aidan64, sure they were a well beaten docket by us long before the full time whistle in the 2009 Semi final. I enjoyed that victory immensely after 2001. I swear myself and the folks must have been the only Kerry people still in Croker at full time in 2001, real bad day at the office. And yet to this day at every championship game I still see some one wearing that accursed Kerry white jersey!!! I thought they would have all be ritually burned after that horrid day.

2001 was a shock alright but not as much of a shock as 2003.
probably the most disappoint one for me was 2008 where to me this was a Tyrone team gone past their peak as a team but had some outstanding individuals. We went into the game in shock and fear why Kerry wing forwards Sheehan and Brosnan would be the ones marking Davy Harte and Philip Jordan Tyrone's strongest line.
Tyrone's half back line destroyed us that day

This year against Dublin was very bad,but a few years ago think it was 2008 against Limerick was much worse! We lost by 9 points, but were 20 points down at one stage. We beat Limerick the following year at least though..

The Hermit

Little did people know how Meath would struggle for the next decade or so after that win against Kerry! I was on holiday at the time and couldn't even see the game,a Dub told me Meath won by 15 points,I honestly thaught he was taking the mickey..

Beaten by 12 points against Laois in 2005 and then by Westmeath in a swamp in Port Laoise the following year by a few. The light never seemed so far away for me!

In big ball it has to be Kerry in 2009. Humiliated from the first minute to the last that day.

Yerra Ziggy it was probably the worst thing to happen to Meath too. Sure ye went into the final cock-sure you were champions in waiting after that display, only to flop a la Kerry in the final. Some witch or sorcerer down here must have cursed ye after the Kerry game because its been a hard decade for Meath football since then.

1977 in Aughrim for Dub hurlers was worst day ever. Beaten by Kildare 3 - 9 to 0 - 9. All their goals came in first ten minutes. We had beaten Galway and Wexford and drawn with Cats in league and just missed league semi final. Disaster would not quite describe it!

Mind you. Kildare had handy team then. Tommy Carew and Dunny. Great players.

The Armagh defeat in 2004 was sickening. We'd beaten the All-Ireland champions Tyrone with 14 men earlier in the competition and felt we could give Armagh a game. They trounced us completely. It was the way they just casually bullied us aswell that made it so galling.

I think that Kildare team ran a very good Wexford team close one of the years Wexford got to the final as well. It's a shame Kildare didn't progress further in the senior championship in later years.

My two worst football (for my 2 counties) would be the 1978 football final and 1979 Monaghan v Kerry semi-final. (Kerry haunted my youth).

It's hard to choose between the Cork defeat in the All-Ireland semi-final in 1993, or the defeats to Kerry in 2004 and 2006. The latter were probably more painful for me, as I was too young to appreciate 1993, whereas I was at the two Kerry finals.

My club have lost a couple of All-Ireland senior club finals without landing the big one, but I'd say the most painful defeat was still a loss in a relegation playoff back in 2001, which meant that they went down to Intermediate for the first and only time. It took five years for them to get back up. Winning the county title for the first time in 20 years this year more than made up for it, though.

Down 2010 semi final
Donegal 2011 qfinal
Dublin any number of times

Most heart-breaking I think was the Meath one in 1991, felt so utterly helpless and desolate. Pick-pocketed at the death of 4 bloody matches.

First (and last) time I cried at a sporting occasion was the '84 final vs Kerry, though Kerry were always ahead there was such a groundswell of palpable momentum with the Dubs and we pulled it back to touching distance. But that great Kerry team knew how to snuff out most fires and they snuffed out the Dubs that day. You need to lose those though to truly appreciate winning. By the following year I was a battle-hardened 12 year old, just in time for the lean years. But '91 was a new horror.

I have to say the most disappointing defeat was last Sunday Killkenny v Limerick. Fantastic match for the conditions. A week on an still so disappointed but so proud to be a Limerick supporter.

'03 against Tyrone. Christ i've never witnessed a worse performance in my life.

If there are any Armagh men out there which one is worse? '04 or '05? I would have thought 2004 because as far as I could see Armagh were the best side in the country. But 2005 has had to be painful as well. That late free from Canavan in a semi final.
