Mayo v Kerry

I must say I was impressed with Mayo today. I didn't fancy them but they showed real character to just keep going with a man down great stuff I'm changing my mind Mayo for the final.

I have to say I thought Mayo did look that bit stronger than Kerry yesterday when they applied themselves. Lee Keegan was foolish to do what he did but under the rules it was a red, Mayo will feel like they left it behind yesterday but I think they might just have enough to get over Kerry the next day out. Also to be fair, well done to Kerry for coming back, it was a thrilling second half and Donaghy proved vital when brought on, great impact sub to have.

Am I the only one who thought Higgins had a terrible game on JOD? JOD scored 1-3 off Higgins and let's be fair Higgins had help aswell from Cunniffe , for me that was JOD best game this year given the circumstances he had to play under with being marked by 3 players at times , for me he was motm. I didn't think O Conor was motm I thought mayo's best player was AOS. Caferky in full back has lost his confidence he's there for the taking every time but he's injured for the replay so is McLaughlin who done his hammer at the end.

Yeah, O'Connor certainly came good in the 2nd half but was way off his game in the first, O'Shea was excellent!

Without O'Shea yesterday, Mayo would have lost.
He was excellent.

Most of O'Connor's scores were from placed balls.

In saying that, I was always felt Mayo would win this game (even at half time & down to 14 men) and when 5pts up with only a few minutes left - they should have.
They will win the replay though. Of that I am sure.

Is their name on SAM this year.??
Apparently the last time they won the All Ireland, they went to a replay in a semi v Kerry.
And they definitely had lots of luck on their side at the end of the game yesterday with O'Donoghue's shot coming off the upright to go wide and then the free with the last kick of the game dropping short...

In the replay the need to attack more - I don't know what the hell Horan was at in the 1st half being so defensive.
Crazy tactic which nearly cost them.
At least he had the good sense to change it in the 2nd half.

Mayo to win the replay by 5pts.

@clondalkindub

I think O'Donoghue put more into that game than any other in the championship. Multiple times he took on Higgins but never managed to get around him, it was an excellent contest between them, but Higgins held him up every time.
Also, harsh to blame Higgins for the goal.

Still think theres a few twists left in the game the next day - Mayo played with fear in the first half again yesterday - they just dont trust their full back line-had three men on Donoghue in the first half and as a result suffered badly round the middle. When they went man on man they blew kerry away - however if they go with that tactic the next day id expect Kerry to get Donaghy in on Cafferky early - as well as having the beating of the full back he would bring an extra dimension to the play of Geaney & Donoghue.
Based on yesterday tho Mayos middle 8 probably have a little too much in the tank for our boys. Again with the six day turnaround, injuries etc it makes it harder to call.

Great game - O'Shea was very impressive, and mayo played a super second half. Sending off was harsh, letter of the law says he had to go but this really needs to be looked at. Maybe the laws should be amended to add 'intent to maliciously injure an opponent' or something. This would allow the ref to use common sense. It turned out that mayo upped their game but it easily could have destroyed it as a contest. Cluxton did something similar in the league. Hopefully Higgins wont be out for the final.

I certainly don't agree. Higgins was MOTM as far as I was concerned. JOD scores came off mistakes from Cafferky and Boyle and one by Higgins. JOD would have ran riot with anyone else on him.

Ya Higgins and the sweeper did a great job holding Jamie to 1:03 , after what iv seen from both teams yesterday neither will beat Dublin but the extra game against an expierenced team like mayo will do our young lads the world of good , Kerry for Sam 2015.

Nevertheless Higgins matched up very well on him. JOD scores mainly came off mistakes by other Mayo backs.

So did cillian o'connor and he was been marked 1 on 1 , a bit of credit for James o'donahue do you think ?

He'd 22 possessions and kicked 1-3 while being marked by 3 Mayo defenders one of them Higgins who I rate as the best man marker in the game. Mayo are the better team but missing 3 key players and a 6 day turnaround for Alan Dillon is a lot to ask from from him to perform as good the next day so I give Kerry a big chance plus it's on in limerick definitely a little advantage to Kerry.

Cillian O Conor was only ok IMO 2 great scores from play but he missed a lot for his standards, Dillon AOS Boyle were way better on the day.

I would have an "only ok" player like him on my team any day of the week. Thought he had a good game yesterday.

Oh Jaysis definitely. JoD is absolutely the best player in the country at the moment. I just thought Higgins deserved more credit and held him up quite well. Higgins was let down by the other backs. Higgins didn't have a sweeper's help for the second half once Keegan was sent off.

Cant wait for the replay be interesting to see what Fitzmaurice does, will he hold the big guns in reserve again. Will he start Donaghy or keep him for the last 15 minutes, personally I hope he keeps him for the last 15 as i feel Donaghy is now better as an impact sub. I felt alot of the analysis was a bit unfair to kerry. All about mayo and not a wor about Kerry scoring 1-2 in 4 minutes. Another talking point that wasnt discussed was how the Mayo back line fell asunder when kerr went direct. Surely a major concern for Horan next weekend.

Agree on Higgins. He never got touch tight on O'Donoghue yesterday. Expected more from him. AOS was excellent in second half but very poor in first. Dec O'S was quite poor and should have been taken back off.
Caffreky was never the full back he was made out to be. If Donaghy plays half an hour in there the next day I expect kerry to win

I mentioned this during the game yesterday, Keegan had to see the line. Mayo tried slow Cluxtons kick outs in the league by repeatedly kicking the ball off the kicking tee. McGloughlin kicked Cluxton in the hands as he placed the ball and Cluxton petulantly tripped McGloughlin with a little tap. Cluxton saw red for something so small. Many HS posters just said "rules are rules" and "he deserved to go" etc.

Ironic some of the same people are saying Keegan was harshly treated. He kicked a guy in front of the ref! He had to see the line.

Fancy Mayo in the replay.....Kerry fell apart and if Cafferkey had of stayed on Mayo probably would have seen it out.

Ps. Limerick to host is a shocking call.

Hungover as hell today and what a rollercoaster of emotion yesterday. Il be honest and say I though we were gone at ht, well and truly snookered. Kerry came out then and scored the first point of the second half but credit to our lads, they fought like warriors to claim a 10 point turn around. Kerry then showed us all that they never go away.

I would have brought on Barry Moran and told him to stick to Donnaghy for those last few mins. AOS, Cillian, Boyer, Vaughan, Moran all fantastic for us in the second half. The noise was insane, it felt like there was 80,000 there.

I really am mixed as I write this, would have taken a draw a half time but man we should have held out in the end. Very naive defending. The Jerry could have also wn it so maybe on the balance a draw was the fairest result.

My view on looking back at the game is Lee was stupid to lash out though just before that the Kerry man drove his fist towards Keegan and the ball so it was a split second reaction. Also though the Kerry man got off lightly brining down Vaughan through on goal.
