I remember that game well, very enjoyable despite the horrendous conditions.

Much prefer Saturday games in general. Would welcome the final being changed to a Saturday.

Knew I'd get this response as I posted.
That had crossed my mind hurlingdub.
But I'm thinking of culchies in general.
I know you're expecting a coronation at the end of September but I'm led to believe that the final is going ahead.

How about 9 am on a Saturday, the substance abusers would get more time in the pub. Seriously, Sunday's are better, and if your county makes it (which you have nothing to worry about) you can take Monday off and recover.

again all the people are looking for is to copy soccer and do what they do
they change from wednesday night to saturday and now all of a sudden its get with the times this
we are in the 21st century bla bla bla
gaa has always been a sunday game (pardon the pun)
atmosphere at saturday evening championship matches are terrible
now some want the all ireland finals to go that way.
you have a whole build up for the weekend to go and have your drinking sessions
god knows half the people that go to the pub before the matches dont even know what they are watching as it is
why should the gaa change to suit these amadans.
sunday has always been the gaa big day and long may it continue

whats wrong with pointing the obvious
its a sports event, if you cant enjoy it without alcohol it says more about the type of person you are than the event

This thread doesn't apply to people from my county seeing we have NEVER played in an AI Final. :-(

Only busting your chops Cleatus! It will be Sunday this year whoever is in it.

Hurling final replay last year was brilliant atmosphere but I'd still say people would rather have gotten back home at reasonable hour to enjoy or commiserate.

I don't know hill I think the athmosphere at Saturday evening games is pretty good we play a lot of our club fixtures on Saturday evenings and it works out great, fellas can go out and have a few beers after and sleep in on Sunday and enjoy their weekend some bit.

Why are Sundays better?
Why should you have to take a day off work to recover? Why not have games on a Saturday so people can have a drink and enjoy that and not have to lose out on day's work?
Games on Saturday evenings better for tv crowds than Sunday afternoons IMO as well

This isn't about copying soccer. You just see negative in anything that may have some origin in another sport its ridiculous.
GAA has always been a Sunday Game but that doesn't mean it should always be or that it has to be.
Atmosphere at Saturday games are not terrible. Saturday games still have a big build up...

Ormond

How many Gaa matches do you go to at inter county level
You don't strike me the type that travels to croker for big matches so in all due respect I go to all Dublin's matches and most other games in croker during the year and the atmosphere at the all Ireland quarter finals on Saturday evenings I have been saying for the last 4 years now has been way below the Sunday championship matches.
Saturday also us a busy working day so limits the amount of people who can attend a match and makers it difficult for county's to travel long distance.

I go to enough.
You live in Dublin so its much easier for you to attend games in Croker.
Saturday is a working day but for many to go to games in CP on a Sunday Afternoon they've to take the whole day to get to games and then face into a working week the following day. That is not the case with Saturday games.
Saturday games even with long travel people have sunday off so can sleep in and not worry about it. works well in other sports across a large number of sports. Whats not to like about it?

I prefer attending Saturday evening matches for the reason Ormond mentioned above.

Anytime Offaly play a match away from home on a Sunday I took the next day off work as I'd be tired when I got home from the match.I'd wonder how would attendances be affected if more matches were played on Saturday evenings.Saturday evening league matches always seem to get good crowds.

well use to it by now but yeah Sunday Games are a nightmare.
I generally use public transport to get up to the Dublin so in most case of Sunday Games I struggle to get back in time for bus/train. This puts a damper on the game for me so I have recently started to take Mondays off so I can celebrate in the crowd and then meet up with family and friends to discuss the game.

Im in a job where I can take time off when I want but most people aren't.

I agree that a lot of people work on a Saturday which yes means Saturday isn't ideal either but it suits for more people than the Sunday I think.

People seen to forget how big Ireland is to travel from up north to Dublin takes a long time.

avonali, I don't know about that, the reality is farmers do have to work on Saturdays, but they have to work on Sundays too... I agree with the idea of Saturday games, and not just from the point of view of drinking. People can choose to stay overnight and make a day out of it, without having to take time off work. Having to travel across the country is tough and as a young lad there was nothing I disliked more than the long trek home after the match. It made the day so long. To be rushing around after the match, maybe having to skip out before the end to beat the traffic, shouldn't be the status quo to watch our national game in the flesh. Saturday games would be far more user-friendly for people.
