Mayo lack a marquee forward?

(Oldest Posts First) - Go To The Latest Post

There are good forwards and there are forwards that step up to the plate when it matters most in the third sunday in September. These are not the same thing.

Bernard Brogan, Michael Murphy, Daniel Goulding, Peter Canavan, Gooch, Oisin Mconville, Sean Cavanagh, Star are recent examples of the later - Kevin Mac even

Whilst they are good forwards the Dillons, O Connors, Morans, o Shea's are examples of the former and have had chances to prove otherwise and not delivered when things were really in the melting pot.

Moran has started 1 All Ireland final. He scored 1-2 from play. O'Connor played last year with a barely intact shoulder and put in a manful shift, he's also still just 22. The O'Shea's were not as bad as some claim. I can agree on Dillon, great player but has never done it in September despite 4 chances. He's on an upward curve this year after a slow start though so if Mayo can get past Kerry (big IF) it might be his year to produce something...

Like many have said Cillian O'Connor is top class and would even make the Dublin team.

Whatever about 2012 when Donegal got a dream start last years game was there for the taking, Brogan did the taking.
You can quote stats and I'm sure they stack up but of the tens of thousands of gaa players only a dozen forwards ( less if Donegal are playing ) get the chance every year and one or two a year take it. - that's marquee

Mayo will never with anytime with this set of fowards, Cillian O'Connor top class foward. Diarmuid o'Connor has potential. McLoughlin, Doherty, Freeman not consistent or ruthless enough in Croke Park

HughHunt24 - You don't know what's going on. Tommy Conroy won't be in the Mayo team next year for reasons outside of football his form is gone and has had injuries too.

Highhunt is right doh the reason Mayo haven't won Sam is cause there lacking a marquee forward, there keeper Higgins half back line and midfield is the reason they've been in finals n Semi's but the reason they haven't won on the big days is cause they lack a marquee forward sadly COC lacks pace to be a great, now in saying that Mayo are on the handy side of the draw next year so I'd never right them off but to beat Dublin or Kerry they'll need to find a marquee forward imo.

_________

Def for frees anyway - no one better

But would be interesting to see if his overall standard from play would improve being surrounded by more top class forwards

Mayo supporters have not much to look forward to in 2016 going
with the same group of players you get the same result.
For Mayo to get over the line they need as stated by other posters
find good forwards who can take the game by the scruff of the neck when
its there to be won i dont think there is anyone in Mayo capable of that

This and the fact that Mayo have a habit of conceding 2 or 3 goals in All Ireland semi or finals the last 5 years.

Aye, throwing in 3 injury prone young lads will win them Sam for sure...

Mayo have been very close. They tend to score enough to win games. ispeakwisdom and jimbodub are on the money- they don't have Dublin's strength in depth and they concede too many goals.

Mfkerry states that " Mayo supporters have not much to look forward in 2016 with the same group of players you get the same result". I think that is an arrogant and a condescending statement. Then goes on to say they need good forwards in order to get them over the line, as if they can go out and quickly find replacements. Mayo are expected to have two of their forwards Diarmuid O'Connor and Aidan O'Shea selected as All-Stars this year and Cillian O'Connor who is another top class forward and free-taker, that is hardly a bad starting point going forward next year. A new year will hopefully unearth some new talent for Mayo. I think this Mayo team are very dedicated and talented and it may take very little extra to get them over the line. Mayo have been in the top two or three teams in the last last four years, it takes a very committed group to maintain that position. I believe this group of players with the support of the county board will now get the manager they desire and this will motivate and inspire them for that elusive all-Ireland.
Dublin will be attempting back to back All-Irelands next year, something that no team under the same manager has achieved since Billy Morgan did so with Cork in 1990 and with the likelihood of many retirements in Kerry, who will be in transition, this could be Mayo's opportunity. There will be no excuse now for this best Mayo team in many years when they get their desired Manager. Ar scath a chéile a mhaireas na daoine.

stMayo lack a backbone. If there was medals for 1st to 5th Mayo would come 6th.

Hi everyone, long time reader first time poster. Mayo don't lack backbone, they fail to score at vital times and concede at the worst times in big matches. No killer instinct but saying no back-bone is a little harsh I would say. Yes they do need some better forwards.
