lee Keegan, Kieran McKeever, Karl Lacey, Andy Mallon, Mark Lynch, Kevin McManamon, MD MacAuley, Kevin McLoughlin, Jamie Clarke, Bernard Brogan.

Paul Flynn for me, sensational player and what's more, seem's like a very decent fellow off the pitch too.

I think Dermot Connolly is absolutely superb, and to be honest I think himself or Paul Flynn will be the next Dublin captain.

Lee Keegan not in that back 6??
Best all-round back in the country IMO.

Bernard Brogan had a shocker at the weekend, but is better than Cillian O'Connor, despite O'Connor becoming much more rounded this year.

Ryan McHugh is a forward. .

Paddy McGrath in there but no Lacey?

Agree with the rest, but only because the thread says "right now"

Depends on who wins the All-Ireland. If Kerry win it will be O'Donoghue , if Donegal win it will be Murphy.
Flawed system but there you go.

In an ideal world David Moran and Tommy Walsh were going to be the players Kerry were going to be built around from 2010 onwards. Walsh got offered the contract in Australia. Moran didn't get a contract out there and looked set to become Darragh Ó'Sé's replacement. As everyone knows he suffered two cruciate injuries and it's only this year now we are seeing the best from him.

I can't comment on the best player. I will be biased so what's the point?

What would make the thread more interesting if you had to nominate a player not from your own county.
