James Horan deserves great credit, considering the state of the Mayo team when he took over after 2010 he done an incredible job and can be counted as unfortunate not to be an All Ireland winning manager. As for replacements I don't see Kevin McStay taking it for the same reasons as Colm O'Rourke hasn't managed Meath, the Sunday Game is too good a gig. Tommy Lyons??? I wouldn't let him within an asses roar of that team and the same goes for Tommy Carr, a journeyman who has done nothing of note no matter where he laid his hat. Pat Holmes and Liam McHale have decent claims but I reckon last years minor winning manager Gilvarry would be a worthy replacement, it's an important decision for Mayo and one they must plan carefully

Horan did a great job with the team, but was never able to make the right decisions during a game, my man for the job would be Liam McHale

Donie Buckley to step in to the big job? A la EO'S with Tipp?

Could work if he takes a few lads that know Mayo football with him... The likes of Peadar Gardiner, David Brady, David Heaney maybe? Ciaran McDonald as forwards coach (or can that stuff even be coached?)!

Sorry to see James go. He dragged Mayo back from the brink of mediocrity to become a side with a real sense of self-belief and potential. Whoever takes over will inherit a side with a solid foundation for ultimate success. James will be a hard act to follow.

Enda Gilvarry should be given the job. Has delivered both at club and underage level. Knows the county board and how to deal with them. Has had the rub of the green occasionally which is important to a certain degree(better to be born lucky than rich). Commands great respect within the county for his achievements at minor level. And most importantly has managed a Mayo team to AI glory. It should be a no-brainer...

Hard to know who should get the job, we have a massive problem all over the pitch, we have 3 quality backs Higgins, Keegan and Boyle, 2 midfielders in the O'Shea brothers, forwards McLoughlin, Doherty and O'Connor and i'm afraid thats it. New manager needs to find new talent

End of an era. Andy and Alan will probably go too. I don't know about McStay. A good club manager, not so sure he'd make the step-up. I'd prefer Liam McHale.

GNR, you are ruling out mcstay for one criteria, and suggesting McHale, who doesn't fit that criteria either. I think mcstay would be a good bet. He is an intelligent fella, who has great ability to see things from various angles objectively. He is also a deep thinker and understands the mayo psyche - an important criteria for any successful manager. He also strikes me as a very fair and honest guy, something players will always respond to.

I wouldn't go for pat holmes personally. Maughan? He achieved massively with a lesser set of players.

McStay in pole position, did a great job with Brigids. My ideal replacement just took up the reigns at Armagh so that won't happen.

I know McStay has all of those qualities. But do you think McHale is lacking in some of them? I remember McStay rrom his playi g days, a stylish forward who had a tendency to be a bit greedy in his early county days. McHale is well liked in Mayo fotball and Irish sport. Has many qualities, was a ciunty selector before, arguably, played at a higher level than McStay in a longer career and has also coached within and outside the county. Maybe McStay as manager and McHale as selector/coach could work? It has been rumoured that it might be both of them.

I cannot see McHale or McStay being offered the job.
Could do worse than Donie buckley.

It was very disappointing to see James Horan quit. I'll get slated for this, but it shows yet again a Mayo man throwing in the towel before the job is done. Horan should have spent this winter fuming, anger burning through him, plotting how to get this team to win an All-Ireland. What players are needed, what players aren't needed, what tactical changes are needed, what planning needed to be done. See the job through. Don't quit.

Sadly, he did. And I can't see Mayo being a challenger now.

Was at the Mayo post All Ire meal last year where he committed to giving one more year. He was true to his word. He obviously feels he has done all he can. He raised the performance level of the Mayo team. He has done the County a great service. Enjoy your retirement James.

I would totally disagree with that lazy remark. No Mayo man threw in the towel on Sat, player or coach. Horan gave four years of his life to Mayo and that is not counting those as a player. The man has a very young family and a very demanding day job with Coca Cola. Everyone in Mayo knew this year was his last and the man owes nothing to Mayo football.

Agreed, I have great admiration for him but two huge errors will define his time for me & it is the same error on both occasions.

Going one on one with Murphy in 2012 & going one on one with Donaghy in 2014.
